Canon today introduced the EOS 60Da digital SLR camera, a successor to the Canon EOS 20Da that is optimised for astrophotography. The Canon EOS 60Da features a 18-megapixel sensor (a major improvement versus the 20Da’s 8-megapixel imager) with a modifiedinfrared-blocking filter which helps achieve a hydrogen-alpha light sensitivity that is approximately three times higher than that of a normal Canon DSLR camera. This allows astrophotographers to capture crisp, clear images of reddish diffuse nebulae. The high-resolution flip-out vari-angle screen allows photographers to adjust the screen for easy viewing without straining even while the camera is mounted to a telescope via a third-party T-ring adapter. Moreover, the EOS 60Da’s Live View mode is equipped with a Silent Shooting feature that eliminates shutter-induced vibration for maximum camera stability when the camera is mounted to a telescope or super-telephoto EF lens. As a specialised product, the EOS 60Da is only available to order from select authorised dealers. The estimated retail price is $1,499 and it is expected to be available this month.
In the UK and Ireland, the Canon EOS 60Da will retail for £1,174.99/€1,399, starting June 2012.

Bob Atkins has reviewed the Canon EOS 40D digital SLR camera, which offers a 10.1 megapixel sensor, 6.5 fps continuous shooting and 3 inch LCD screen.
“The EOS 40D is more than a minor upgrade of the EOS 30D. It’s basically a new camera with a new sensor, a new 14-bit processing engine, a new AF system and new features such as Live View, Highlight Priority and High ISO noise reduction as well as improved ergonomics with the enhanced 3” LCD. Though it looks much like the 20D/30D it seems to have a more “pro” feel - though I’m not sure why. Perhaps it’s the quieter and faster shutter operation that simply makes it sound better!”

DIWA Press Release
Canon cameras come in all shapes, sizes and price levels, from easy-to-use amateur models to professional D-SLRs. Three of the most popular models have recently passed the merciless DIWA testing procedure with excellent results. The semi-professional EOS 30D, the high-zoom PowerShot S3 IS and the stylish and compact Digital IXUS 800 IS all ranked high in their respective classes, and proved well within the demands of a DIWA Gold Award.
Amsterdam, December 2006, 15:00 CET : DIWA (Digital Imaging Websites Association), a world-wide organisation of collaborating websites, today has the pleasure of announcing DIWA Gold Awards to three high quality Canon models; the EOS 30D, the PowerShot S3 IS and the Digital IXUS 800 IS. The Canon EOS 30D is based on the DIWA Gold winning predecessor, the EOS 20D. At first glance, their appearance may seem identical, apart from the larger 2.5-inch LCD screen. Inside the ergonomic and solid body, however, a number of advanced improvements have been made, such as the implementation of Canon’s revolutionary “Picture Styles” image processing parameters. Spot metering and other useful features are also among the improvements.

Megapixel.net have just reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.
“Moreover, with the inclusion of a shutter mechanism rated to 100,000 duty cycles, the 30D is even more intended as workhorse than the 20D was. Clearly, the EOS 30D has to be seen as an alternative for professional users that are reluctant to invest more than double the price of a 30D into a Pro designated body, that is, regardless of anything else, still part of an evolving technology. Now, as to whether any of these improvements make it worthwile for a 20D owner to upgrade to the 30D — we’ll admit to being sceptical.”

In their latest article CameraLabs consider whether or not it’s worth upgrading to the full-frame Canon EOS 5D digital SLR for owners of the 20D and 350D / XT.
“So the question facing owners of Canon’s 10D, 20D and even 30D, along with the 300D / Rebel and 350D / XT, is what should they buy for a really significant upgrade? Since we’re probably at least six months away from an ‘EOS 40D’, the most obvious answer is of course Canon’s own EOS 5D, but this has implications beyond upgrading from, say, a 20D to the 30D. The big selling point of the Canon EOS 5D is of course its high resolution full-frame sensor, but for people who’ve only ever owned Canon EF-S mount digital SLRs, the switch will involve more than just a new body. After all if the only Canon body you’ve ever owned is a 20D, 30D, 300D / Rebel or 350D / Rebel XT, chances are you mostly own EF-S lenses designed for their physically smaller sensors. “

Does the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR (pictured) produce noisier images than its older sibling, the EOS 20D? Website Digit.no certainly seem to think so, as they have just published a whole article about it (in English).
“Does the EOS 30D deliver more image noise than the EOS 20D? I have analysed the results of all four cameras and the consice answer is: Yes. Although there are some variations between the two samples of each model, the tendency is clear: Both samples of the EOS 30D delivered more image noise than the two samples of the the EOS 20D.”

ThinkCamera have just reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.
“I’ve said this before - I’m a little disappointed this camera exists. The upgrades from the 20D are minor at best and it would have been great if Canon could have released firmware patches to bring the 20D close to the performance of the 30D. As it is I didn’t find anything important that the 30D had that the 20D lacked apart from pot metering. Screen is a little bigger and nicer to look at but really it’s an evolutionary change. That’s not to say the 30D is bad - the 20D is a very nice camera but some people hoped for more when a model got replaced.”

CameraLabs have just reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.
“But it’s important to look at the 30D in context. It replaces the EOS 20D which was already an excellent camera. Certainly few if any complained about the 20D’s image quality, so as the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Consequently the 30D enjoys the same detailed, silky smooth images with very low noise even at high sensitivities.”

Breeze Systems Press Release
New in DSLR Remote Pro v1.2: Canon EOS 30D Support
19th May, 2006: Breeze Systems today released DSLR Remote Pro v1.2. Photographers can now use Breeze Systems’ highly regarded software to control Canon’s new EOS 30D as well as Canon EOS 5D, 350D/Rebel XT, 20D, EOS-1D Mark II and EOS-1Ds Mark II, 10D, 300D/Rebel, EOS-1D and EOS-1Ds models.
DigitalCameraInfo have just reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.
“At 8.2 megapixels, with a 5-frame-per-second burst, a 9-point autofocus system, and Canon’s DIGIC II processing chip, the 30D matches its predecessor, the Canon EOS 20D, specification for specification. However, the 30D has a 2.5-inch LCD, which makes the 1.8-inch unit on the 20D look like a postage stamp. The 30D also boasts revised menus and image parameters, and a $1400 list price, $100 lower than the 20D’s introductory price a year and a half ago. Given the remarkable advances Canon made between the 10D and the 20D, it’s surprising that the 30D is so much like the 20D.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have just reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.
“The 30D’s ergonomics are very good; the layout of its controls identical to the 20D. It retains the 20D’s multi-controller, a small 8-way joy stick that’s used to select the AF point, set White Balance correction, move the trimming frame for direct printing, and scroll a magnified image in playback mode. I found it quite useful and a significant improvement over the 10D, replacing the two-step process involving the Quick Control Dial and direction switching button to scroll in playback mode. In shooting mode, the multi-controller gives you direct access to your intended AF point without requiring that you turn a dial.”

Imaging Resource have just reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.
“As did the 20D, the new Canon 30D offers impressive noise performance at high ISOs, with the result that its images at ISO 1600 are remarkably clean-looking, and its shots at ISO 3200 are very usable. Simultaneous with the increase in resolution, the Canon EOS 30D also brings improved shooting speed, with a 5 frame/second continuous mode and unusually deep buffer memory. For all its technical sophistication though, the camera avoids any sense of needless technology for technology’s sake: The Canon EOS 30D is clearly focused on a single purpose: Helping photographers capture excellent images.”

Bob Atkins has just reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.
“Since the EOS 20D and EOS 30D share the same sensor and same Digic II digital image processing chip, you’d probably expect that they would both show very similar noise levels - and you’d be right. . Apart from very slight differences in exposure and color balance, the noise levels are virtually identical. The Canon DSLRs are known for their low noise levels along with minimal loss of sharpness due to any noise reduction algorithms. Almost any camera can show low noise with aggressive enough noise reduction, but that leads to a significant sharpness loss.”

DCResource have reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.
“From most angles the 30D looks just like its predecessor, the EOS-20D. But take a look at the back of the camera and you’ll see the most noticeable difference: a large 2.5” LCD display. While the screen isn’t as bright or sharp as the one on the Nikon D200, it’s still much nicer than the one found on the 20D or Rebel XT. The 30D is very well put together, with a metal core and solid plastic and rubber outer shell. The controls are well-placed, and Canon hasn’t gone overboard with buttons. Some of the controls, like the four-way controller and playback zoom buttons, are downright useful. Like the 20D before it, the 30D supports both EF and EF-S lenses, and the 1.6X focal length conversion ratio is unchanged.”

CNET are the first online resource to review the new Canon EOS 30D DSLR.
“There are a few aspects of the 30D that Canon didn’t change but that could have used an update. The battery didn’t last for the length of one of my shooting sessions, or about 250 photos. The lens still casts a shadow when using the onboard flash at wide-angle focal lengths with some lenses. And the viewfinder still shows only 95 percent of the scene. Nonetheless, it remains the top-notch model that the 20D was.”

Popular Photography have just reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Nikon D200 digital SLR camera.
“Images from the D200 rival those from the D2x in resolution, color accuracy, and overall image quality. The D200 averages 2,075 lines of resolution (see test results). That’s the same as the D2x—and 300 lines higher than the Canon EOS 20D or new 30D (see our review of the 30D on page 62). It also delivers excellent color accuracy, on par with the D2x and nearly as good as the EOS 20D. But the real surprise is that the D200 captures images with slightly higher resolution and color accuracy than Canon’s full-frame 12.8MP EOS 5D ($3,000, body only).”

Canon upgrades best selling EOS 20D
Canon is pleased to announce the new EOS 30D, replacing the award winning EOS 20D. Retaining the 5fps, 8.2 Megapixel performance of its predecessor, the upgraded camera enjoys a larger, wider viewing angle 2.5” LCD, extended 100,000 shutter cycle durability, spot metering, and a variety of refinements designed to enhance the photographic experience. Targeted at an increasingly discerning population of serious creative photographers, the Canon 30D replaces a camera that already claims a significant share of the Western Europe D-SLR market, which grew by 120% in the past 12 months. “A rapidly expanding population of serious and semi-commercial creative photographers is helping drive EOS growth,” said Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe. “As well as putting many high-end pro features into their hands, the EOS 30D becomes a launching pad into the world’s most comprehensive interchangeable lens system and huge range of flash units and accessories.”

Canon’s new constant aperture EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM zoom lens; a great low-light performer
Canon today strengthens its EF-S lens series with the launch of the Image Stabilised wide angle EF-S17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. With image quality and construction approaching that of Canon’s renowned professional lenses, the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM becomes the fastest standard focal length zoom for EF–S mount cameras such as the new EOS 30D. Combining constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range with Canon’s latest 3-stop Image Stabiliser, it delivers outstanding wide angle performance and framing flexibility in low light conditions. Specialist optics such as UD glass and aspherical elements help deliver exceptional clarity, sharpness, contrast and colour accuracy.
CNET have just reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Nikon D200 digital SLR camera.
“Overall, the Nikon D200 raises the bar a notch in the midrange digital SLR class, providing extra features and a more robust body than those of the Canon EOS 20D for only a few hundred dollars more, and most of the good stuff found in the 12.8-megapixel Canon EOS 5D—with the obvious exception of the full-frame sensor—for a lot less money.”

Shutterbug have published a review of the 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.
“Although there is much that is new and improved in the features and performance controls in this new 5D digital SLR, like the EOS lens mount, there is much that has become standard over the years. This makes this Canon EOS familiar, and easy to learn and use. Probably the most striking feature is its size and weight, much closer to that of an EOS 20D. I found the feel of the camera similar to the Canon EOS A2 35mm SLR I enjoyed using for a number of years. About the only thing that’s bigger rather than smaller than the big brother Canon EOS-1Ds is the 5D’s 2.5” LCD display on the back of the camera.”

Photo.net compare the image quality of the new full-frame, 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR with the cheaper, APS-C sixed Canon EOS 20D.
“It’s a win, but not a total “slam dunk” for the full frame sensor, at least as far as the EOS 5D vs. EOS 20D goes. With good lenses the results from the EOS 5D are better, though with noticeably higher vignetting when lenses are used wide open. Of course you can mostly compensate for vignetting in software, but still you may lose something. With low cost lenses shot wide open, the full frame advantage disappears, and in situations where you have your longest lens in use on an APS-C camera, switching to a lower pixel density full frame camera and cropping will lead to lower resolution images.”

Canon have announced their 6th straight year of record earnings, posting a profit 384.1 billion yen ($3.3 billion; euro2.7 billion) for 2005 on the back of strong digital camera sales and cost-cutting. ABCNews also reports that Canon is set to expand its business into flat-panel TVs, in partnership with Toshiba, using a new technology called SEDs, or surface-conduction electron-emitter displays.

This week Olympus announced the world’s first digital SLR camera with live preview on the LCD screen. This innovation enables framing of shots without the need to look through the viewfinder, and will prove an attractive proposition to anyone who is used to compact digicams. The E-330 is based on the previous E-300 design, however, which didn’t prove too popular with consumers, and the new model will set you back £900, which is more than a Canon EOS 20D. So does the new E-300 get your blood racing, or do you think it will go down in history as the first, but not the best? Would you pay £900 for it? And do you think all the other manufactuers will quickly follow suit and release their own live-view SLR cameras? Shout out now…

Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP Version 1.0 (Build 50)
The Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer provides the ability to view, organize, and print photos captured in RAW image formats from supported Canon and Nikon digital cameras.
The updated version of the software adds support for the Canon EOS 5D, Nikon D50, and other recent camera models from Canon and Nikon (see list of new supported camera models below). In addition, a new Save As button has been added to the toolbar, allowing users to conveniently save either an embedded preview or processed RAW image to disk as a JPEG or TIFF file.
ePhotoZine have reviewed the new Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens, which is equivalent in focal length to the popular EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM when used on the EOS 20D, EOS 300D and the new EOS 350D digtal SLR cameras.
“One of the problems emerging with Canon’s EF-S series of lenses is that you don’t really know what you are getting in performance terms apart from going by the price differences. They all have the same nomenclature so the EF-S 18-55mm ‘kit’ lens is grouped with the excellent EF-S 10-22mm and no one will argue that that they are not worlds apart. This offering of the EF-S 60mm Macro, like it’s price, falls somewhere in between the two. Distortion has been well handled with a figure of –0.237% indicating a very slight pincushion that is almost undetectable with the Mk 1 eyeball.”

Popular Photography have published their review of the 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.
“Canon’s New EOS 5D DSLR ($3,300 street, body only) is a study in the yin and yang of camera design. On the one hand, its 12.8MP full-frame CMOS sensor eliminates the 35mm lens factor found on all lower-priced DSLRs and gives it a potential image-quality edge. On the other hand, it costs more than twice as much as the 8.2MP EOS 20D ($1,300 street) from which it was cloned, and it’s missing a few of the 20D’s features. So you might ask, if the EOS 5D takes a picture in the woods and nobody hears it, does it make a sound purchase? Put simply, yes. Which is why we made it our 2005 Camera of the Year.”

Bob Atkins has reviewed the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens, suitable for the Canon EOS 300D and 20D cameras.
“The Canon EF-S 10-22/3.5-4.5 USM is Canon’s widest lens for Digital SLRs. It has the same field of view on a DSLR with a 1.6x sensor as a 16-35 zoom has on a full frame 35mm camera. The construction of this lens is excellent with no “plastic” feel to it. Focus is very fast using Canon’s ring-type USM motor, which also allows full time manual focusing without having to switch from “autofocus” to “manual” mode. The lens does not change length when zoomed and the filter mount does not rotate, facilitating the use of a polarizer.”

DPReview have published their review of the 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.
“The EOS 5D is a fantastic photographic tool which is capable of producing really excellent results. The caveat is that it takes a little more care and understanding of your equipment (especially lenses). We found resolution to be absolutely excellent with crisp detailed results straight from the camera (JPEG) and even more detail available if you shoot RAW. Different ‘looks’ can be easily achieved via Picture Styles (almost like changing film) and the range of in-camera image parameters has been expanded. Noise levels are essentially identical to the EOS 20D as is dynamic range, this is neither a surprise or a disappointment, it simply means consistency and the maintaining of an expectation built by Canon in the performance of its CMOS sensor.”

Technology website FiringSquad have intriguingly compared the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR and the 8 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 all-in-one compact digicam.
“Today we’re going to review two cameras. Both are 8 megapixels. Both allow you to reach the “super telephoto” range of at least 400mm in 35mm equivalent measurement. Both represent fourth generation products within their company line-up. The catch is that one is a $600 all-in-one point-and-shoot camera and the other is an over $5400 digital SLR and lens/accessory package. It would seem to be an unfair fight, but we’ve all been told that it’s the photographer that’s responsible for good pictures, not the camera. How true is that statement? What does that extra cash buy you? What shots will be missed with the lower-end camera? What shots are missed with the digital SLR? This is an article for anyone interested in digital photography. It doesn’t matter if you think you know the outcome, or even if your budget doesn’t come close to this price range.”

ePhotoZine have reviewed the new Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens, suitable for the Canon EOS 300D and 20D cameras.
“The lens is a well-built example that feels sensibly weighted, not being too plasticy but not too heavy either. The mount is slightly different to the standard Canon mount and is denoted by the absence of the usual red dot for location. This is replaced by a raised white spot that locates with a similar spot on the appropriate cameras, just to the left of the standard location dot. The S in EF-S stands for ‘short back focus’ and means the lens cannot be used on any of the older cropped sensor cameras such as the D30/60 or the 10D, as the rear element protrudes into the camera body and would hit the mirrors on these models. Do not try to fit it to the 1D/5D series either, as the same problem occurs!”

Virtual Traveller has compared a full-production Canon EOS 5D digital SLR (pictured) and the 24-105 f4L IS USM lens with an EOS 20D and 17-85 f4-5.6 IS USM lens.
“I practically ran home after work to start testing the new camera, as the light was failing (yes, I’m that sad!) I live near Tower Bridge in London so I rushed out to take a few comparison shots near the bridge just before sunset. My aim was to compare the cameras, not to take good photos. Also, the cameras were on their own in this test - I wasn’t going to be helping them out by using my knowledge. I know the 20D tends to overexpose quite badly in contrasty light, but for the purposes of this test the cameras would be left to their own devices. I was expecting the metering to be identical on both cameras, and it pretty much seemed to be.”

Luminous Landscape editor Michael Reichmann has posted a full field report on a pre-production Canon EOS 5D digital SLR, used on a two week trip to Athens, Istanbul and the islands of the Aegean Sea.
“Hand a new camera to a photographer and the first thing that he’ll do is put it up to his eye. It’s a reflex (no pun intended). For photographers who have never looked though the viewfinder of a film SLR, or a 1 Series Canon, the first response when looking through the 5D will be to ask – Who turned on the lights? Now the reason for the added bulk of the 5D over the 20D becomes apparent. It’s caused by the larger mirror and larger prism, both of which contribute to a vastly brighter and larger viewfinder image.”

With the announcement of the new full-frame, 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR a few days ago, Bob Atkins considers whether you should buy the new kid on the block or the cheaper EOS 20D.
“So the bottom line here is that if you’re an ultratelephoto fan and tend to shoot all your zoom lenses at maximum extension as well as hauling around the longest telephoto lens that you can afford and carry, then you may well be better off buying an EOS 20D than an EOS 5D. If you’re a midrange shooter with a fair selection of lenses, you’ll get higher technical quality images from an EOS 5D than an EOS 20D, though the extra $2000 you have to spend would buy you some pretty nice lenses. If you’re a dedicated wideangle shooter who can never get a wide enough lens, then the 5D will make you happier than the 20D.”

DPReview have published a preview of the Canon 5D, a new 12.8 megapixel full-frame digital SLR camera..
“My initial description of the EOS 5D when compared to the EOS 20D was ‘chunkier’, and I still think that’s a fair comment. It’s actually not that much larger than the EOS 20D, about 8 mm (⅓ inch) wider and taller but thanks to a remolded and grip (which now has a finger hook) and its extra weight (125 g / 4.4 oz) the EOS 5D does create the impression that it is both more substantial and more robust. Other than this the EOS 5D does look remarkably similar to the EOS 20D, even the control layout on the rear of the camera is virtually identical. The intention of course is to tempt existing EOS 20D owners to upgrade with the least amount of fuss.”
Website: DPReview - Canon EOS 5D Preview
No, I wasn’t asleep yesterday or under a rock. Instead I was at the Canon press launch in London and have only just returned to Paris, hence the slight pause in publishing news about the 5D and the 39 other new products. The upside is that I did get to have a nice meal, learn some circus tricks courtesy of the Cirque Bijou (!) and perhaps more importantly get to try some of the new cameras for myself, albeit rather briefly. The new 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR is much more compact than the 10D that I own and a little more than the 20D on which it is based. I preferred using it in conjunction with the new battery grip - without this the camera felt a bit short in terms of its height and I struggled to grip it with all the fingers of my right hand. The 5D felt very nicely balanced with the new 24-105mm f/4 L lens, which is itself very impressive, and the viewfinder is also a lot brighter than those found on the APS sensor cameras, even in the dim indoor conditions of Syon House. Will I buy one? I think I’ll wait and see until I’ve done a proper review :)
The Canon EOS 5D is announced. The Canon 5D is a 12.8 megapixel full-frame digital SLR camera. The 5D uses the Digic II processor and features a 2.5 inch LCD screen. The BG-E4 is a new battery grip designed especially for the EOS 5D. The Canon EOS 5D will be available from October 2005 for £2539.99 RRP inc. VAT/ €3699.99 RRP inc VAT.

PCMagazine have published their review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
“Canon and Nikon have long been head-to-head competitors in the SLR (single-lens reflex) camera market, and that fierce rivalry has carried over into the digital-SLR market as well. The $1,499 Canon EOS 20D body is Canon’s latest counter to Nikon’s best-selling $999 Nikon D70 body, which was an Editors’ Choice winner in the digital SLR category (and Nikon’s answer to Canon’s $900 Digital Rebel). In addition to offering a higher resolution and better construction than the D70, the EOS 20D is a stellar performer capable of capturing spectacular images.”

TopicPoint have published their review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“I’m happy to say that in use, the 350D performs extremely well. It turns on almost instantly, wakes up almost instantly, has an imperceptible shutter delay, and feels fast and snappy in use. This is a huge improvement over my older Canon 10D. In addition, uploading pictures over the USB cable is noticeably faster than the 10D. Shooting continuously, it can do approximately 3 frames per second for 14 JPEG images in a row or 4 RAW images in a row. In use, the camera is moderately quiet- the shutter is definitely quieter than the rather noisy Canon 20D, but, slightly louder than the Canon 10D. “

DCResource have published their review of the new Nikon D70s DSLR camera.
“Overall I highly recommend the Nikon D70s to anyone who wants a well built, high performance digital SLR from a company with a huge collection of lenses. If you already have Nikkor lenses than the D70s is a no-brainer. If you’re just starting out things get a little more difficult. The Canon EOS-20D costs a lot more but is definitely a better camera in almost every way. The Rebel XT costs about the same and offers more a higher resolution sensor, USB 2.0 High Speed support, more advanced white balance controls, and an optional battery grip. At the same time it feels a lot cheaper in the hand, something which bothered me quite a bit.”

Canon Europe Press Release
Canon, a leader in photographic and imaging technology, today announces the launch of the EOS 20Da – a digital SLR optimised for astrophotography. Based on the popular EOS 20D camera and joining it as a companion model in Canon’s product line, the new EOS 20Da digital SLR specifically addresses the needs of astrophotography with features such as a live preview on the LCD monitor and a modified low-pass filter optimised for photographing the night sky in brilliant detail.
The low-pass filter positioned in front of the EOS 20Da’s 8.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor has been modified to yield sharper and higher contrast images of various astronomical phenomena such as diffuse reddish nebulae. The modification increases the transmission of light at the wavelength of 656nm, known as the Hydrogen Alpha line, or H? wavelength, by a factor of 2.5x compared to the standard EOS 20D digital SLR.
Canon USA have issued an advisory note on their website about two separate issues with images disappearing on a number their digital SLR cameras. Canon are planning to issue new firmware to address the first problem, whilst Lexar also plan to offer a free firmware update by the end of May. Read on for all the details…

DIWA member e-fotografija have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“The EOS 350D is a camera that is a pleasure to use for hobby photographers. Unfortunately there is still no DSLR camera under 500EUR, I expect that to happen by the end of this year, so there’s no cheap alternative to upgrade to a higher class. Here’s something to remember. If you are an advanced photographer and shoot a lot of photos, the EOS 350D can only be a camera to step into the digital world or a back-up camera. Don’t think that the EOS 350D, despite many improvements over the EOS 300D, is in the same range as is the EOS 20D. The EOS 350D is much clumsier. Focusing, metering and speed of workflow are much better on the EOS 20D. It is just the same as is with film cameras.”

AnandTech have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“There is no doubt about it. The Canon EOS 350D is incredibly impressive for an entry-level digital SLR. In virtually all of our tests, it performed on par with its older and more expensive prosumer brother - the Canon EOS 20D. One of the biggest performance upgrades from the original digital rebel is the DIGIC II image processor. The DIGIC II processor provides the 350D with blazing fast processing speed and very low-noise images. In our timing tests, the 350D proved to be just as fast as the 20D, which is leaps and bounds faster than the original DRebel (300D). It has a remarkable startup time of 0.31 sec and, of course, shutter lag is of no concern.”

DigitalCameraReview have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“In the end, the Digital Rebel XT is a quality camera with more than enough flexibility to keep a large majority of consumers happy as well as professionals. Canon poised the XT to help recapture the market share of dSLRs lost to Nikon’s excellent D70 which captured 40% of dSLR sales (according to Nikon that is). The XT is a major upgrade from the Digital Rebel in just about every aspect, but it is not a large downgrade from the EOS-20D. In this respect, it seems that Canon and Nikon will lead the dSLR revolution at this pace… and it will be interesting when Nikon reveals the D50 and D70s and how these compare to Canon’s current lineup (The paper specs from Nikon look fantastic however)!”

DIWA Press Release
Canon’s latest digital SLR camera, the budget friendly EOS 350D, has passed numerous DIWA tests with remarkable scoring results. Its low price, combined with outstanding image quality, high speed processing and fast response, qualified for a Gold Award from DIWA’s comprehensive and mercyless testing procedure.
Amsterdam, 6. May, 2005 - DIWA (Digital Imaging Websites Association), a world-wide organisation of collaborating websites, today has the pleasure of announcing a DIWA Gold Award to the Canon EOS 350D digital SLR.
EOS 350D is an entry-level D-SLR camera, but performs in many ways better than many of its more expensive rivals. The specifications are outstanding for its class, piloted by its 8.2 Megapixel low-noise CMOS image sensor and the super-powerful on-board DIGIC II image processor. This enables instant startup and super-fast response, as well as high speed continuous shooting, image processing and storing. Even at highest resolution, the EOS 350D can shoot a minimum of 14 frames bursts at 3 frames per second.
SpotPhoto have published their review of the Canon EOS 20D digital SLR camera.
“Canon EOS 20D is excellent camera with well balanced usability, picture quality and speed. I can heartily recommend it to everyone. Just remember to get some good lens to get the maximum quality out of it. If you’re not willing to spend extra then rather check out Canon 350D and spend money that is left over from body on quality glass. It will make much more importance in your pictures than the body.”

Steves Digicams have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“Overall, the XT’s AF system was very effective, producing consistently sharp results. It was also quite flexible, allowing not only a choice of AF modes, but the selection of AF points (7) as well. The XT’s AF system performed well in dim lighting conditions, and effectively uses its pop-up flash as an AF illuminator when necessary. Although it is not quite as responsive and does not provide as many AF points as the 20D, the XT’s AF system easily handles most shooting conditions. Its responsiveness, flexibility and accuracy also distinguish the XT from high-end prosumer digicams.”

Firing Squad have reviewed the new Dual Core AMD Opteron CPU. I’m sure you’re thinking that doesn’t sound too exciting, but they review it from a photography point of view, testing programs such as Capture One, Bibble and Noise Ninja.
“In my article, I explain why the future of computing is with multiple CPUs and test a 2x dual core Opteron with real-world benchmarks including a suite of digital photography tests. The dual Dual-Core AMD Opteron was so fast processing RAWs with Bibble 4.2.2 that I repeated the test five times to make sure something wasn’t amiss. Turns out, it really was that fast. Processing 1GB of Canon EOS-20D images took just 4 minutes.”

The Digital Picture have reviewed the new Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens, which is equivalent in focal length to the popular EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM when used on the EOS 20D, EOS 300D and the new EOS 350D digtal SLR cameras.
“Back to the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens - it would not be my first choice for a macro lens (aside from product photography), but it makes a very good 60mm fixed focal length general use lens on an EF-S compatible Digital SLR Body. Since these bodies have a 1.6x FOVCF, the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens will frame subjects similar to a 96mm lens on a full frame body. Having macro capability in the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens is definitely a nice feature. If you are using a backdrop for a subject that does not run away, the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens will do a great job. Product photography is one such use. “

Canon is offering mail-in rebates from $10 to $500 on select products, including the professional EOS-1D Mark II, EOS 20D and a variety of EF lenses. Additionally, Canon is offering mail-in rebates on select EX-series Speedlites and IS (Image Stabilizer) Binoculars.
“The Cash in With Canon Rebate Program makes the speed and precision of SLR photography even more affordable to consumers,” stated Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president and general manager of the consumer imaging group at Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE:CAJ). “We feel that this type of rebate program expands the variety of photographic possibilities for photographers while keeping their experiences affordable.”
DCResource have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“All things considered I’d say that the Canon Digital Rebel XT is the entry-level digital SLR to beat at this point in time. It offers nearly all of the features of the more expensive EOS-20D but for hundreds less. My biggest complaints are the soft images, especially using the kit lens at smaller apertures, and some build quality gripes that I’ll get into later. But for those ready to move up to something bigger and better, the Rebel XT is where it’s at.”

Throughout the year, DIWA members rigorously test and review digital imaging products, awarding those with the highest scores gold, silver or bronze medals. Once a year, one of the gold winners from each of three categories is selected by the members as the best of the best – honoured by a DIWA Platinum Award.
DPReview have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“So it’s clear, the EOS 350D is a great successor to the EOS 300D, it puts right many user complaints, it delivers a smaller and lighter camera which feels better put together and delivers an increase in resolution. Image quality is just as good as the more expensive EOS 20D, if you can live with the differences between the two the money saved could buy you a very nice lens. The upgrade decision for existing EOS 300D owners is definitely more difficult, the increase in resolution from six to eight megapixels really isn’t that significant but some of the new features, improved performance and reduction size and weight are.”

The-Digital-Picture.com have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“The Canon EOS 350D Digital Rebel XT’s color LCD is 1.8” - the same as the 20D. A histogram + image is optionally available with image review (the histogram displays a graph of the brightness of each pixel). It is very useful for determining if the exposure was correctly determined. Unfortunately, the size of both the image review and the histogram is very tiny in this mode. There is no top LCD, but a mono LCD is included on the back for settings display (sans ISO). Incidentally, my 350D sometimes skips a picture when using the Cross Keys for image review navigation. “

DIWA member Steves Digicams have published their initial impressions of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR camera.
“It Many of the feature advancements and innovations on the EOS Digital Rebel XT digital camera are inherited from its EOS 20D “prosumer big brother.” Both cameras employ a Canon 8-megapixel, high resolution color CMOS image sensor, and provide the same effective angle of view, equivalent to 1.6 x the normal EF lens focal length. The consumer looking only at the fact that they are both 8-megapixel SLRs might not easily see the real differences between these two cameras. The 20D offers faster continuous shooting (5 frames-per-second (fps) vs. 3 fps) with a larger burst capability (23 frames vs. 14), more custom settings (18 vs. 9) and a rugged magnesium body. The Rebel XT was created for those migrating to digital that don’t want to lose the power or flexibility of a SLR system, but can’t justify the $600 higher price of the EOS 20D.”

Photo.net have published their initial impressions of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR camera.
“It looks very much like the image quality of the Digital Rebel XT is up to that of the EOS 20D. It’s also evident from using the Digital Rebel, that it’s a Rebel, i.e. a camera aimed at the consumer entry level, while the 20D is clearly aimed at the more experienced and serious photographer. Ultimately in many respects the cameras will be capable of yielding almost identical results, it’s just that doing it with the 20D will be a little easier. Of course there are things the Digital Rebel doesn’t do as well. It has a slower frame rate, a smaller JPEG image buffer, a lower capacity battery, the AF system is different and, as mentioned, the viewfinder is smaller. However for many people saving $400-$500 will make up for all those things. Personally, I’d buy the 20D, but that’s just me. Many people will buy the Digital Rebel XT and be very happy with it.”

Digital Outback Photo have just started a diary review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D DSLR.
“Clearly the 300D maybe attractive for people on a budget but otherwise it would be worth to spend $200 more for the new 350D. Not really because the XT has more megapixels but because the XT is a newer design and is also more reactive.
This leaves many photographers with the decision 20D or 350D. The key difference between these two cameras is the size and weight. The XT is a very small DSLR (only tiny bit larger than the Pentax *ist) and the 20D looks rather big compared to it.”

The website Whichlens.com has published a comparative review of the new Canon EOS 350D DSLR versus it’s bigger brother, the EOS 20D. Thanks to Mark Cho for letting me know.
“The 20D shutter seems to fire slightly quicker than the 350D. The blackout between shots is also slightly shorter on the 20D. The 350D is still very responsive, but a small difference between the two is present. The 20D has a faster, longer continuous shooting mode of around 24 frames at 5fps versus the 350D’s approximate 15 frames at 3fps. I say approximate because the number of continuous frames at 5 or 3fps depends on the speed of the card being used. Nonetheless, there is a difference in the size of the buffer and for sports and fast action shooters, the 20D would be the preferable camera.”

It seems that the price of the new Tamron SP AF11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 Di-II LD Aspherical (IF), a new high performance ultra wideangle zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras using APS-C size image sensors, will be $981.95 in the USA. That’s a lot higher than the $550 price that I was told by a Tamron rep at PMA last month, and a lot nearer to the price of the Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens. Have Tamron pitched too high - will all the Canon, Nikon and Konica Minolta owners out there choose the Tamron as their wide-angle lens, or the Sigma 10-20mm (price to be confirmed)? I’m guessing that owners of the Canon EOS 20D and Digital Rebel DSLRs will opt for the Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens instead…
Thanks to Simon Heard for letting me know.
Meanwhile, take a look at some exclusive sample shots and my initial thoughts on the new Tamron 11-18mm lens.

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT is undoubtedly the star of PMA 2005 show (called the Canon EOS 350D in Europe). An 8 megapixel digital SLR with the same DIGIC II image processor found in Canon’s professional series D-SLR cameras, the Digital Rebel XT is an amazing upgrade of the already very popular Canon Digital Rebel. Build-quality is better than you may imaging, certainly a lot better than the original Rebel, but not as good as the higher-end EOS 20D. The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT also even smaller than the previous model, although not to small for my large hand size. The popularity of the Digital Rebel XT at PMA and also after the show will no doubt be helped by the lack of any new comparative DLSR from Nikon, whose stand here is noticeably smaller than Canon’s. The Canon EOS 350D will cost £750 when it launches in the UK in March.

Tamron were showing their 11-22mm lens this afternoon, which was first shown at Photokina in August last year. The The SP AF11-22mm F/4.5-5.6 Di-II LD Aspherical (IF), an ultra wideangle zoom lens, is Tamron’s first lens designed for exclusive use with digital SLR cameras using APS-C size image sensors. It seems that this lens is only just making it to market, with March being the month for it to hit stores in the USA. This could be a great wide-angle solution for all you DSLR users, as its available for Canon AF, Minolta AF-D, and Nikon AF-D systems. It has the same build quality as my Tamron 28-75mm lens and felt well-balanced on the Canon EOS 20D that is was being shown on.

DIWA member website LetsGoDigital have just posted their review of the Fuji FinePix S3 Pro digital SLR.
“The brightness is excellent and the colour edges are no problem. The extended dynamic range is obviously more than just an advertising stunt. It offers a solution in certain circumstances. The Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro might not be that much better than for example the Canon EOS 20D or the Nikon D100 but it features its own special characteristics. It seems an exceptionally fine camera for portrait, wedding and nature photographers. Only, Fujifilm ought to change and improve the storage speed. That seems to be the one disappointment we found on this camera.”

DPReview have posted their review of the new, competitively priced Olympus E-300/Evolt DSLR.
“Although not a direct competitor to the Canon EOS 20D the E-300 does become the second only eight megapixel digital SLR and so comparisons will be made (and can be interesting). At ISO 100 the two are virtually indistinguishable, from ISO 200 to 400 the 20D looks cleaner although it’s a moderate difference. At ISO 800 the 20D begins to look much cleaner, and at ISO 1600 there’s almost no comparison, a large jump in noise is apparent in the E-300 sample. Visually the EOS 20D at ISO 3200 doesn’t look that much noisier than the E-300 at ISO 800.”

PCMagazine have taken a look back over the last year of new products and published their Best of the Year guide. The 8-megapixel Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom (pictured) is their recommended model in the Camera—Enthusiast category.
“Other models have longer zoom lenses and more intuitive menus, but the Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom’s excellent picture quality, deep feature set, and solid construction make it a great choice for enthusiasts. It boots up and recycles very quickly. In testing, flash shots showed well-saturated colors and strong, balanced illumination. Exposure and colors were good in our simulated daylight shots.”
Other photography-related winners include the Leica Digilux 2, Nikon D70, Canon EOS 20D, Canon i9900 Photo Printer and Epson PictureMate.

SportsShooter.com, which is orientated towards professional sports photography, have today published their review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
“Is this a camera body I would buy INSTEAD of a pro - level model? If I were making my living in sports and news photography, probably not. If my livelihood depended on my equipment, I think I would tend to learn toward something that would withstand the use (or is it abuse?) that Sports Shooters and PJ’s subject their gear to.
However this is a great camera, make no mistake about that, one that would work well as a primary body for many photographers working out there. Even for PJ’s, its size and weight make it appealing for many situations and uses. For the money, there is not a better deal out there for Canon shooters.”

DCResource have published what can only be described as an enthusiastic review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
“I’ll be blunt: the Canon EOS-20D is the best reasonably priced digital SLR that I’ve tested. And by reasonably priced I meant under $2000. There’s so much to like about the 20D, I don’t know where to start. Photo quality is excellent, with photos having an ultra smooth look to them. Color and exposure were both accurate. Personally I’d crank the sharpness up another notch, but that’s just me. Noise levels are very low, even at ISO 1600—try that with your fixed-lens camera!”

Creativepro.com have published a review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
“The most noticeable change in image quality with the 20D (in addition to increased resolution) is more-aggressive default settings. Following in the footsteps of the Rebel, the 20D comes pre-configured to perform a little more sharpening than the 10D, and its images consequently receive a boost in contrast. The camera comes equipped with a number of parameter sets, and it’s easy enough to change and customize them to yield images with more or less processing.”

If you have recently bought one of Canon’s DSLRs, like the Digital Rebel (also called the EOS 300D) or the new, flying off the shelves like hotcakes EOS 20D, then you will be very interested in Bob Atkin’s great overview of Canon lenses.
“This review is for the new users. The assumption is that they don’t want to spend $7000 on an EF 600/4L IS USM, and indeed they probably don’t even want to spend $1150 on an EF 300/4L IS USM. I’ve chosen a series of lenses which the new user might be most interested in. These are mostly zooms and mostly priced in the $200-$400 range. I’ve avoided recommending most of the low end, plastic mount, inexpensive lenses normally sold with Rebel series bodies because, quite frankly, they aren’t all that good.”

Luminous Landscape have cast their critical eye over the new Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens, suitable for the Canon EOS 300D and 20D cameras.
“This lens is small. light and solidly built. Sometimes Canon’s non-L series lenses can feel a bit cheap, but not this one. Focus is as fast as ever due to the USM motor, and manually focusing, if you’re so inclined, is similarly smooth. The lens is in the current Canon idiom, and there is little to fault about it with regard to either fit or finish.
The lens features a Super UD glass element as well as three aspherical elements The filter size is 77mm, though care will need to be taken with filters at the widest focal length settings.”

ProFotoSoftware Ltd Press Release 30/11/04
ProFotoSoftware have today released version 1.10 of PFS Image Darkroom for Windows,a program for converting Canon RAW images from EOS Digital SLRs into 16 bit and 8 bit TIF files as well as 8 bit JPEG files.
This new release adds support for the 20D and 1Ds Mark II EOS Digital SLRs, as well as improving the Raw Preview facility.
PFS Image Darkroom improves digital photographer’s workflow by removing the frustrating delays associated with Raw image processing. The software remains fully operational during Raw processing, enabling users to prepare the next image or set of images for processing instead of pausing whilst the processing is performed.
Fred Miranda has released Canon 20D CSpro, a new sharpening Photoshop plug-infor the Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
The Canon 20D CSpro plugin is a new sharpening technology specific designed to accommodate Canon 20D SLR files. This plugin is compatible with JPEG files straight from the camera or TIFF/JPEG files converted from RAW files.
lthough the Canon 20D CSpro’s interface appears simple and intuitive, complexity makes this plugin very smart: It provides everything from haloless sharpening, edge-sharpening, luminance sharpening, mode sharpening, and more with just the press of a button. With this plugin you can also choose from low or high ISO settings.
Other options allow you to sharpen fine detail. There are pre-designed intensity levels, and options to reduce color noise from high ISO files. You can even create your own sharpening settings, preview settings and tweak intensity results.

Bob Atkins has published a great overview of compact flash cards from a Canon DSLR point of view, including the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D (pictured).
“As you can see, it really doesn’t matter much what speed CF card you use with the Digital Rebel or EOS 10D. The camera really can’t write faster than about 1.4MB/s no matter what the CF card speed is. Faster cards do give slightly better performance, but the difference is small. On the other hand, the EOS 20D and EOS 1Ds mark II can write much faster and can take more advantage of high speed cards. With these cameras the use of faster CF cards makes much more difference.”

Bob Atkins has published his review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
“Probably the most obvious change from the point of view of camera specifications is the change from a 6.3 MP sensor in the EOS 10D to an 8.1 MP sensor in the 20D. This means that the maximum image size of 3072 x 2048 of the 10D has increased to 3045 x 2336 pixels in the 20D. What people really want to know is what does this translate to in practice.
Well, it’s not a “night and day” difference. Casually viewing an 8x10 print you might not even notice it. However if you make a large print, or if you significantly crop an image (of if you view the image at 100% magnification on a monitor!) the higher resolution is more noticeable.”

Imaging Resource have published their usual comprehensive review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
“Low image noise is one of the real standout features of the EOS-20D, particularly at very high ISOs (1600 and 3200). The chart above compares the 20D’s image noise levels against those of other d-SLRs, but as I’ve noted in the past, graphs like this tell only part of the story, because they don’t reveal what the image noise actually looks like. In the case of the 20D, its noise pattern is particularly fine and tight-grained, which makes it much less visually apparent and objectionable than that of many cameras. At the same time, the 20D’s noise-suppression technology does an excellent job of holding noise in check, without losing subject detail in areas of subtle contrast.”

DIWA Press Release 12/11/04

The semi-professional EOS 20D provides the end-user with first class professional quality images from an 8.2 Megapixel low-noise CMOS image sensor. Furthermore, the EOS 20D is honoured for its lifelike colour rendition, instant start-up, rapid image display and simultaneous storing of JPEG and RAW files. All-in-all, the EOS 20D proves to be an excellent choice for the semi-professional photographer.

Photo District News have published a review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
“The bottom line on the 20D (for those of you who hate suspense) is that it’s a solid camera with a broad market appeal. The consumer nature of the camera makes its application limited to those looking for a backup body or to those pros who don’t need the higher pixel counts or speed of something like a Canon 1Ds Mark II or Nikon D2X. Chances are though that if you need those features, then the 20D is off of your list and you’re looking elsewhere.”

DPReview have published their review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
“The real question is how many current digital SLR owners will see real value upgrading to the EOS 20D. It’s certainly a better camera than the 10D (faster, better AF, more features) however when you see side-by-side image comparisons it becomes clear that the increase from six to eight megapixels doesn’t make a very large difference to resolution and for the majority wouldn’t add any more value to their photographs.”

Steves Digicams have enthusiastically reviewed the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
“Canon’s engineers had a tall order when designing the replacement for the venerable 10D - improve on a camera about which we said in our April 2003 review, “If you’ve been waiting for a reasonably priced, high performance dSLR camera your wait is over, the Canon EOS 10D is here!” A year and a half later, those engineers can be satisfied with a job well-done, having developed the 20D with improvements on nearly every facet of its predecessor while retaining the same $1499 street price the 10D carried at the time of its introduction.”

O’Reilley Digital Media have published an article by Randal L. Schwartz which gives his first impressions of the Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
“One of the most frequent things I find myself doing with a camera is capturing candid shots indoors. For these shots, having the ability to drop into ISO 1600 (or even ISO 3200) is definitely an advantage because I don’t have to flip on the flash to interrupt the experience. The 20D is amazing in this respect. I was constantly blown away at the cleanliness of the shots at high ISO figures, and also that the little noise that I saw almost never manifested itself as variations in brightness, just in color. For example, Figure 8 shows a dark interior of a pub lit only by a streetlight outside. I could not even see the wood grain of the floor with my eyes, and yet it’s plainly visible in the image.”

Following on from my previous post, another new firmware update has just been released for the Canon EOS 20D DSLR, along with the following apology from Canon!
“We have discovered that the version 1.0.4 firmware released on October 4 had a bug in the program that handles the update. In cases where the update was performed with a lens attached to the camera, there were situations in which the firmware could not be updated correctly.
In cases where the firmware was not updated correctly, the camera might not power on, the camera might not communicate properly with the lens and flash, or similar malfunctions might occur.
Canon offers its sincerest apologies to customers who have been inconvenienced by this situation.”
Version 1.0.5 is exactly the same as 1.0.4. It just fixes the version 1.0.4 bug where if the update was performed with a lens attached to the camera, there were situations in which the firmware could not be updated correctly. Full details can be found at the following URL:
Website: Canon EOS 20D Firmware Version 1.0.5
After the rather stange disappearance yesterday of the new firmware update for the Canon EOS 20D DSLR, Canon USA have issued the following statement to try and explain exactly what is going on.
Canon Inc. has acknowledged the EOS 20D lock-up issue as follows:
Canon is aware of this [EOS 20D lock-up] issue; it is currently being investigated. It seems to occur very rarely, under extremely limited conditions. If it does occur, you can remove and reinsert the battery to restore your camera to its normal condition. Please note that this issue does not affect images taken with the camera. We plan to release a firmware update for download from the Web when the appropriate countermeasures are determined; we will let you know the schedule for this release when it becomes available.”
So I guess all you 20D owners will have to sit tight and wait for a new version of firmware to appear that will fix this issue once and for all.
A few days ago Canon released Firmware version 1.0.4 for the EOS 20D DSLR. Yesterday the firmware was pulled from their BeBit website, with only the words “Firmware update service is not available temporarily” left to show that the firmware was ever there. It seems that some people have installed the new firmware and experienced problems (like the camera not actually working) - let me know if you were one of them.

Bob Atkins has published an interesting translation of an interview with one of the Canon directors, Mr. Iwashita, with Bob’s personal viewpoint interweaved into the interview text. It doens’t contain very good news if you are one of the people that wish Canon would release a digital version of their popular EOS 3 film SLR:
“It seems that Canon are currently happy with the 3 tier system of DSLRs, the consumer level Digital Rebel, the “prosumer” level EOS 20D and the pro level EOS 1D mark II and 1Ds mark II. There are no current plans to introduce a digital version of the EOS 3. The current 3 tiers don’t really compete with each other and sales are good. There’s no reason to add a 4th level between the 20D and 1D models.”

Digital Media Thoughts have spent a week with the new Canon EOS 20D DSLR and published their thoughts as a review.
“One of the most important features of a camera is how comfortable it feels in your hand. This one felt pretty good to me. The magnesium alloy body, which should be familiar to 10D shooters, had a much denser balanced feel than the plastic body of the 300D. The rubber curved grip fit my hand nicely. At 1.5 pounds, the camera is a near perfect balance between a weighty feel without being overly heavy.”

Canon UK Press Release 27/09/04
Canon, leader in photographic and imaging technology, will release over 90 new consumer products in 2004, averaging the release of one new consumer product every four days. Of these, nineteen are digital cameras. The announcement coincides with the start of Photokina, the bi-annual European imaging and photography exhibition hosted in Cologne, Germany from September 28.
Canon holds the number one market position within Europe for Digital Still Cameras, Digital SLRs and Analogue cameras1. These figures reflect Canon?s ongoing investment commitment to focused Research & Development and the commercialisation of new technologies. Consistent with previous years, Canon last year invested approximately 8.2% of total global revenue ? just under 2 billion EUR -in R&D. Canon was also second in terms of receiving US patents in 2003, with nearly 2,000 registered2.
“We are the only company in the world to manufacture our own lenses, our own digital imaging sensors and our own digital image processors,? said Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe, commenting on Canon?s strong showing at Photokina this year. ?Our commitment, expertise and technological advantages translate into superbly built products of outstanding reliability and quality - the key reasons behind our number one position in Europe with digital cameras.”
Luminous Landscape have published a field test report on the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
“I found the higher resolution of the 20D over the 10D to offer a very worthwhile increase in the amount of cropping that’s possible while still permitting adequate print sizes. Some photographers are cynical about ever-increasing pixel count, and it’s true that for many for whom an A4 (8X10”) print is considered “big”, higher pixel count may well be regarded as redundant. But for those that want A3 prints, as well as those who find that they need to crop a shot because they couldn’t get close enough, 8 Megapixel files will be most welcome.”

BreezeBrowser 2.11 beta 1 can be downloaded from:
http://www.breezesys.com/BreezeBrowser/support.htm#20D
You need to install Canon’s EOS Viewer Utility v1.1 software for this to work. A full release is planned for early November after Canon have released a new SDK for the 20D.
Digital Outback Photo’s have got hold of the new Canon EOS 20D and have started their usual diary-like Experience Report about Canon’s 8 megapixel DSLR.
“Finally we received our 20D review sample. This is a very interesting camera. Not so much because of the 2MP more compared to the Canon EOS 10D but because it seems that this camera gets close in terms of low noise to the much more expensive EOS 1D Mark II which we own and like. We will do lot of comparisons between the 20D and the 1D Mark II.
We also take the 20D to Photokina as our only camera and then after Photokina we will focus mainly gaining real world experience. Please be patient.”

Well, most of you seem to think that the product lineup that Canon unveiled at the beginning of this month, which included the new EOS 20D DSLR, PowerShot G6 and PowerShot S70, was pretty exciting, judging by the following results in the latest PhotographyBLOG Poll:
Option 01: Definitely - what a great lineup! [264 votes]
Option 02: Yeah, they’re pretty interesting [213 votes]
Option 03: Erm, sort of, maybe [148 votes]
Option 04: I’m not really that bothered [136 votes]
Option 05: I couldn’t care less! [137 votes]
The new PhotographyBLOG poll is a topical one, given the recent deluge of press releases: “Are you excited by the recent pre-Photokina camera announcements?”
An article over on Rob Galbraith states that the Canon EOS 20D is due to begin shipping the week of September 13, 2004. You may be lucky to get hold of one if you haven’t pre-ordered, however, as “Canon USA is anticipating that it will take a couple of months before supply begins to catch up with demand for the 8MP, 5 fps camera.”

In this month’s Sunday Morning Photographer column Mike Johnston explains what he got up to in hospital, what he thinks of the Canon EOS 20D, and why he’s just purchased a Bronica:
“So what’d I do on my summer vacation? Well, the flip side of digital’s snowballing popularity is that film cameras are going begging, much like a used M3 in 1969. Being the astute market analyst that I am, I’ve perceived that the steepest price drops have been in professional equipment, especially second-tier professional equipment that even in good times sells without a snootiness premium. So before I left for Michigan, I bought a nearly perfect Bronica SQ-A, lens, and back for less than a few couples would spend on dinner and wine at Lutece. Old technology? To be sure. A fierce shout-out against digital? Not at all, friends, not at all. I’d take a shiny new (okay, matte black new) 20D over an old Bronica any day. It’s just that the Bronica is still a lot better than a gnarly little consumer digicam. IMHO anyway.”

Photo Mechanic is an image browser for both MAC and Windows that is aimed at the professional photographer. Rob Galbraith has posted a great overview of the features in the new 4.2 version.
“Also added is a customizable color class assignment, which can be used to rank or categorize photos, the option of directing photos to a different external editor based on file type, optional automatic launching of Photo Mechanic when a camera card is inserted, a faster photo preview mode (this has been somewhat broken in recent releases), initial support for JPEG and RAW files from the Canon EOS 20D and numerous refinements intended to make the program quicker to use (including renaming of files directly on a thumbnail’s file name).”

Amazon is now listing the new range of Canon digital cameras that were announced on Friday last week (except for the EOS 20D DSLR). They will all be available on September 15th - if you want to be first in the queue you can pre-order them from Amazon using the following links:
Canon Japan have made available 3 sample images from the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR. All three JPGs are available to download (4.5mb - 6.5mb each). The new EF-S lenses weren’t actually used with the 20D - instead the EF50mm f/1.4 USM and EF35mm f/1.4L USM prime lenses were used instead.

Canon UK Press Release 19/08/04
Canon announces the EOS 20D A new digital freedom
Canon, leader in photographic and imaging technology, today announces its latest Digital SLR: the EOS 20D. With a newly developed second generation APS-C size 8.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor, 5fps shooting speed, 9-point AF and Canon?s new distance-linked ETTL II flash system, the EOS 20D is the first semi-professional camera to deliver all the performance, speed and flexibility of high-end film SLR cameras.
Replacing the critically acclaimed EOS 10D, the EOS 20D is powered by the same DIGIC II processor found in Canon?s professional series EOS-1D Mark II. Second generation DIGIC improves on Canon?s already class-leading colour rendition accuracy and increases the speed of processing and start-up times. A rugged magnesium alloy body completes the EOS 20D?s professional look and feel.

Canon announces new EF-S lenses for its D-SLR cameras
Canon, leader in photographic and imaging technology, today announces the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM wide-angle EF-S zoom lenses. Targeted at advanced digital photographers, both lenses are designed to work exclusively with Canon?s EOS 20D and EOS 300D digital SLR cameras. The focal length ranges of the new lenses are equivalent to 27-136mm and 16-35mm respectively in 35mm film format ? a spread carefully chosen by Canon to reflect the needs of its rapidly growing base of advanced D-SLR photographers.
Both lenses feature Canon?s ring-type Ultra Sonic Motors (USM) for fast, near-silent auto focus, and a range of features designed to deliver a level of image quality approaching that of Canon?s revered L-Series professional lenses.

New Canon professional model Speedlite flash ideal for digital photography
Canon, leader in photographic and imaging technology, today announces a new flagship model in its EX Speedlite range: the Canon Speedlite 580EX. Now Canon’s most powerful flash unit, the Speedlite 580EX has a guide number of 58 (m/ISO 100 at 105mm) and an adjustable angle of coverage suitable for wide lenses to 14mm.
Replacing the popular Canon Speedlite 550EX, the Speedlite 580EX improves on many specifications of its predecessor, and includes new features to improve digital EOS SLR flash results. These include transfer of colour temperature data to optimise the white balance compensation, and auto-adjustment of the zoom flash position to best compliment the sensor size of the camera to which the unit is attached.
Circuitry modifications improve on the Speedlite 550EX recycle times by approximately 25%. An ultra-bright 3-LED configuration focus assist-beam has been designed to be compatible with all focus points within the frame of all EOS AF systems, including the new EOS 20D 9-point AF. The unit has improved exposure stability, with a tolerance of just ?0.3 stops.
A Dutch photography retailer has started listed the Canon EOS 20D and the other cameras that were leaked yesterday, complete with speficiations for all of them. The listed price of the 20D is 1998,00 euros.

Need I say anymore?!
Wll, OK then :-) It looks as though Canon USA have dropped the ball by posting 3 images of the EOS 20D in their press room before the official press release (widely rumoured to be the end of this week). They’re currently available at the following URL (although I wouldn’t expect that page to be there for very long…):
Website: Canon USA Press Room
As you can see from the pictures, the 20D will support the same EF-S lens mount as the EOS 300D, and there is a new EF-S lens in the shape of the 17-85mm F4-5.6, which will also be image-stabilised.
As for the actual specification of the camera, the best that I can do is this non-official list from a thread on the DPReview forums:
EOS-20D
8.2 MegaPixels
DIGIC II
1:1.6x Crop
9 Point focusing
1/8000s Max Shutter speed
5fps Continuous speed
25 frame buffer
EF-s support
E-TTL II support
0.2sec startup time
50g lighter than 10D
Price US$1600 RRP
(Street price should be closer to 1300 they say)
August 20 - Announcement
September 20 - On Sale
Also 2 Lenses will be announced at launch of 20D
EF-s 10-22mm /f 3.5-4.5
EF-s 17-85mm /f 4-5.6 IS (Will be sold with 20D also like the 300D)

As well as the new Canon EOS 20D and 17-85mm EF-S lens, there are also official product shots of an exciting new wideangle lens, the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5. Great news for all you ESO 300D owners out there who have yet to add a wideangle lens to your kit.
Finally (I think), the Canon Powershot G6 has also turned out to be real - the pictures that the French website Fnac.com posted a couple of weeks ago weren’t fake after all. As with the Canon EOS 20D news, Canon USA have now released the official photos.
Website: Canon USA Press Room
Bob Atkins has updated his Canon EOS Rumours page with, well, some more as yet unsubstantiated rumours, including the Canon PowerShot G6 news that PhotographyBLOG first reported a couple of weeks ago. There’s also a bit more “news” about the 20D:
“On the “20D” front, the only new rumors that may have credibility are that there may be 9 AF zones and that a new Digic II chip will reduce startup time from the current 1 or 2 seconds down to 0.2s (200 milliseconds), which would be nice. There’s also talk of a 4 way “joystick” button in the center of the rear command dial.”
Website: Bob Atkins - Canon EOS Rumours
I’ve not been following this too closely, as I’m perfectly happy with my Canon EOS 10D (and won’t be upgrading), but the rumour about an 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D, complete with an EF-S lens and 1.6x sensor , seems to be the most prevalent one at the moment. At least according to Bob Atkins and his Canon EOS Rumours page.
