DIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the new Nikon D40x DSLR, which features a 10.2 megapixel sensor, producing 3,872 x 2,592-pixel images, 3D Colour Matrix Metering II system and 2.5 inch LCD screen, all in the most compact Nikon DSLR ever.
“With 10 million pixels resolution, the Nikon D40x is right at the top of the amateur segment. And with that, the only much heard criticism about the D40 has disappeared. It’s remarkable that Nikon managed to combine the increase in pixels with an increase in quality. The level of noise is at least just as good, but probably better even than with the D40. This is quite an accomplishment.”

Sony have released some official photos of their new DSLR prototypes that were first revealed back at PMA in March. The images reveal a little more detail than the rudimentary models that were being displayed under glass at the show. One of these new Sony DSLR models (as yet unconfirmed) is due to be launched this year.

“So the bottom line is whether those extra Megapixels are worth a difference which at the time of writing worked out to be around $200 USD or £100 GBP extra. If you loved everything about the D40 but wished it had 10 Megapixels, then the D40x is undoubtedly the answer. But it’s important to also consider the alternatives available at this higher price point.”

DigitalCameraInfo have just reviewed the new 6.1 megapixel Pentax K100D DSLR camera.
“The Pentax K100D is a good value. It’s easy to use, well-built, and inherits some particularly worthwhile features from cameras at the top of its line. The autofocus system lives up to its specs, and is excellent. It also offers Shake Reduction. Though 6-megapixel cameras are becoming rare in both the DSLR and compact camera markets, there is a place for them. The file size is plenty big for most prints and they take up much less space on hard drives than 10-MP files, making them less taxing on slow computers.”

Luminous Landscape have published their first impressions of the new Canon EOS-1D Mark III DSLR camera.
“Let’s cut to the chase. In my initial evaluation I judge the MKIII to have between a one stop and two stop advantage over any Canon camera to date in terms of high ISO noise. And at the risk of starting a barroom brawl, previous Canon cameras have been as good as if not arguable better than any other manufacturer’s DSLRs when it comes to low noise at high ISO. One can also quibble as to whether the Canon 5D has been the best yet (my opinion), but there will be no argument that with the MKIII Canon has now exceeded what has come before, and has set a new benchmark for low noise.”

CNET have reviewed the new Olympus E-410 DSLR camera.
“In general, the E-410 is capable of producing very good photos; in that respect, it differs little from competitors like the Nikon D40x and Canon EOS Rebel XTi. It takes a little more effort to get there, however—a bit of an absurdity given Olympus’ marketing it as a nonthreatening step up for the point-and-shoot photographer. If the Live View mode or compact design appeals to you, go to your local retailer and give the Evolt E-410 a try to make sure that their appeal lives up to your expectations. If not, you’ll get better value for your entry-level buck with almost any of the models on our list of top prosumer dSLRs.”

“Image quality from the D40x is extremely good. Colors look very accurate and are well saturated without being oversaturated. Images have a wide dynamic range, with plenty of detail in both shadows and highlights. We shot our lab test images with the 18mm-to-55mm kit lens, which produced admirably sharp images for an entry-level kit lens, though we did see a very minor amount of fringing with this lens around some extreme highlights.”

PopPhoto describe how to easily adapt the Sigma SD14 DSLR camera for infra-red photography.
“The reason the IR filter is so easy to remove on the SD14 is to allow the owner to clean their own sensor. This manufacturing choice is an awesome side effect that makes the SD14 one of the few, if not only, hot-swappable IR/visible spectrum SLRs available. Unlike with most other SLRs, which have the IR cutoff just in front of the chip, the IR cutoff filter of the SD14 sits in front of the reflex mirror, and it’s a simple process to pop it out.”

DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the FujiFilm S5 Pro digital SLR camera.
“The Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro is Fujifilm’s latest attempt at the perfect camera for wedding photographers. It has a new version of the company’s extended-range SR sensor, with new adjustments meant specifically to handle facial highlights and white clothing (wedding dresses). The S5’s strong dynamic range and pleasing color are its unique selling points. Really, they are the sum total of its unique propositions of any kind, given that the Fujifilm sensor and image process rig are dropped into an otherwise unchanged Nikon D200.”

The Online Photographer have reviewed the Leica M8 digital rangefinder camera, which has a 10 megapixel sensor, focal factor of 1.33x and an ISO range of 160-2500.
“To sum up from above, the M8 doesn’t quite make it for me as an M camera. It’s physically similar to the film versions but misses the gestalt, perhaps unavoidably. To me it ends up feeling more like a weird replica of an M than a real one. And it’s a decent but not great digital camera, bettered by average DSLRs in both operability and, to a lesser extent, image quality.”

TrustedReviews have reviewed the FujiFilm S5 Pro digital SLR camera.
“So does it work? Does the S5 Pro actually produce better colour and tonal range than an equivalent SLR with a conventional CCD? The short answer is yes, but at a price. I found that in exact comparison shots with the Nikon D40x which I still have, and with my own Sony A100, the S5 produced roughly two stops of extra dynamic range, with enhanced shadow detail and highlights.”

“Amazingly, the D40x does a bit better than the D80 in the noise department, apparently due to slightly more aggressive noise reduction, as the level of detail is slightly lower at ISO 1600 on the D40x than it is on the D80. But again, ISO 100 to 1600 produced very usable images.”

“Detail, thanks to that 10Mp resolution, tends to be quite good, though the kit lens with the D40x, the Nikkor 18-55mm is a little plastic feeling and lacks real sharpness. Certainly the results from the D40x will please anyone, from beginner to more experienced user as they are lively with plenty of impact.”

ePhotoZine have reviewed the FujiFilm S5 Pro digital SLR camera.
“The auto-focus is perhaps the weakest element of the S5, as it isn’t super-quick, but only wildlife photographers are going to find it a problem. A related features is the Live view on the LCD - this is something few DSLRs offer. Unfortunately, while it works in colour, it only operates with the camera in manual focus mode. And then it only stays on for 30secs while you are busy fiddling with the focus.”

Rob Galbraith have a preview of the new Canon EOS-1D Mark III DSLR camera.
“The camera’s features may be difficult to sum up, but the camera’s performance isn’t. It’s awesome. Pixel-for-pixel, the image quality is the best we’ve seen from a digital SLR, and except for one preproduction body glitch, it’s also the best SLR we’ve ever shot with too. The EOS-1D Mark III shows a level of design care and engineering thoroughness that is simply unprecedented. Its list of features is impressive. But actually using the camera reveals how impressive all these features work.”

PopPhoto have published their hands-on first impressions of the Sigma SD14 DSLR camera.
“This is a solidly built camera, on a par with cameras in the Canon EOS 30D class. Our roving camera tester Jack Howard commented, “the design is chunky, and satisfyingly large. This is an unabashed DSLR that won’t get confused for an oversized EVF camera. Hard edges have a classic feel that bucks the current trend toward graceful sweeping lines and curves.” In other words, a little tank.”
