Polaroid: The Missing Manual - The Complete Creative Guide by Rhiannon Adam is a new title from Thames & Hudson. This highly accessible and intuitive book offers a complete overview of the tools and methods of instant photography. The first part of the book covers the technology of instant photography - including a chronological history of each camera/film format, user manuals, and buying guides. The second section, “Creative Techniques”, contains twenty-eight creative guides, introducing ways to take your instant photography further. These cover almost every method of instant image manipulation. The final part of the book features an extensive resources directory, containing an exhaustive index of every contemporary and historical instant film type, a store and suppliers guide, artists index, and large further reading section. The 240-page hardcover will be available from October, priced at £19.95.

Panasonic today announced a major firmware update for their GH5 compact system camera. The new firmware enables GH5 tethered shooting via USB, using the “LUMIX Tether” PC software. Users can control the camera by connecting it to a PC via a USB. It lets you view the image on a large PC screen while shooting, which is helpful in commercial photoshoots of portraits, products, etc where continuous confirmation is required. The firmware also improves AF performance, faster shooting in 4K Photo and 6K Photo modes, an additional ALL-Intra-I Video Recording mode, 4K HDR video recording, various enhancements to the Anamorphic video recording mode and the in-body image stabiliser, and much more. The firmware upgrade will be available from the end of next month.

 Lomography are launching a Kickstarter campaign for their new Lomo'Instant Square camera. Billed as the very first analogue instant camera to produce Instax square pictures, the Lomo'Instant Square features a 95mm glass lens for super sharp photos and an advanced automatic mode that takes care of everything from shutter speed to flash output — and a smart zone-focusing system that makes focusing easy. It also has a remote control shutter release for group shots and creative shooting. The Lomo'Instant Square features a compact foldable design, constructed with bellows, as a tribute to classic models that defined the golden era of instant photography. It comes in five colourways: a sleek black edition, a crisp white edition, an elegant brown leather edition, a stylish red leather edition, and a colourful eye-catching edition exclusive to Kickstarter backers. It will retail at prices starting from $199, but Kickstarter backers will save up to 35% on the planned retail price.

Canon Japan have released 7 high-resolution sample images captured with their new EOS M100 compact system camera. Taken with a variety of lenses including the Canon EF-M15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM, EF-M18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM, EF-M28mm f/3.5 MACRO IS STM, EF-M11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM and EF-M55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM; these Canon EOS M100 samples were shot at sensitivity settings ranging from ISO 100/21° to ISO 400/27°.

The Canon Macro Twin Lite MT-26EX-RT is a powerful, high-performance specialist flash for professional photography. The MT-26EX-RT features Macro Twin Lights with moveable flash tubes, which can be positioned at five degree intervals around the lens. They can be rotated upwards or downwards, plus pivoted inwards or outwards, depending on the lighting requirements of the shot.

Version 2.6.9 of the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) has just been released. This update brings various performance, usability and configurability improvements, better Hi-DPI support, a host of new blending modes, a new Handle Transform tool, a faster Warp Transform tool, an enhanced Free Selection tool, a preloaded Raw Therapee plug-in, and much more. Do note that this is officially an "unstable developer version." For the time being, GIMP 2.8.22 remains the latest stable release.
