The Imaging Science Group of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) is organising another Good Picture Symposium, open to all, on selected technical aspects of digital imaging. As 2010 is the 100th anniversary of infrared photography, the organisers have taken the opportunity to celebrate this by including some IR topics including “Infrared in the Surveillance Society”, “Digital Infrared Thermography in Medicine”, “How Infrared Sensing Might Help Us Manage the Resources of Planet Earth”, “Infrared Imaging – The Fever Screening Dilemma” and “Practical Options For Infrared Photography”. Other topics include the use of colour appearance models in imaging and a look at Canon raw conversion options. The Good Picture Symposium is taking place on 4 December at the University of Westminster, Regent Street, London. Admission costs £64.

Garage Studios are showing Kevin Mason’s Your Life Is My Vanity Project, from 29 to 31 May between 10:30 am and 8:00 pm. The project, which spanned thirty weeks of photoshoots over eight months, plots the important physical and emotional transformations as Kevin’s subject Georgie Hobday turns seventeen. Your Life Is My Vanity Project is presented by sponsors Garage Studios, Brighton’s biggest Photography Studio and Training Centre as a series of prints and original polaroids and features over 120 images curated by both Georgie Hobday and M.Halls, a limited edition book of the work will also be available at the exhibition and online at the website below.

The opening of the Still in Motion London Photography Festival will take place in Paris, at La Cartonnerie, on the 29th and 30th of May 2010 and one week later, at the Horse Hospital in London. The festival programme includes an exhibition of pinhole photographs, a pinhole photo contest on the theme of the changing city, free pinhole portraits in a Victorian lay-out, an exhibition of young photographers, and more. Throughout the weekend, a discovery workshop will be delivered for the public that will play upon the pinhole camera’s origins and the experience of taking a picture in a 19th century studio. “One of the targets of this event is to recreate the social link within the city through photography, and to bring urban people to rediscover their city,” the organisers say. An exhibition of young artists is also part of the programme - the photo above (taken by and reproduced with courtesy of Frank Loriou) is one of the works that are going to be displayed at this exhibition.

The Prix Pictet and Musée de l’Elysée will present the first exhibition of the two winners of the main award, Benoit Aquin and Nadav Kander, and the two commissioned artists, Munem Wasif and Ed Kashi. Aquin and Kashi will exhibit work made this year in Haiti and Madagascar respectively, while Kander and Wasif will show work made in China and Bangladesh. The exhibition at the Musée de l’Elysée’s - taking place from 18 June to 25 July - is part of the museum’s 25th Anniversary celebration.

Birmingham Museum of Art Gallery will host the first UK exhibition of legendary Magnum photographer Steve McCurry. The exhibition will include over eighty striking images that span a remarkable twenty-year career, including his world renowned portrait “Afghan Girl”, taken in 1984 with a Nikon FM2 camera and 105mm f/2.5 lens. The now iconic image of the young green-eyed girl appeared for the first time on the cover of National Geographic in June 1985, instantly becoming a symbol both of the Afghan conflict and of the refugee situation worldwide. To accompany the exhibition Steve McCurry will give a presentation about his twenty year career on Friday, 2 July. The talk will start at 6.30 pm in the Waterhall at Birmingham Museum of Art Gallery. From June 8 through October 17, 2010, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will present Hipsters, Hustlers, and Handball Players: Leon Levinstein’s New York Photographs, 1950-1980. A master of classic American street photography, Leon Levinstein (American, 1910–1988) is best known for his candid and unsentimental black-and-white figure studies made in New York City neighbourhoods from Times Square and the Lower East Side to Coney Island. Light & Land has announced a new tour to the Isle of Wight. The tour will be based at the Northcourt Lodge in Shorwell – which was built in 1615 and is the largest manor house on the island, located just 5 minutes from the dramatic coastline of the west Wight. On 14 June, high wire artist Philippe Petit will engage in a freewheeling conversation with photographer Tom Wool, whose images of Tibet’s Rongbuk Valley are the subject of a current exhibition at the Rubin Museum of Art. Wool’s Rubin Museum exhibition, In the Shadow of Everest, presents images of life in the villages of the valley. In 2001, accompanied by two yakmen and a tiny horse, Wool followed the route taken during the first British expeditions through this area, including that taken by George Mallory and Andrew Irvine as they attempted their ill-fated Everest climb in 1924. Petit and Wool will talk about everything from heights and altitude, to Tibet, to education, to the nature of creativity and motivation. The conversation will take place in the Rubin Museum of Art (150 West 17th Street, New York), at 7pm on Monday, 14 June. Tickets are available via the website below, priced at $15.

Still in Motion is a company that aims to promote contemporary photography both in Paris and London by way of organising a photography festival that will “build a bridge over the Channel”. The opening of the Still in Motion London Photography Festival will take place in Paris, at La Cartonnerie, on the 29th and 30th of May 2010 and one week later, at the Horse Hospital in London. The festival programme includes an exhibition of pinhole photographs, a pinhole photo contest on the theme of the changing city, free pinhole portraits in a Victorian lay-out, an exhibition of young photographers, and more. The Annenberg Space for Photography presents its next exhibit, Pictures of THE YEAR International (POYi), with images from one of the most prestigious photojournalism competitions in the world. With approximately 60 images, the print exhibit will cover 2009 with views of youth culture, soldiers’ stories, the continued economic crisis, environmental disasters, pop culture, and more. A separate digital exhibit will feature hundreds of additional winning images and will follow winning photojournalists ‘behind the lens’ in the field, such as- Barbara Davidson and Brian L. Frank. The exhibit will kick off June 24-25, 2010 with the POYi Education & Awards programme, a two-day event that includes presentations by the exhibited award-winning photojournalists. This year, DCP Systems will be supporting the Manchester and Coventry events of the Photovision Roadshows. Now in their sixth year, the Photovision Roadshows aim to promote innovation and excellence in the photographic industry. The Manchester event will be held on 11 May, whereas the Coventry event takes place on 15 June. Both start at 11 a.m., but there will be free seminars for photographers starting at 10 a.m. DCP will be bringing with them a range of large-format printers for the photographic arena – including the Epson Stylus Pro 3880/4880 and the Epson Stylus Pro 7800/7900.

Renowned photographer Denis O’Regan will be giving a rare presentation on shooting the legendary band KISS ahead of their upcoming Wembley shows. The lecture will take place on Tuesday, 11 May in the Apple Store (235 Regent Street, London, W1B 2EL). The new ‘On the Edge - Extreme Landscapes’ photography course from Photo Iconic takes participants off dry land and out to sea in a high-speed rigid inflatable boat. The adventure starts at the port of Felixstowe in Suffolk and travels out to the off-shore gas rigs in the North Sea. The course also takes in the Suffolk Heritage Coast, the beautiful landscape of Orford Ness with its impressive lighthouse and deserted Ministry of Defence building, the prehistoric Benacre Lake, the seaside towns of Southwold and Lowestoft and the huge and impressive windfarm near Great Yarmouth, presenting the opportunity to photograph the giant turbines from close up. Limited to just five participants, the course costs £520 for two days - 3-4 July - including personal insurance and dinner, but excluding accommodation.
