Tamron have announced the upcoming launch of the SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 telephoto zoom lens. This second-generation lens builds upon the success of the SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD, which was announced in December 2013, but promises to deliver superior optical performance with today’s high resolution DSLRs and to add improvements to several features including the speed and accuracy of the Vibration Compensation and auto focus systems. The design incorporates an upgraded optical construction (21 elements in 13 groups, including 3 low-dispersion lens elements) and a metal lens barrel. The minimum object distance has been reduced to 2.2m from 2.7m in the previous model. A new FLEX ZOOM LOCK mechanism enables the locking of the zoom ring at any position, while the Vibration Compensation system has been upgraded to offer three distinct image stabilisation modes; Standard, Panning and VC Mode 3, which prioritises the stabilisation of the captured images and forgoes the stabilisation of the viewfinder image. Additionally, an electromagnetic diaphragm system, which has been a standard feature for Canon-mount lenses, is now employed in the Nikon version too. Two exclusive, separately sold teleconverters, which perfectly match the optics of the new SP 150-600mm G2 offer 1.4x and 2.0x magnification to extend the lens' reach to 1,200mm. The Canon and Nikon mount models will be launched in the second half of September, with a Sony version being released at a later date. In teh US, the lens will be available for $1,399.

Canon today announced further details about the Pro Solutions show held on 25th and 26th October 2011 at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London. This year the show will feature a live professional film set hosted by digital cinematographer Phillip Bloom and remote location filmmaker and photographer Phil Coates. The live demonstrations will feature Canon’s latest XF range of professional camcorders, Canon broadcast lenses and EOS DSLR cameras. Additionally, the show will feature a large-scale panorama of London shot on the EOS 5D Mark II with an EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens using a GigaPan Epic Pro moving head. Canon has announced further details about the Pro Photo Solutions Show scheduled for 26th and 27th October 2010 at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London. At this year’s show, Canon will be running a separate seminar room with speakers like Phillip Bloom, Thorsten Milse, Clive Booth, Dan Cheung, Jonathan Scott, Ben Osborne, Brett Harkness, Matthew Lloyd, and more. The show will also feature a live professional kitchen hosted by chef and food writer Alex Rushmer – one of the last three finalists in the BBC’s MasterChef 2010. Mark Moreve, Director of Photography will be running live emonstrations in the HD zone using Canon’s latest XF 305 professional camcorder and the EOS 5D Mark II. Plus, a live studio will be at the centre of the show, and Andy Kruczek, Gary Fong and David Newton will be running live shoots and demonstrations.

DxO Labs have just added the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and Pentax K200D DSLRs to their www.dxomark.com RAW measurement website. “Our goal at DxO Labs is to cover the widest possible range of digital cameras, from RAW-compatible digital still cameras (DSC) to top-of-the-line DSLR,” said Nicolas Touchard, Vice President of Marketing, DxO Labs Image Quality Evaluation. “We are committed to consistently providing the highest level of RAW image data possible in order to build the most comprehensive database of RAW image information available.” There is also a new Frequently Asked Questions & Answers section.
DIWA member LetsGoDigital have published their review of the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“There’s more, however. The screen on the camera’s back side has undergone a revolution. Not only is the small Canon now equipped with a large 2.5-inch LCD display, it also proves of terrific quality. In fact, it is even better than those found on the EOS 5D and the EOS 1D Mark II N; this screen is bound to spark the jealousy of many a professional DSLR owner! The value of a good monitor can simply not be underestimated, after all, you will be dealing with it all of the time. The LCD now also shows the photographic settings, which is very pleasant to work with in practice. In their latest article CameraLabs consider whether or not it’s worth upgrading to the full-frame Canon EOS 5D digital SLR for owners of the 20D and 350D / XT.
“So the question facing owners of Canon’s 10D, 20D and even 30D, along with the 300D / Rebel and 350D / XT, is what should they buy for a really significant upgrade? Since we’re probably at least six months away from an ‘EOS 40D’, the most obvious answer is of course Canon’s own EOS 5D, but this has implications beyond upgrading from, say, a 20D to the 30D. The big selling point of the Canon EOS 5D is of course its high resolution full-frame sensor, but for people who’ve only ever owned Canon EF-S mount digital SLRs, the switch will involve more than just a new body. After all if the only Canon body you’ve ever owned is a 20D, 30D, 300D / Rebel or 350D / Rebel XT, chances are you mostly own EF-S lenses designed for their physically smaller sensors. “

Digital Outback Photo have started a diary-review of the Leica M8 digital rangefinder camera, which has a 10 megapixel sensor, focal factor of 1.33x and an ISO range of 160-2500.
“After reading some comments on the net we thought the noise would be more an issue with this camera. Overall the M8 can produce very sharp and detailed images. The noise levels are not like a Canon 5D but still very reasonable in our opinion. This is the first camera for many years that we really have to learn to use. Actually we only have get used to the rangefinder aspect of the M8. Over the next 2 weeks we will use the M8 as one of our main cameras. We keep you posted.”

“The low level of apparent noise on this camera is astounding. There’s very little noise even at ISO 800 and 1600, so you’ll be able to print your images at large sizes or crop into details without having to shrink the print size too far. Set the camera to ISO 800 and the files look like those shot on some other DSLRs at ISO 400. ISO 1600 starts to get a little noisy but no worse than many competitors at ISO 800 and even ISO 3200 could be considered “usable” for some purposes”

Canon have released a new firmware version, 1.1.0, for their 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.
This firmware update incorporates the following additional functions and corrections:
1. Enhancement of direct printing with specific printers.
2. Correction of the communication errors that occurred when shooting with EOS 5D and EOS Capture software after shooting about 138 shots.
3. Correction of the phenomenon in which the flash mode settings are changed from E-TTL to M (Manual) when EOS 5D is used in combination with Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 and Speedlite 580EX.
This firmware update applies to cameras with firmware versions up to 1.0.5 installed. If your camera’s firmware is already version 1.1.0, it is not necessary to perform this update.

“The Canon EOS 5D is a very capable camera, which produces silky smooth images right up to ISO400 and beyond that, noise levels are still very well controlled thanks in part to the full frame sensor. “If however you do have an existing collection of Canon lenses designed for a full-frame body, then the 5D will be a very tempting prospect. Seeing these lenses deliver the exact same field of view as they did on a film camera is a familiar and surprisingly reassuring experience for anyone who knows that, say, their 24mm would be perfect for a particular composition. It’s also undeniably nice to look through a large viewfinder which makes cropped bodies feel almost claustrophobic in comparison.”

Canon have released a new firmware version, 1.05, for their 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.
This firmware update incorporates the following improvements:
1. Fixes the phenomenon where the images are monochrome.
2. Fixes the phenomenon where the shutter cannot be released when using the EOS 5D + EF85mm F1.2L + Speedlite580EX. (*)
*: For EOS 5D units that contain 1 in the fifth digit of the body number (e.g., XXXX1XXXXX), the correction will not be reflected even if the firmware is updated to Version 1.0.5.
If you have an affected product that you would like to have fixed, please contact the nearest Canon Service Center.
This firmware update applies to cameras with firmware versions up to 1.0.4 installed. If your camera’s firmware is already version 1.0.5, it is not necessary to perform this update.

”...the D200 and the 5D are the latest cameras from the leading DSLR manufacturers, and are the results of big R&D efforts. As such, they ought to show where the two companies are going, and what they’re capable of. Popular Photography have just reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Nikon D200 digital SLR camera.
“Images from the D200 rival those from the D2x in resolution, color accuracy, and overall image quality. The D200 averages 2,075 lines of resolution (see test results). That’s the same as the D2x—and 300 lines higher than the Canon EOS 20D or new 30D (see our review of the 30D on page 62). It also delivers excellent color accuracy, on par with the D2x and nearly as good as the EOS 20D. But the real surprise is that the D200 captures images with slightly higher resolution and color accuracy than Canon’s full-frame 12.8MP EOS 5D ($3,000, body only).”

“Photo quality was excellent as well. Photos were properly exposed, with vivid colors and low purple fringing and noise levels. As is typical with D-SLRs, images are very smooth, and some folks may want to sharpen things up a bit. My only real photo quality complaint is that noise levels are higher than I would’ve liked at ISO sensitivities above 640. They’re not horrible by any means, but after just reviewing the Canon EOS-5D, I’m a bit spoiled. Then again, the 5D costs $3299 and the D200 is $1699.”

“The EOS 5D will likely be regarded as something of a landmark camera and shows how much digital technology has advanced in only a few years. The first “affordable” DSLR was the Canon EOS D30, a 3MP APS-C sensor camera which sold for $3000+ in October 2000 (Original price 380,000 yen). In only 5 years (October 2005) we now have a 12.7 MP full frame camera selling for about the same price ($3000). In another 5 years I would not be surprised to see a 15MP full frame camera selling for under $1500. However the 5D will be seen as the “full frame” breakthrough camera, just as the D30 is seen as the first really practical and affordable DSLR.”

DCResource have published their review of the 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.
“As you’d expect, the 5D starts up almost instantanelously. As soon as you flip the power switch you’re ready to go. Autofocus speeds will vary a bit depending on yoru choice of lens, but on the lenses I used the most (16-35 and 50 mm), the cmaera focused very quickly. Straight out of the box the 5D isn’t very good at low light focusing, and that’s becuase there’s no AF-assist of any sort (either with the flash or a dedicated lamp). Instead, you’ll need to use the AF-assist beam on whatever external flash you’re using with the camera. I didn’t have a Canon flash to test this with (believe it or not), so I can’t say how well the camera performed with one.”

“Noise levels on the D200 are very usable up to 800 ISO and slightly better than the D2X, presumably due to the D200’s larger pixel pitch. Noise levels are much lower throughout, although especially so at 800 ISO and above.”

Canon have released a new firmware version, 1.0.3, for their 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.
This firmware update incorporates the following improvements:
1. Fixes the phenomenon of large image files (1.7GB) being created.
2. Improves the brightness of the LCD monitor.
3. Fixes an operational abnormality in the AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) shooting.
4. Fixes the mistakes in the Swedish-language MENU displays.
This firmware update applies to cameras with firmware versions 1.0.1 installed. By installing this update, the phenomena will be fixed, and the affected cameras can be used without these problems. If your camera’s firmware is already version 1.0.3, it is not necessary to perform this update.

“The EOS 5D is a fantastic photographic tool which is capable of producing really excellent results. The caveat is that it takes a little more care and understanding of your equipment (especially lenses). We found resolution to be absolutely excellent with crisp detailed results straight from the camera (JPEG) and even more detail available if you shoot RAW. Different ‘looks’ can be easily achieved via Picture Styles (almost like changing film) and the range of in-camera image parameters has been expanded. Noise levels are essentially identical to the EOS 20D as is dynamic range, this is neither a surprise or a disappointment, it simply means consistency and the maintaining of an expectation built by Canon in the performance of its CMOS sensor.”
