DIWA member Digit.no have just reviewed the new Canon PowerShot A630 digital camera.
“Canon PowerShot A630 is one of the best equipped compact cameras in its class, featuring a bright 4x zoom lens (35-140 mm f/2.8-4.1), a flexible 2.5” LCD screen, 8 MP resolution and a wide variety of settings options, such as fully automatic, semi automatic and manual exposure and adjustable paramaters for image processing. It also has an intelligent 9-points AF as well as manual focus with enlarged centre. The A630 delivers high image quality, but I miss RAW format since JPEG compression is quite high, even for Superfine quality. I also miss bracketing options, although its evaluating metering and white balance is very precise under all most lighting conditions. The A630 has a rather bulky design, but that’s more an advantage than a drawback in my opinion as it makes the camera exceptionally user friendly.”

In the unlikely event that GARY would not know the answer to your question, he will answer it anyway, true to the spirit of the word “Parries”, a fencing term which, in this context, implies “cleverly evasive answers”. So let your imagination run wild. Email all your nagging digital camera questions to: [email protected] , and then, En Garde!
You may also attach to your email an ORIGINAL PHOTO of your choosing. A preview of the photo will be displayed with your question, and a full-sized version will be just a click away. No personal information will be published with your question unless you specifically include it in the text or attached photo of your email, which may be further edited for grammar, content, or other reasons.

DigiCamReview have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“Image quality is excellent, the images have very good colour, with good contrast and detail, with low noise except at the highest ISO settings (ISO1600). Images were slightly smoothed but this is adjustable within the camera and detail was very good. Purple fringing was very low with the kit lens, and red-eye was not a problem. The camera was very competent at focusing (except on very plain surfaces). Vignetting in photos was very mild and I did not notice barrel or pincushion distortion. There is a good range of image sizes, and the compression options include a RAW mode. Auto white balance, metering, and exposure seemed to be good to very good. The camera gives very good control over image quality - pressing the menu button lets you change “film” properties and this can be customised.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the Olympus PT-E02 underwater case in the exotic location of the Maldives.
“Ruud, our travel leader says that we can’t expect any whale sharks before ten o’clock. It is now half past eight, so I’ve still got time to do some reading like the others. I noticed that there was a tense atmosphere on board. Everyone is wondering what is going to happen. I’m too restless to read so go to the lookout. Who knows, maybe I’ll see a whale shark that the others will miss.”

Megapixel.net have reviewed the new Fujifilm S9600 (called the FinePix S9100 in the USA), which is a 9 megapixel camera with a 10x zoom lens.
“In our opinion, presenting the FinePix S9100/S9600 as a serious revision of the S9000/S9500 is a bit of a stretch. And, while the S9000/S9500 was indeed a ground breaking camera when it was introduced in mid 2005, this is now 2007 and a lot of developments have taken place since. So, although based on an SLR design that makes it comfortable to use, the S9100/S9600 does not have either the flexibility, nor the image quality that dSLR cameras offer; and with a street price that is close to some entry-level dSLR cameras, the S9100/S9600 may be faced with some tough competition.”

Steves Digicams have published their review of the new Nikon D40 entry level DSLR camera.
“The model utilizes a 6.1-megapixel Nikon DX format image sensor that records photos with a good amount of sharpness, accurate exposure, and rich color saturation. The D40 features a 3-area TTL AF system, it was fast and accurate, as you can see by our shooting performance numbers above. I was very impressed with the lack of image noise in our test shots, even ISO 1600 looks relatively good in my opinion.”

TrustedReviews have reviewed the Canon PowerShot S3 IS, a 6 megapixel camera with an image stabilized 12x zoom lens, ISO 800 and a 2 inch LCD screen.
“Image quality is also superb. Despite only having a tiny 1/2.5in sensor, pictures are impressively sharp and detailed, far more than I would expect from a 6MP camera. In fact I’ve seen 8MP models that can’t match the S3 for fine detail, and this is undoubtedly due to the excellent lens. It is pin-sharp from edge to edge at all focal lengths, produces minimal wide-angle barrel distortion, and its fast maximum aperture ensures good shutter speeds at long focal lengths. Combined with the fast AF it provides pin-sharp shots even of distant moving subjects.”
