Don't try this at home! Lens Rentals have taken the rather unusual decision to pull apart their brand new Canon EOS R camera, bolt by bolt, component by component, just to have a peak at what's inside. Fortunately for us, they've shared the step-by-step results.

Perhaps the most important takeaway from this rather painful process is that Roger Cicala, founder of Lensrentals.com, doesn't think that IBIS will ever make its way into a Canon EOS R body:

"Do I think future Rs are going to have IBIS? No, I don’t. Canon has been very clear that they think lens stabilization is superior. The space is probably just a matter of ergonomics and perhaps heat diffusion. But there’s certainly room for it."

Roger also comments on the EOS R's weather-sealing:

"Speaking of the Sony A7RIII, it’s taken a bit of internet trashing for its lack of weather sealing. Throw no stones from your glass house, oh Canon shooters. The Canon EOS-R is just about the same; well-sealed buttons and dials, not much else. That means, I think, that it will be fine in a misty rain for a while, but don’t get it saturated and don’t set it somewhere wet."

Fascinating stuff and well worth a read.

The new TinyMOS NANO1 is the world’s smallest astrophotography camera.

Successor to the TINY1 camera, which was launched in 2015, the NANO1 is a third of the size and weight of its predecessor (less than 100g), yet it will be three more times powerful than the TINY1. This is thanks to a new 12 megapixel back-illuminated sensor that can also shoot 4K video.

In terms of lenses, the NANO1 features a dual mount system allowing the use of very small M12 mount lenses and larger more capable optics in the C mount format.

The TinyMOS NANO1 will be launched in Autumn/Fall 2018.

As if the new Zeiss ZX1 and the Zenit M weren't surprising enough, there's another intriguing new camera in town in the shape of the rather oddly named PIXII.

This appears to be a French initiative that's just soft-launched with an on-trend teaser-based website. Unfortunately, in this current age where seemingly every new photographic product is leaked, yes, you've guessed it, the full details of the PIXII have already been leaked, including their entire financial business plan, courtesy of Leicarumors.

Aimed at smartphone photographers looking for a more affordable camera to upgrade to, the styling of the new PIXII is certainly refreshing, coming across like a miniature rangefinder on steroids that uses Leica lenses, hence the rumour site coverage.

It remains to be seen if this two-man team can actually bring the PIXII to market after being in development for the last 3 years, but the launch of their new website certainly seems to suggest that they're getting closer to their goal. Bonne chance!

Update: PIXII have now released a press releases and official product shots of their new rangefinder camera (pictured above).

The upcoming Viltrox 0.71x Speed Booster for Canon EOS M promises to turn it into a full-frame mirrorless camera (kind-of).

Due for release in the next couple of months, the Viltrox 0.71x Speed Booster will apply a 0.71x crop to lenses mounted on the EOS M and also increase the exposure by +1 stop, turning a 50mm f/2.8 lens into a 35mm f/2 lens.

This should help to overcome the Canon EOS M50's severe crop when shooting 4K video, for example, as well as increase the effective resolution, that's if the autofocus and image quality aren't too adversely affected by mounting the Viltrox 0.71x Speed Booster adapter.

Kinotika have a great video from Photokina showing the Viltrox 0.71x Speed Booster in action, and they're also reporting that it will only cost a mere $156...

At this year’s Adobe MAX event, some incredible Sneaks were showcased by Adobe engineers, alongside comedian, actress and writer Tiffany Haddish and Paul Trani, Adobe’s Senior Creative Cloud Evangelist.

The latest innovations that were showcased include:

#MovingStills: Have you ever had a photo that you wished was a video instead? Moving Stills enables any photograph to be turned into a live photo; animating the image in 3D and simulating the realistic effect of flying through the photo. Moving Stills uses deep learning powered by Adobe Sensei to generate videos from a single still image, something that would otherwise take an experienced artist hours to finish.

#ProjectFastMask: Project Fast Mask uses Adobe Sensei to quickly select an object in a video and accurately apply the mask across multiple frames of the video, making a laborious manual process nearly automatic.

#ProjectSmoothOperator: For all you video content creators out there, we’re all too familiar with the painstaking process of re-cropping video in varying aspect ratios and trying to keep the most important pieces of the video intact. Enter: Project Smooth Operator. Smooth Operator uses Adobe Sensei to automatically re-crop a video to multiple new aspect ratios, all while keeping what is interesting or important inside the frame.
