The new Epson Stylus SX115 is a compact printer, scanner and copier with individual inks. Epson has announced the Stylus Photo P50, a new, compact A4 photo printer designed for home printing. The Epson Stylus Photo P50 uses Epson’s Micro Piezo print head technology which, combined with Epson Claria Photographic Ink, produces detailed and sharp images that allegedly last up to 98 years in a frame or over 200 years in an album. The new printer uses individual ink cartridges so you only need to replace the one that has gone empty. The RRP is £89.99 including VAT, availability is slated for July. The package contains an Epson Photo Paper Pack, so you can start printing photos immediately after installation.

Epson have teamed up with EFI to create what both companies expect will be the most advanced and complete proofing solution on the market to date. The new Epson Stylus Pro 900 Series Proofing Editions combine the unique proofing advantages that come with the Epson Stylus Pro 7900 or 9900 wide format ink jet printers, along with EFI’s RIP workflow, EFI Colorproof XF v4.0 for Epson. The end result is “a unique and complete solution designed to redefine what’s possible for virtually all contract-proofing applications”. The Epson Proofing Edition Series includes an Epson Stylus Pro 7900 (24-inch) or 9900 (44-inch) wide format ink jet printer, a complete set of Epson UltraChrome® HDR ink cartridges, and a full 24-inch roll of Epson Standard Proofing Paper 240. Furthermore, it comes with EFI Colorproof XF 4.0 for Epson (software-based RIP) with pre-installed profiles for Epson’s entire line of Professional Proofing Papers. According to Kodak, Brits spent a staggering £600million on printer ink in 2008. The American giant has recently launched a campaign “against rip-off ink prices”, claiming that on average a consumer would save £75 a year by switching to an all-in-one printer with allegedly high quality, low cost ink. The Sony DPP-FP97 and DPP-FP67 are two new compact photo printers. Both models produce 4 x 6-inch photo prints - the DPP-FP97 in about 45 seconds, and the DPP-FP67 in about 63 seconds. The Sony DPP-FP97 comes with frame, scrapbooking and calendar templates, an auto touch-up feature, 3.5-inch LCD screen, HDMI-out port, plus a software keyboard for quick type messages and personalized greeting cards. In May, the DPP-FP97 digital photo printer will be available for about $200, and the DPP-FP67 model for about $120.

Canon have unveiled five new printing and scanning products, including the Pro9500 and Pro9000 Mark II professional A3+ printers. The Canon Pro9500 Mark II is a 10-colour A3+ photo printer with 3 monochrome inks, built-in Ambient Light Adjustment and DVD/CD direct print. The Canon Pro9000 Mark II offers sinilar features but uses an 8-colour ink system with additional red and green inks for enhanced color reproduction. The Canon MP868 and MX328 are new all-in-one photo printers, and the LiDE 700F Film Scanner offers 9,600 x 9,600dpi optical resolution for high quality film scanning. All five products were originally announced by Canon Hong Kong.

In the US, the Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II will be available in May for $499.99, the Canon PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II for $849.99, and the LiDE700F scanner in April for $129.99. In the UK and Europe, the Pro9000 Mark II will be available from June 2009 priced at £499.00 / €559.00 RRP inc. VAT., and the Pro9500 Mark II is available from June 2009 priced at £729.00 / €819.00 RRP inc. VAT.

The Dell Wasabi PZ310 is a new portable printer that creates 2x3 inch borderless color images in less than a minute. Based on ZINK Imaging’s ink-free printing technology (also used in the Polaroid Digital Instant Mobile Photo Printer), the Dell Wasabi measures just 4.8 in. x 2.8 in. x 0.9 in. and weighs 7 ounces. Available in three colours - pink, black and blue - the Dell PZ310 is launching with a promotional price of $99 for a limited time (normally $149).

The Canon PIXMA MX860 and PIXMA MX330 are two new office printers with photo capabilities. The Canon MX860 and MX330 are both equipped with the ChromaLife100+ ink system, which provides more vibrant and longer-lasting photos. “These two new Office AIO printers provide the consumer with the comfort of knowing all of their business and personal printing needs can be done from their home.” said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. The PIXMA MX860 and PIXMA MX330 will cost $199.99 and $109.99 respectively

Fujicolor Crystal Archive paper was rated top in a silver halide print longevity test by Wilhelm Imaging Research. It had the highest Display Permanence Rating amongst silver halide colour prints made with digital minilabs’ lasting 40 years under glass. In comparison, the equivalent Kodak paper managed just 19 years, and the worst performer in the test managed just 4 months. Food for thought when you next have your photos printed at a minilab…

The Canon iPF6200 is a new 24-inch wide, 12-colour large format printer. The iPF6200 utilizes Canon’s LUCIA color pigment ink, offering an extremely large color gamut and optimized for printing digital photographic imagery. The iPF6200 includes a professional-grade software RIP and an 80GB internal hard drive. “Building upon the foundation set by our award-winning iPF6100, the new imagePROGRAF iPF6200 will offer photographic and graphic arts printing professionals an affordable printing solution without compromising quality or speed,” said Jim Rosetta, vice president and general manager, Imaging Systems Group, Canon U.S.A. The Canon iPF6200 printer is available immediately for $3,495.

Epson America has introduced the 24-inch Epson Stylus Pro 7900 and the 44-inch Epson Stylus Pro 9900. Almost twice as fast as previous models, the 7900 and 9900 feature Epson’s MicroPiezo TFP print head and new Epson UltraChrome HDR Ink technology with all-new Orange and Green inks. Also new to the Epson Stylus Pro series is an optional high performance, in-line spectrophotometer for commercial proofing applications. The Epson Stylus Pro 7900 and 9900 will be available in November 2008 for $3,995 and $5,995 respectively.

Epson has extended its Collect&Recycle initiative to include postal return of inkjet printer cartridges. This programme aims to provide home users and small businesses with an easy, free solution to return their empty inkjet cartridges for recycling.  The Epson Collect&Recycle initiative has been running in Europe since February 2006, until now focusing on laser printer cartridges. 100% of the cartridges collected through the scheme are recycled: their plastic components are re-used in manufacturing and construction as raw materials, while metal parts are smelted and re-used in other industrial applications.

Kodak has introduced two new all-in-one printers, the ESP 9 and ESP 7. Featuring an intelligent paper tray system which automatically adjusts settings based on paper type, size and amount, the Kodak ESP 9 and Kodak ESP 7 also offer Wi-Fi printing and a 10” one-touch control panel on the ESP 9. Both models promise to save consumers up to £75 a year on ink, compared to other leading consumer inkjet printers. The Kodak ESP 7 and ESP 9 AiO printers will cost £199.99 and £299.99 respectively, available from November.

The HP Designjet Z3200 expands HP’s professional printing portfolio for photographers. The Z3200 features new HP 73 Chromatic Red ink, which enables up to 95 percent Pantone coverage. Using the HP Quad-Black Ink set. the HP Z3200 produces high-quality prints with smooth transitions and true neutral grays. New to the Z series family, the HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer offers an enhanced HP Color Center tool that enables users to easily perform calibration and profiling tasks. Users can easily generate custom ICC profiles in-house under specific environmental conditions and create paper presets for easy sharing and importing to other HP Designjet Z3200 Photo printers. The HP Designjet Z3200 24-inch model will cost $3,395 and $5,595 for the 44-inch model. Both models are expected to be available in October 2008.

The HP Photosmart B8550 is a complete home printing solution producing large-format prints while still maintaining the versatility of an everyday home printer. The 5-ink B8550 can print in a wide range of sizes from 4 x 6-inches to 13 x 19-inches, producing laser-quality pigment ink black text and lab-quality photos. The HP Photosmart B8550 Photo Printer’s long-lasting, dual-drop-volume print head is comprised of 55 percent recycled plastic. The HP Photosmart B8550 costs $299.99 and is available now.

“The Stylus Photo R2880 is a bit of a conundrum. The steps forward Epson has made in print quality and reducing clogs are hamstrung by the continued necessity to swap black inks. If Epson had eliminated the cartridge-swapping issue with this printer, it would be a nearly perfect product; as it is, it’s a remarkable printer with one significant drawback.”

Epson have introduced three new sub-$100 ink jet all-in-ones, the NX300, NX200 and NX100. Joining the flagship Epson Stylus NX400 model, the three newcomers are priced from $69.99 to $89.99. The 4-in-1 Epson Stylus NX300 is Epson’s first ever sub-$100 all-in-one with fax and an Auto Document Feeder (ADF). The Epson NX100 prints up to 26 ppm for black text documents, while the Epson NX200 produces even faster black and color documents at up to 32 ppm. In addition, the Epson NX200 adds card slots and PictBridge compatibility for PC-Free photo printing.

The Epson Stylus Photo PX800FW is a new all-in-one printer, scanner and fax machine designed for your living room.
