A British Life in a Mountain Kingdom: Early Photographs of Sikkim and Bhutan is the first exhibition of photographs by 19th century British government officer John Claude White. A pioneer of mountain photography, White was given the chance to live amongst some of the world’s most formidable mountains in 1888 when he was assigned to the Sikkim-Tibet Boundary Commission, tasked with mapping and surveying the regions’ borders. The cumbersome photographic equipment with which he traveled—including a large format camera and glass plate negatives—is a testament to his dedication to photography. In hist time, White’s images offered the world rare glimpses into these isolated Himalayan lands, illustrating his articles on Tibet, Bhutan and Nepal for National Geographic Magazine. A British Life in a Mountain Kingdom: Early Photographs of Sikkim and Bhutan will be on view in the Rubin Museum of Art from 6 August 2010 to 10 January 2011. The museum is located at 150 West 17th Street, New York.

Hundreds of members of the public are invited to participate in two revolutionary photographic commissions to create public art installations using Olympic finish line technology in London and Birmingham. In association with Rhubarb-Rhubarb, image maker Ádám Magyar will create two large-scale outdoor installations, working with Newham Council and Birmingham Cultural Partnership. A minimum of 300 local people will be needed to create each image. The camera used to create the installations records a scene one pixel at a time to capture movement. Using the same technologies as those used on the Olympic Finish Line, UK-based Hungarian photographer Ádám Magyar has built his own software to transpose the thousands of slices per second, captured by the camera, “to create stunning images which embrace time and space in a most intriguing way”. The Newham Walk for the Camera will be staged on Saturday 17 July at the Mayor’s Newham Show in East Ham, while the Birmingham Walk for the Camera will take place as part of the city’s participation in the London 2012 Open Weekend. Black & Blue is the title of an exhibition of Gianni Galassi’s architectural “photo visions”. The exhibition title is inspired by the wide black colour-fields created by the shadows – the true subject of the showcased photographs – and by the cut-outs of sky, in a highly saturated blue, marking the compositional voids. Curated by Laura Ginapri, the exhibition will take place in the recently renovated La Piscina space, on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. It features 68 colour photographs in the 180x180 cm (70x70 inch), 120x120 cm (47x47 inch) and 60x60 cm (23x23 inch) sizes, along with 3 site specific installations. The exhibit will be on show from 26 August to 3 October 2010.
