Returning for its sixth consecutive year, the Marwell Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest is now open for entries. The popular competition is open to professional, amateur, and young photographers alike.This year’s top prize is an 8-day photography trip to Estonia worth £1,795 along with an annual subscription to Digital Photographer magazine. The competition has four categoriess including native wildlife (flora and fauna native or resident in the British Isles), cute and funny (Mother Nature at her cutest or most amusing), Marwell Wildlife residents and Marwell Wildlife endangered – specifically classified by IUCN as either endangered or critically endangered. X-Rite have just launched a new photography competition entitled,  ‘Capture The Color.' Each month, X-Rite Photo will select a new PANTONE colour for inspiration and five winners, voted for by the public, will have their choice of an X-Rite i1Display Pro, ColorChecker Passport or ColorMunki Display as their prize. At the end of the year, all winning images will be judged by X-Rite’s Coloratti to determine one overall Grand Prize Winner who will receive a Wacom Cintiq 27HD Touch graphics tablet. A major international photography contest called Proify is now accepting entries from around the globe. Organised by Destin Sparks, the Proify competition is all about putting the spotlight on up and coming non-professional/student photographers. There are eight separate categories people can enter including landscape; street photography; portraiture; after dark photography; wedding, panoramic, retro and HDR. The overall winner receives $3,000, second prize $1,000, third prize $500. All winners and high-scoring entrants will be featured on the Proify website for a minimum of 12 months. The 2016 Sony World Photography Awards are open for entries. Free to enter, the Awards feature five competitions: Professional; Open; Youth; National Awards and Student Focus. The awards’ prizes include the latest Sony digital imaging equipment; inclusion in the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House, London; inclusion in the 2016 awards’ book and $30,000 for the overall winners. New for 2016, the 14 Professional categories are now divided into two distinct genres - Art and Documentary. The change is to provide a clearer structure in which photographers can be recognised. Both genres also include new category additions, with Art presenting the new Staged and Candid categories and Documentary now including Daily Life and Environment. Also new this year, the British Journal of Photography will partner with the World Photography Organisation and its Student Focus competition. As part of this partnership, the winning Student Focus photographer will receive an online feature showcasing a body of work on the jounral's website.

The international Travel Photographer of the Year awards (TPOTY) are now open for entries. The 2015 awards have three portfolio categories, three single-image awards, a New Talent category for aspiring professional photographers, an HD video category, Young Travel Photographer of the Year (for photographers aged 18 and under) and the new Smart Shot category (for images shot on a mobile phone or tablet). The overall winner of Travel Photographer of the Year will be chosen from the photographers who submit two or more portfolio category entries. The winner will receive £2,500, the Travel Photographer of the Year trophy and a personalised Plastic Sandwich portfolio case or iFolio. Entry fees start at £7.50 and entry for Young TPOTY is free. The submission deadline is 1st October. Images can be submitted online or as prints.

111 shortlisted works submitted to this year's Atkins CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year (EPOTY) contest will go on show at the Royal Geographical Society in London from 22 June to 10 July 2015. Launched in 2007 by CIWEM, the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, and sponsored by Atkins, the Atkins CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year competition honours amateurs and professionals of all ages. The selected photographs and films examine issues such as innovation, sustainable development, biodiversity, poverty, climate change, human rights, culture, natural disasters and population growth. Nigel Hendley, CIWEM Interim Chief Executive said: “The EPOTY competition provides a platform to raise awareness of environmental issues fundamental to our organisation; climate change, environmental pollution, water resource management, wastewater and flood risk management."

Sony today announced a sponsorship of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain’s Inter Federation Cup exhibition and competition. The Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB) co-ordinates specific activities for photographic clubs through 15 geographical regions known as ‘Federations’. The PAGB Sony Inter Federation Cup will be open to all of the PAGB’s 15 Federations – each group will hold its own competition where they will shortlist 30 - 40 entries to submit to the national final. All of the finalist’s work will be shown at an exhibition that will open in Kent in July, move to the West Midlands in October and Wales in November.

The Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers (SWPP) has announced the winner and runners up of their recent Monochrome Portraiture photo competition. The overall winner is Matthew Woodhouse whose photo 'Three,' reprinted above, depicts an avenue of beech trees in Northern Ireland planted in the 18th century by the Stuart family, with the intention to impress visitors as they approached the entrance to their home, Gracehill House. American photographer John Moore has been named as the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards’ L’Iris d’Or / Professional Photographer of the Year. The winning work “Ebola Crisis Overwhelms Liberian Capital” is a hard-hitting series of images that cut to the heart of this human tragedy. Talking at the awards Moore said: “I collect this award tonight in recognition of all the photographers working in difficult and dangerous places right now, and tomorrow. I am very grateful to the Liberians who allowed me to photograph them on their most difficult days. I will always be grateful.” The photographer was presented his award along with a $25,000 and the latest Sony digital imaging equipment at a gala ceremony held in London.

The winners of the Event Photography Awards 2015 were announced at a cocktail party in the Barbican’s Garden Room. Professional photographer Miles Willis scored a double win for his artful capture ‘Portrait of a flyman at Hackney Empire’, taking home both the ‘Behind the Scenes’ category title and the overall accolade of ‘Best Event Photograph of the Year 2015’. Amateur talent Ocean Belcher, from New Zealand, transported judges to a passionate rendezvous between two lovers at a party, as they found themselves lost in the music surrounding them. Her image was named winner of the ‘Music Events’ category. Other winners on the night included Antony Alexandrou in ‘Private Events & Weddings’, Martin James in ‘Corporate Events’ and in ‘Experiential & Trade Shows’, and Steve Fleming in the ‘Sporting Events’ category, who wowed judges with the grueling drama and beautiful scenery captured in his photograph of two cyclists tackling The Fred Whitton Challenge in the Yorkshire Dales (above). All the winning photographs will be displayed, with the help of sponsor Perton Signs, at Square Meal’s Venues & Events Live exhibition at Old Billingsgate in September 2015.

PhotoVoice and theprintspace have launched the spring edition of their quarterly photography competition, inviting submissions which interpret some of the core values that underpin PhotoVoice’s work with marginalised and disadvantaged communities around the world. The theme of the second competition is ‘Stories of Perspective.' Entry to the competition is free for PhotoVoice members, and non-members can enter each quarter’s competition for £20. Submissions will close Monday 20th April.
