Nikon Z 35mm f/1.4 Review
Conclusion
Nikon continue to expand their mirrorless camera range with the launch of a faster f/1.4 version of the classic 35mm lens.
This is the first ever f/1.4 lens that Nikon have released for Z-series full-frame cameras, followed closely by a 50mm f/1.4 that we'll also be reviewing soon.
The Z 35mm f/1.4 is significantly cheaper than 2018's Nikon Z 35mm f/1.8 S, which is slightly smaller and lighter but offers a slower maximum aperture than the newer lens.
Designated with the “S” moniker for ultimate sharpness, the f/1.8 version is slightly sharper wide-open than its new stablemate, but it obviously doesn't offer the same maximum aperture of f/1.4.
Ultimately, if we had to choose one of these two 35mm lenses, we'd opt for the cheaper, faster f/1.4 version with its useful control ring and accept the minor trade-offs of slightly less sharpness and extra weight.
Nikon have kept the design of the Z 35mm f/1.4 very simple, with just the focus and control rings to worry about.
Some users may wish for extras, such as an AF/MF switch, focus distance indicator or aperture ring, but it’s likely that the vast majority of consumers will be using it with autofocus enabled.
Despite the budget price-tag, it’s good to see that it shares the same level of weatherproofing as the Z7 II camera body that we tested it with, not to forget a satisfyingly quick and quiet auto-focus system.
Overall, the 35mm f/1.4 is a very welcome addition to Nikon's range of mirrorless camera lenses, especially as it's a lot cheaper than the older Z 35mm f/1.8 S.
