DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7, a new addition to Sony’s range of ultra-zoom compact digital cameras offering 8 megapixels, 15x optical stabilized zoom lenses, ISO 3200, face-detection and HDTV output.

“The 8.1-megapixel Cyber-shot H7 has a lot of great features: a 15x optical zoom lens with image stabilization, an impressive 2.2 fps burst mode that snaps up to 100 shots, high definition output for musical slide shows and videos, and even trendy face recognition technology that works quickly and effectively. The H7 is also a strong performer, displaying excellent color accuracy, low noise levels, and a lot of detail in captured images.”

OptiML WLC from Tessera Technologies is a new wafer-level camera technology which reduces the size and cost of camera modules. OptiML WLC delivers up to 50% size reductions over conventional camera modules in camera phones today. Using OptiML WLC technology, thousands of lenses are manufactured simultaneously on a wafer, and then bonded at the wafer level to create the optical element of the camera.

It seems that Wi-Fi memory cards are on the way, as wireless technology company Eye-Fi secures $5.5 million in Series A funding. “Digital cameras have made it very easy to take pictures, but it’s a chore to get photos off the camera to a place where you can print or share them,” commented Robert Coneybeer, managing director for Shasta Ventures “This is a very real problem affecting both consumers who own digital cameras, and companies in the digital photography industry looking to boost profits. We see a huge market opportunity for Eye-Fi because anyone with a Wi-Fi network and a digital camera is a potential customer.”

The 15 Inch eMotion Digital Picture Frame provides a 1024 x 768 pixel, 4:3 aspect ratio LCD screen for viewing photos, video and playing music. The Casio EX-V7 is a slim 7 megapixel digital camera with a 7x zoom lens equivalent to 38-266mm. Casio proudly boast that the EX-V7 is “the world’s slimmest digital camera with a 7x optical zoom lens”, a claim that Ricoh’s R6 camera may contest. The first model in the new Hi-Zoom category (so expect further releases soon), the Casio EX-V7 also features a 2.5 inch LCD, dual image stabilizer, MPEG-4 H.264 movies and no less than 33 different scene modes. ePhotoZine have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix P5000 camera, which offers 10 megapixels, 3.5x zoom lens (36-126mm), Vibration Reduction to combat camera shake, ISO 3200 capability and a 2.5 inch LCD screen.

“One of the headline features of the P5000 is that it sports an ISO range up to 3200, but this come with a couple of provisos. The first is that the resolution drops to 5Mp instead of 10Mp. Now, you could wail and curse at this, but considering 10Mp is largely overkill for many purposes, a 5Mp image is okay. Not great, but okay, to get that ISO3200. However, the other point is that some major processing kicks in for ISO3200, completely changing the image and losing most of the detail.”

“Nikon really shows off its style with its Coolpix S500, a sleek, compact camera that feels every bit as good as it looks. This little shooter has some of the nicest design points we’ve seen in a small shooter, plus a few handy features normally seen on higher-end cameras. DPReview have reviewed the Canon TX1 digital camera, which features a 10x optical zoom lens (39mm-390mm) with Optical Image Stabilization, 115,000-pixel Vari-Angle LCD screen and 7.1 megapixel sensor.

“Where the TX1 beats all camcorders is the quality of its stills, which we were genuinely surprised to see where for the most part sharp, detailed and every bit as good as most other 7MP ultra-compacts, with the added bonus of a big 10x zoom.”

“In use, the P5000 proved far less frustrating than the typical compact. It’s nice in the hand, and the shutter button is well positioned. While the AF sometimes take a moment to hunt, once it locks on, the camera fires with no delay. You can move the focusing point to a nutty 99 different positions, and couple the spotmeter to any one of them.”

CNET have reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix F40fd camera, which offers 8.3 megapixels, 3x zoom lens, 300 shot battery life, Face Detection technology and support for both xD-Picture Card and SD card formats.

“The Fujifilm FinePix F40fd is a nice, but not exceptional, point-and-shoot camera. Most casual snapshooters will likely be pleased with the images they get from this model. If you’re willing to spend a little more, Canon’s PowerShot SD800 IS will get you optical image stabilization and an optical viewfinder.”

The previously announced BenQ X725 and T700 digital cameras have just been released in the UK. The X725 digital camera is the world’s slimmest 7-megapixel camera, measuring just 12.5mm in width. The BenQ T700 costs £175 inc VAT, and the BenQ X725 £165 inc VAT. BenQ recently announced that they had sold their digital camera division.

The Carl Zeiss lens lives up to its prestigious name, providing superb detail with minimal wide-angle distortion, and some of the best edge and corner sharpness I’ve seen from a compact camera. The overall level of detail is very good, nearly as good in fact as the Fuji F40fd that I reviewed earlier this week.”

Megapixel.net have reviewed the Pentax W30, a waterproof digital camera offering 7.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom and two new Shake Reduction modes.

“Although we find the image compression at the highest image quality to be a bit too strong for our liking, the images the W30 produces are on par with many of today’s compact cameras, and make very good prints. So, since this camera has the advantage over others of being waterproof, it should ensure that it gets to accompany a lot of people on their summer and winter vacations.”

CNET have reviewed the new Canon SD850 IS (also known as the IXUS 950 IS), an 8 megapixel digital camera with 4x zoom, image stabilized lens equivalent to 35-140mm.

“There’s very little to complain about on the SD850 IS. Fans of ultracompacts, such as Sony’s T-series, might complain that this Canon isn’t small enough, but given its excellent image quality and speedy performance, I’m not complaining. Also, unlike those Sony cameras, this one includes an optical viewfinder, for situations, such as concerts, in which an LCD might annoy those around you. Bargain hunters will likely balk at this camera’s price, but again, its features and performance make it worth the premium over a bargain-basement camera.”
