Apple today unveiled their iPhone X smartphone, featuring an 5.8" edge-to-edge Super Retina OLED display with a resolution of 1125x2436 pixels. The dustproof and water resistant device makes do without a Home button, and uses Face ID technology to recognise the user, unlock the phone, gain access to secure apps and authenticate purchases via Apple Pay. Face ID utilises a state-of-the-art TrueDepth camera system made up of a dot projector, infrared camera and flood illuminator, and is powered by an A11 Bionic chip to accurately map and recognise a face. The new 7-megapixel TrueDepth camera that enables Face ID features wide colour capture, auto image stabilisation and precise exposure control, and brings Portrait mode to the front camera for enhanced selfies with a simulated shallow depth-of-field effect. The iPhone X also features a redesigned dual 12-megapixel rear camera system with dual optical image stabilisation. The ƒ/1.8 aperture on the wide-angle camera joins an improved ƒ/2.4 aperture on the telephoto camera for superior low-light performance. An improved Apple-designed image signal processor delivers advanced pixel processing, wide colour capture, faster autofocus in low light and better HDR photos. A new quad-LED True Tone Flash offers better light uniformity and includes Slow Sync, resulting in more uniformly lit backgrounds and foregrounds. Portrait mode with Portrait Lighting on both the front and rear cameras brings "dramatic studio lighting effects" to the iPhone and allows customers to capture portraits with a shallow depth-of-field effect in five different lighting styles. The Apple iPhone X will be available in silver and space grey in 64GB and 256GB models starting at $999.

The iPhone 8 Plus features dual 12-megapixel cameras and introduces Portrait mode with Portrait Lighting, bringing "dramatic studio lighting effects" to the iPhone, allowing customers to capture portraits with a simulated shallow depth-of-field effect in five different lighting styles. It uses the dual cameras and the Apple-designed image signal processor to recognise the scene, create a depth map and separate the subject from the background. Machine learning is then used to create facial landmarks and add lighting over contours of the face, all happening in real time. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus will be available in space gray, silver and an all-new gold finish in increased 64GB and 256GB capacity models starting at $699.
