The Digital Picture have reviewed the new Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens, which is equivalent in focal length to the popular EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM when used on the EOS 20D, EOS 300D and the new EOS 350D digtal SLR cameras.
“Back to the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens - it would not be my first choice for a macro lens (aside from product photography), but it makes a very good 60mm fixed focal length general use lens on an EF-S compatible Digital SLR Body. Since these bodies have a 1.6x FOVCF, the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens will frame subjects similar to a 96mm lens on a full frame body. Having macro capability in the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens is definitely a nice feature. If you are using a backdrop for a subject that does not run away, the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens will do a great job. Product photography is one such use. “

Lyra Research Press Release
A new Lyra survey examines the photo-printing behavior of U.S.-based digital photographers. Lyra’s Digital Photography Advisory Service is an online competitive research service for marketing and product managers in the digital camera, photo-quality printer, and online photo-service industry.
Newtonville, MA (PRWEB) April 20, 2005—According to Lyra Research’s 2004 U.S. Digital Photography Survey, more than 20 percent of women surveyed use a Kodak digital camera, while only 10 percent of men made Kodak their brand of choice. Men appear to prefer Canon digital cameras, with almost 17 percent of male respondents using that brand.
“The explanation is that women in general are less comfortable with technology and therefore are more attracted to trusted brands,” says Charles LeCompte, president of Lyra and director of Lyra’s Digital Photography Advisory Service. “ And the biggest brand in photography is, of course, Kodak.”

New Photobird.com codebase: More robust platform, flexible architecture, stronger foundation, at least 200% speed increase
For the past several months, we’ve been hard at work on a new version of Photobird.com. This new version has the same clean, attractive design as the previous Photobird.com site, but it also has improved speed, a more flexible architecture, and a stronger foundation upon which to build new features.
Our speed benchmark tests show a performance improvement of at least 200%. Some pages on the new Photobird.com show an improvement of over 2000%! Because Photobird.com is already very fast and because these improvements are measured in milliseconds, individual site visitors may not see a dramatic speed increase. But these performance improvements mean that as Photobird.com grows, it will continue to show photos and albums very quickly.

DIWA member Steves Digicams have published their review of the 5 megapixel, 10x zoom Kodak EasyShare Z740 digital camera.
“I was very pleased with our outdoor results. The Z740’s 10x zoom lens adds to the overall fun factor, allowing you to capture images that you wouldn’t even attempt with a typical 3x zoom digicam. The majority of our images were sharp, well-exposed and richly saturated. Sky detail was beautiful, thanks in part to the very low noise levels in high/low contrast areas. Its Auto white balance setting produced true to life colors in a variety of lighting conditions. We found the Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) and LCD quite usable in bright sunlight, and the rubber eyecup around the EVF helps tremendously to block out ambient light.”

DIWA Steves Digicams have published their review of the Kodak EasyShare Z700, a 4 megapixel digital camera with 5x optical zoom lens.
“The second “Z” series model we have seen from Kodak (as of 4/2005), the EasyShare Z700 is an affordable “mid zoom” digicam that shares many of its features with its big brother, the Z740 . It incorporates a 4-megapixel CCD imager with a high-quality Kodak Retinar 5x optical zoom lens. Like its big brother, the Z700 can be easily used by any member in your household. For the beginner, there’s an “Auto"matic mode, the novice will enjoy the Program AE and Scene modes, and the more experienced users will appreciate the Aperture priority, Shutter priority and Manual modes.”

Photo-i have started an interactive review of the Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 II film scanner, the successor to the popular Scan Elite 5400 model.
“In this predominantly digital age a good quality dedicated film scanner is becoming harder to find, especially as many flatbed scanners are now offering similar resolution figures. Many will argue that you can’t beat a good quality dedicated film scanner and I wouldn’t disagree with that fact either. Minolta are a key player in the film scanner area, their scanners provide excellent value for money and they also do a great job of converting analogue film to digital files. For a photographer who has been shooting film and has now moved over to digital, this scanner may offer the last link between film and digital capture. In this review I will make a point of testing how well the Konica Minolta 5400 II scanner performs against a flatbed scanner with a TPU.”

Imaging Resource have published their review of the 5 megapixel Epson L-500V digital camera.
“The Epson L-500V is the first digital camera from that company in quite a while, but their (much) earlier PhotoPC 3000 and 3100 were among my favorites at the time. The new Epson L-500V happily carries forward many of the hallmarks of the earlier Epson models, including good color and build quality. Among its most salient points though, the Epson 500V sports one of the most downright beautiful LCDs I’ve yet seen in a digital camera. All in all, the L-500V is an excellent product with which to mark Epson’s return to the consumer digital camera market. - Read on for all the details!”

Pocket-Lint have published the first online review of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T7, a 5 megapixel digital camera with a 2.5 inch LCD screen and a 3x optical zoom lens.
”...the drain on the battery is unbelievable. We were given a full charged battery and within an hour of use (and not really using the flash) we were already running low on juice. The second is that there is no optical viewfinder on the T7. While we realise that more and more compacts are being made without an optical viewfinder, with such a large screen that has such a high battery drain it would have made sense to include an option that didn’t mean you had to rely on the power guzzling screen.”

CNET have published the first online review of the HP Photosmart R717, a 6.2 megapixel digicam with a 1.8 inch LCD screen and 3x optical zoom lens in a stylish stainless steel body.
“It has a well-conceived design, a few interesting features, and decent image quality, but the one thing that the 6.2-megapixel HP Photosmart R717 has in spades is a crippling case of sloth. We’re talking performance that makes you feel like you’re operating in bullet-time, like Keanu Reeves in The Matrix, without the benefits of superhuman reflexes or the ability to fly. But despite some redeeming qualities—a menu and control layout that are easy for even novices to master, an effective panorama mode, and a very good macro setting that yields sharp results—the R717’s subpar performance makes us hestitant to recommend it unreservedly.”

The Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z20 is an ultra-zoom digital camera that promises a lot in exchange for a relatively small amount of money. Based around a 5 megapixel CCD sensor and an 8x zoom lens that is equivalent to 36-290mm on a 35mm camera, the Konica Minolta Z20 has an amazing list of advanced features that make you look twice at its budget price-tag. The Konica Minolta Z20 has a very fast start-up time of around 0.5 second, semi-automatic and manual exposure modes, futuristic body design, rapid autofocus and a macro mode that that lets you focus as close as 1cm from your subject. Six months ago I enthusiastically reviewed the Z20’s predecessor, the 3 megapixel DiMAGE Z10. Can the Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z20 maintain the same high standards that the Z10 set? Carry on reading to discover the answer.
