Canon EOS-1D Mark IIIPro photographer Lawrence Ripsher has reviewed the new Canon EOS-1D Mark III DSLR camera.

“The Canon 1D Mark III has become my new workhorse. It has all but completely replaced the Canon 5D I was previously shooting with, proving to me every time it is worth the extra weight and drop of 2 megapixels. Even though the 5D still produces superb high quality images, the 1D matches it in good light and is able to go that extra mile at high ISO settings. Likely along with the Nikon D3, it represents the best in low light shooting image quality.”

Nikon D40xDigiCamReview have reviewed the Nikon D40x DSLR, which features a 10.2 megapixel sensor, producing 3,872 x 2,592-pixel images, 3D Colour Matrix Metering II system and 2.5 inch LCD screen.

“Image quality is very good to excellent, the images have excellent colour, with high levels of saturation, contrast and detail, with very low noise. Noise from the Nikon D40x is very low, lower than the Olympus E-510, and even slightly lower than the Canon EOS 400D, the Nikon also provides a full ISO range from ISO100 to ISO3200 - with the highest setting usable in some situations.”

Canon 1Ds Mark IIIPhil Holland has published an extensive review of the new Canon 1Ds Mark III, a 21.1 megapixel full-frame digital SLR camera with 5fps continuous shooting and 45 AF points.

“After shooting with the camera with a few days under numerous conditions I can confidently say the Canon 1Ds Mark III is easily the most versatile full frame digital SLR currently available. Currently the only thing similar on the market is the camera it’s replacing. The 1Ds Mark II. In terms of pure image resolution the only cameras that come close are digital medium format bodies and backs. I’ve used a range of PhaseOne backs now and I know they can squeeze out more detail. That said you lose a lot of flexibility for that gain in resolution and in price point.”

Canon 1Ds Mark IIINorthlight Images have posted their first impressions of the new Canon 1Ds Mark III, a 21.1 megapixel full-frame digital SLR camera with 5fps continuous shooting and 45 AF points.

“Does the 1Ds3 obsolete lenses? Well, I tried the garage doors photo with my 24-70 2.8L and it shows up a slight lack of edge detail and softness that I just didn’t notice much with the 1Ds. That’s bad then? Well it depends - were the shots I took with the 24-70 sharp enough for the work I was using it for? - easily. So, will I carry on using it? yes, it’s a very useful lens for travelling round with. Will I be looking for Canon to bring out an even better 24-70 2.8L IS? most definitely.”

Pentax K10DChristmas isn’t even here yet, but already the rumour-mill is starting ahead of January’s CES and PMA trade shows, where the new cameras for 2008 will be unveiled. First rumour up is the Pentax K20d and Pentax K200D, logically-named successors to the K10D (pictured, first announced in August 2006) and the K100D (first announced in May 2006). The K20D will allegedly have a 14 megapixel sensor, instantly pushing it ahead in the resolution race, with a new 14 bit RAW A/D processor, improved shake reduction and 3 inch screen. The cheaper K200D will feature a 10 megapixel Sony sensor, 12-bit image processor, 11 AF points and 3fps continuous shooting. It all sounds perfectly feasible, although the original Chinese website from which this info is derived is rather worryingly bereft of details. Still, this should be enough to whet the appetites of all Pentax owners and would-be DSLR purchasers until the official announcement is made on January 24th (again, an unconfirmed rumour).
