PhotoReview have reviewed the Olympus mju 1040, a 10 megapixel digital camera which measures just 16.5mm at its thinnest end.
“Photographs taken with the test camera showed most of the characteristics of a small-sensor digicam. Colour saturation was slightly elevated and both highlight and shadow details were lost in shots taken in bright sunlight. The test camera showed a slight tendency in such conditions to expose for shadows, making it difficult to prevent blown-out highlights without resorting to exposure compensation.”

PCMag have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix S210, a super-thin entry-level camera with 8 megapixels, 2.5 inch LCD screen and 3x zoom lens.
“Nikon’s 8-megapixel Coolpix S210 ($179.99 list) offers a slim profile and good looks, especially when compared with its more-capable Canon counterpart, the bulky PowerShot A590 IS, which fetches the same price. Unfortunately, the benefit of its slick design is completely overshadowed by poor image quality.”

TrustedReviews have reviewed the Nikon P5100 camera, offering 12.1 megapixels, 3.5x zoom (35-123mm) and the EXPEED digital image processor.
“As before, the P5100’s main strength is its overall image quality, although the extra two megapixels don’t make a huge amount of difference, with roughly the same overall level of detail despite the slightly larger image size. The distortion control feature does work well, eliminating barrel distortion at wide angle and also cutting down the slight chromatic aberration that is visible toward the corners of the frame when it is not used. There appears to be no negative impact on image quality, although it does slow down shooting speed even more, to approximately four seconds per shot, so you might not want to leave it switched on all the time.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W170 a10.1 megapixel camera with 5x optical zoom lens and 2.7 inch LCD screen.
“One of the effects is the signal/noise ratio. From the technical tests, it becomes clear time and time again that an increase of resolution on a small image sensor equals a diminishing of performance and in particular at high ISO values. For the Sony W170 this applies clearly from ISO 400, however, below 400 ISO is not that rosy either. The performance at 200 ISO and lower is reasonable to good. Still, it is obvious that this should and can improve drastically. Furthermore, the lens suffers from chromatic aberration in a way we would call a Carl Zeiss lens unworthy.”

Megapixel.net have reviewed the new Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W120 camera which features Sony’s new “Smile shutter"mode.
“This model takes above average photos for pocketcams in this category. For snapjacks looking for a totally automated experience, the shuterbox will capture decent images in most situations. Imaging Resource have reviewed the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS, a compact 10 megapixel camera with 3x zoom lens.
“The Canon SD790 IS has only one strike against it and that’s its 3x optical zoom. You might think the lack of a Manual mode would be another, but the Canon SD790 IS is designed for taking great snapshots. With its DIGIC III processor, it does just that.”

Steves Digicams have reviewed the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H10, a new 8 megapixel compact digicam with a 10x optical zoom lens.
“Image quality from our outdoor images is very good. We see excellent exposures and rich colors. And just like the H50, the only real problem are the slight chromatic aberrations that show up in the museum shot. The 10x optical zoom has a 35mm range of 38-380mm giving you the ability to shoot group portrait and landscape photography with the wide end and still be able to get up close and personal with a distant subject or single out a person in a large group photograph. As with all wide angle shots, you will see some slight barrel distortion as well as the aforementioned chromatic aberrations”

PhotoReview have reviewed the Fujifilm FinePix S2000HD, the first ever Fujifilm camera to feature High Definition movies and still photos.
“Subjective assessment of images shot with the review camera showed them to have higher than average saturation levels - even with the F-Standard setting. Image contrast was also relatively high and we found visible edge softening in many shots. All these factors were confirmed with Imatest testing.”

Samsung have announced plans to launch a brand new camera system that’s a cross between a DSLR and a compact camera. Samsung Hybrid cameras will feature an APS-C sized sensor, removable lenses that are smaller than current DSLR lenses, and a framing combination of electronic viewfinder and rear LCD screen. According to the report by Amateur Photographer, the first Samsung Hybrid model will be based on the same 14 megapixel sensor that’s used in the Samsung GX-20 DSLR, and will be launched in Spring 2010. Samsung’s announcement comes just weeks after Olympus and Panasonic unveiled plans for Micro Four Thirds, a very similar system to Samsung Hybrid. ‘Although we want to make the new system affordable, we are concentrating on achieving professional quality with this system. The most important point is that this is very successful in the market. A difference between Samsung’s system and Micro Four Thirds will be that Samsung will have a much bigger sensor.’ commented Samsung Techwin Executive Vice President Byung Woo Lee, who also clarified that Samsung’s Hybrid standard has no connection to Micro Four Thirds.
So what do you think? Is the announcement of the second brand new camera system in as many months a good thing? Who will win - Micro Four Thirds, Samsung Hybrid, or neither?

TrustedReviews have reviewed the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5, a 9 megapixel update of Panasonic’s best-selling camera ever, the TZ3.
“Panasonic’s recent cameras have shown significant improvement in image quality, and the TZ5 continues this trend, although image noise is still something of a problem at higher ISO settings. There is a noise-like pattern visible in darker areas even at 100 ISO, although this may be an artefact of the image processing. Oddly shots at 200 ISO actually appear slightly cleaner, but the noise reduction kicks in at 400 ISO and fine detail begins to deteriorate. At 800 ISO the image looks like it’s been blurred and re-sharpened a few times, and at the maximum 1600 ISO colour reproduction is very poor and the image quality is very poor.”

However, with an MSRP of US$799, it’s expensive.”

Steves Digicams have reviewed the Fujifilm FinePix S1000fd, the world’s smallest 12x optical zoom digital camera.
“The S1000fd’s shooting performance results were a bit disappointing. From power-on to the capture of your first image takes about 3.2 seconds. Shutter delay, the elapsed time between pressing the shutter and capturing an image, was about 1/10 of a second when pre-focused, and between 5-8/10 of a second including autofocus time. The Shot to shot delay averaged about 4.6 seconds without flash, and 5 seconds with flash. One annoyance I found was, the LCD/EVF blacks out in between shots with and without the flash while the image is being processed, which is a critical time for framing the next shot.”
