Conclusion

The GF 20-35mm F4 R WR is an excellent ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for Fujifilm's maturing medium-format system, offering enough versatility and quality to deserve a place in every GFX shooter's camera bag.

The GF 20-35mm is a tack-sharp lens throughout the zoom and aperture range, exhibiting almost no chromatic aberrations with negligible distortion, and is capable of producing some nice bokeh effects despite being a wide-angle lens and only having an f/4 maximum aperture.

Vignetting at wide-open apertures is the only real optical issue of note, although it's easy enough to remove in post-processing. Alternatively stopping down the aperture by 2 stops solves this problem altogether.

The linear AF motor is quick and quiet and the build quality is excellent, as with most of Fujifilm's lenses, with the traditional aperture ring being very welcome. Manual focusing is a veritable pleasure thanks to the well-damped focusing ring and the on-camera focusing aids.

The GF 20-35mm F4 R WR would make a great partner for the Fujifilm GF 32-64mm f4 R LM WR standard zoom, with both lenses covering an effective focal range of 16-51mm in 35mm terms.

Overall, Fujifilm have certainly delivered the goods with their new medium format ultra-wide-angle zoom, which is well worth the substantial investment.
