UK landscape photographer Greg Whitton has emerged as the winner of the Outdoor Photographer of the Year 2014 contest. The news was announced at the Outdoor Photographer of the Year awards ceremony on Sunday 15th February at the Telegraph Outdoor Adventure & Travel Show, London Excel. Greg’s photograph was taken during a six-day wild camping trip in Iceland with four other photographers. He says: ‘I took this picture on the last night of the trip. We hadn’t had a moment of really good light during the whole six days. When we reached the top of this particular peak there was thick cloud blocking the sun. My camera battery was running out and I didn’t have any spare in my pack, so I started to make the descent back to basecamp. After making my way about 50 metres down the mountain the clouds started to part slightly. The light only lasted a few minutes. I’ve got other photographs when the light became really epic, but for me this image, where the light is building, is more successful.’

The winners of the International Garden Photographer of the Year Award have been announced. The overall winner is Magdalena Wasiczek, who convinced the jury with her photo entitled The Ballerinas (above). "I like photographing the dry hydrangea flowers on a background of colourful autumn leaves in the beautiful sunset," Magdalena says. "The sun shone through the few remaining leaves on trees forming a nice bokeh in the background. Category winners include Carol Casselden, Marianne Majerus, Patrick Goujon, Leonardo Battista, Duncan Herring, Mark Gray and Albert Ceolan.

Thomas Cook have announced their newest photoblogging challenge, Explore the Elements. "We’re looking for bloggers to publish photographs they’ve taken which best represent one of the four elements," the company says. "All the categories are open to your interpretation, so you can be free to take a picture of anything you feel showcases your chosen element." Entrants are invited to submit their photographs representing Earth, Air, Fire and Water for a chance to win a £5000 travel fund and other goodies including a Fujifilm X-T1, an iPhone 6 with Bose noise-cancelling headphones and a MacBook Air notebook.

The Photography Show has teamed up with Aspire Photography Training to bring photographers a new competition offering a keen amateur the chance to pursue a career in photography. The judges are looking for three pictures demonstrating what love means to the photographer. The first prize is a place on the Aspire Bespoke programme, which counts pro-photographers Brett Harkness, Damien Lovegrove and Tamara Peel amongst its graduates. This 12 month course will show photographers how to build a successful photography business in the area of their choice. The second prize is access to a full online course of Advanced Webinars designed to help existing photographers take their business to the next level. The second International Landscape Photographer of the Year competition has just been announced. Open to all photographers. the contest is aimed at finding the best 101 landscape images from the past 12 months and publishing them in a beautiful coffee table book which will be available in a variety of formats. The judges will also be on a search for the International Landscape Photographer of the Year (based on a folio submission of at least 4 images) and the International Landscape Photograph of the Year. Prizes on offer include $10,000 cash, trophies, limited-edition copies of the awards book and large framed prints of winning images. The contest opens on 16th February and closes on 15 May 2015.

The Outdoor Photographer of the Year [(OPOTY) 2014 competition comes to a head this weekend at the Telegraph Outdoor Adventure & Travel Show, ExCeL London, where the judges will be announcing the overall winner of the contest. The prize at stake is a trip of a lifetime on the Fjällräven Polar dog-sled expedition. The awards ceremony itself will be taking place on the Outdoor Photography PhotoBox Stage and a live stream will be available on the OPOTY website from 14:30 on Sunday 15th February, so viewers can witness the event first-hand, see the winning and commended images and hear from the photographers. Now open for entries, the Atkins CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year competition is an international showcase for the very best in environmental photography. Free to enter, the competition provides an opportunity for amateur and professional photographers of all ages to share images of environmental and social issues with international audiences, and to enhance our understanding of the causes, consequences and solutions to climate change and social inequality. The main prize is the prestigious Atkins CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year title, along with a cash prize of £5000. The Association of Photographers (AOP) has announced its Student Awards photography competition is to launch on 20 February 2015. The Awards will be open to all students who are studying a course that includes photography as a part. There will four briefs, each set by a leading professional photographer. The briefs will be announced when the Awards launch. This year, London prolab and art printer, theprintspace are to partner the AOP for the Awards. The deadline for entries is 30 April 2015.

The World Photography Organisation (WPO) today launched a new award dedicated to mobile photography at the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards. Photographers of all abilities have one month from today to submit their best image which answers the brief "You get out of life what you put in." The twenty best images will be shortlisted by a judging panel, and showcased on the World Photography Organisation website. The one winner will be chosen via a public vote running on the website from 10-17 March.

The 2015 olor Panobook Contest, a major panoramic photography competition, is about to open. The entry period will begin on 2nd February, and photographers have until 3rd March to submit their best panoramic images to the competition. Calumet Photographic has just launched its new Student Photographer of the Year Award for 2015 in partnership with a host of major photographic brands. Designed to recognise photographic talent of students and to provide them with a platform for their work to be recognised, the award is open and available to any student in the UK. Prospective entrants are invited to submit a single photo of their best work - or three if they are a part of the Calumet Student membership programme - and up to 20 words explaining their chosen image. A panel of four judges, including Calumet’s Managing Director, Jon Warner; Professional Photographer, Rory Lewis; Canon’s Product Intelligence Professional, David Parry; Professional Photographer, Tom Barnes, will view all entries and shortlist 10 runners-up and one overall winner who will win an array of prizes worth over £11,000. The deadline for entries is 13 March 2015 and the winners will be announced shortly after.

The winners of the 2014 Terry O’Neill Award have been revealed. The overall winner is Giorgio Bianchi from Italy, who convinced the jury with his series "Behind Kiev's Barricades." The runners-up are Miguel Angel Sanchez and Javier Arcenillas from Spain. Microsoft and Thomson Reuters Foundation are partnering Talenthouse, a global community of artists, to present photographers with a series of career opportunities as part of this year’s Trust Women Photo Award. Photojournalists and other photographers around the world are invited to submit images capturing the lives and stories of remarkable women around the world, who are achieving "incredible things" in their communities. The selected artist, as chosen by a judging panel which includes Finbarr O’Reilly, Reuters photographer and World Press Photo winner, will have their photography showcased in London at the Trust Women Conference, the annual international event organised by Thomson Reuters Foundation which is dedicated to the advancement of women’s rights and the fight against human trafficking and slavery. The category winners in the latest Outdoor Photographer of the Year (OPOTY) have just been announced. Shaun Walby, from Leeds, scooped the prize in the At the Water’s Edge category with his exquisite capture of a misty morning on the river Wharfe (above). Greg Whitton from Solihull won the Light on the Land prize with his evocative photograph of a fleeting moment of stunning light illuminating Icelandic peaks. Craig Parry from Byron Bay in Australia picked up top prize in the Under Exposed category, for underwater images, with his wonderful half-submerged shot of a humpback whale swishing its giant fin through the blue waters of the South Pacific off the coast of Tonga. Stefan Gerrits from the Netherlands, triumphed in the Wildlife Insight category, Johannes Klapwijk won the Small World prize, while Sandi Bertoncelj captured the essence of what it feels like to be on a high mountain in adverse weather with his gritty black & white image of two ski tourers climbing a Slovenian peak, winning the Live the Adventure category. Ten-year-old Josiah Launstein, from Alberta, Canada, was crowned Young Outdoor Photographer of the Year for his image of bighorn sheep going head to head in battle.

The winners of the South Downs photo competition have been announced. An ethereal photograph of a dew pond at dusk by Andy Flowerday (above) has been chosen as the overall winner. “I have been past this dew-pond on several occasions and thought there could be potential for a nice image of it,” says Andy. “The sunset wasn’t going to give the glorious colours I had hoped for; however the cloud cover that was increasing led to some lovely soft shades of colour. I used a special filter to blur water and cloud movement. It was a very still evening – I used a four minute exposure and the tree didn’t move at all during that time.” A partly hidden cyclist resting in the shade of a leafy wood, taken by Neil Hulme in Eartham Woods, came close second place; and a surprising shot of a surfer wading into the sea at sunrise has won third place for Ivan Talboys.

The shortlist for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2015 has been announced. This year’s selection showcases a diversity of photographic approaches, which include video and object/text based works and encompass social documentary, portraiture and contemporary art photography. The shortlisted artists include Nikolai Bakharev for his exhibition at the 55th Biennale of Art in Venice, Zanele Muholi for her publication Faces and Phases 2006 – 2014, Viviane Sassen for her exhibition Umbra at Nederlands Fotomuseum, and Mikhael Subotzky & Patrick Waterhouse for their publication Ponte City. Phase One has launched a photo contest that asks entrants to submit one photo illustrating their concept: “What the world’s best [__________] is made of.” The competition is open throughout December, one entry per person. In January, ten finalists will be announced, and their work will be featured on Phase One social media sites. From the 10 finalists, a panel of three judges, including pro photographers Tim Kemple, Michael Woloszynowicz and Paul Reiffer, will make the final selection, and the winner - will receive a Phase One IQ250 medium format camera system to use for one month - will be announced during the first week of February.
