Thom Hogan has just reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Nikon D200 digital SLR camera.
“The D200 is a completely new body design that seems almost a perfect hybrid of the D50/D70 and D2 series. It has the size, pop-up flash, and battery heritage from the D100/D70/D50 progression, but the feature set, button layout, and menus of the D2 series. The D200 body construction is more like that of a D2, including metal framing and gaskets for weather protection, but in your hands it feels much more like the lower-end cameras due to the smaller size and some external construction cues. The one new thing not shared with other current Nikon camera body is the autofocus system, which we’ll get to in detail in a bit. Compared to the D100 it replaced, the D200 has gone way upscale. The D200 is better built, better specified, has many more features, and is much more “pro-like” than “consumer.”“

Thom Hogan has cast his critical eye over the new Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED lens.
“One of the surprises with the D200 announcement was that it could be purchased with a new DX wide angle to telephoto zoom lens. Having a kit lens for consumer camera isn’t new for Nikon, but this was a doozy: 18-200mm focal lengths plus vibration reduction and AF-S speed. This looked like the do-all, be-all lens for virtually everything except extreme wide angle, extreme telephoto, extreme macro, and extreme low light. In other words, a lens you would use most of the time.”

Phlash (TM) Lifts Cameraphone Photography Out of the Dark Ages; Phlash Attaches to Any Cameraphone, Providing Powerful Lighting to Enable Quality Picture Taking Indoors and at Night
VENICE, Calif.—March 20, 2006—Foxden Holdings, LLC today introduced Phlash(TM), the world’s first universal cameraphone flash designed to provide powerful, even lighting for superior mobile phone photography. “There are 100 million cameraphones being used today, but less than 1 percent include a built-in flash. And unfortunately, even those built-in flashes are very weak because they are often added by manufacturers as an afterthought,” said Dale Fox, director, Foxden Holdings and the inventor of Phlash. “That’s ironic, considering most consumers use cameraphones to take quick, candid photos indoors—at restaurants, clubs, or other places with insufficient lighting. To solve this problem, we developed Phlash. Phlash is 12 times brighter than most built-in flashes, and allows anyone who already owns a cameraphone to finally take quality pictures indoors and at night.”

DPReview have reviewed the 7.5 megapixel, live preview Olympus E-330 DSLR camera.
“The introduction of the E-330 confused us, it was difficult to see where this new camera fitted into the current digital SLR market. It’s more expensive than the more traditional (but in my opinion better) E-500 yet offers very little more other than live view. Olympus has tried to address one complaint we (and others) had about the E-300, and that’s the design and styling. To me at least it’s only a partial achievement, the E-330 does look and handle better than the E-300 but honestly it’s still not as nice a camera to use as the E-500.”

This week’s Gary’s Parries topics are:
1. Photo Opportunity
2. Extra Megapixel
3. High ISO Anxiety
4. Bridge Camera Records Digital Images To Film
Introducing this week’s Gary’s Parries column. Everything you always wanted to know about digital cameras, but were afraid to ask. No question too difficult, or too easy. As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, and a former Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems, as well as a recording studio owner/operator, and now, a digital camera enthusiast, GARY has more digital camera knowledge in his entire brain than most people have in their little finger. In the unlikely event that GARY would not know the answer to your question, he will answer it anyway, true to the spirit of the word “Parries”, a fencing term which, in this context, implies “cleverly evasive answers”. So let your imagination run wild. Email all your nagging digital camera questions to: [email protected], and then, En Garde!
You may also attach an ORIGINAL PHOTO (150 x 150 pixels) to your email for display with your question. No personal information will be published with your question unless you specifically include it in the text or attached photo of your email. Emails selected for publication may also be edited for grammar, content, or other reasons.

DigitalCameraReview have the first review of the new Olympus Stylus 710 (also known as the mju 700 in Europe), a 7.1 megapixel camera with 3x zoom, 2.5 inch LCD and a weatherproof body.
“The Stylus 710 is actually pretty tiny, regardless of how it looks in pictures. It’s easily pocketable and I have no worries about damaging the camera while it rides in a shirt or pants pocket. The metal body has 24K gold plating covered with a platinum alloy that resists scratches. It’s a very sturdy camera, as is expected from a Stylus camera. I found the camera hard to hold—it just never felt “at rest” in my hand. I think the biggest contributor to my discomfort was that it always felt like it would just slip out of my hand. There was no grip or physical feature of the camera that solidified my grip. This may not be an issue for everyone so, as always, try it out before you buy.”
