DJI have intorduced a new Obsidian version of their Phantom 4 Pro drone. DJI has launched the DJI Spark, an easy-to-use, fun-to-fly mini camera drone that lifts off from the palm of your hand. According to the company, Spark is the first drone that users can control by hand gestures alone, successfully removing the barriers between them and their camera in the sky. Even if you’ve never flown a drone before, flying Spark is easy because the only remote controller you’ll need is your hand. “Controlling a camera drone with hand movements alone is a major step towards making aerial technology an intuitive part of everyone’s daily life, from work and adventure to moments with friends and family,” said Paul Pan, Senior Product Manager at DJI. “Spark’s revolutionary new interface lets you effortlessly extend your point of view to the air, making it easier than ever to capture and share the world from new perspectives.” The DJI Spark houses a 1/2.3” CMOS sensor that captures 12 megapixel photos and shoots stabilised HD 1080p videos. DJI has announced features and specifications for DJI Goggles, a first-person view system that gives drone pilots a seamless bird’s eye view of the world in Full HD. DJI Goggles use a beam splitter to display an image in front of each eye, as well as polarization to prevent any image overlap. Through DJI’s OcuSync wireless transmission system, up to two pairs of DJI Goggles can be connected to a single Mavic Pro aircraft. DJI Goggles can receive video data directly from the drone bypassing the controller to minimise lag. When flying with the Mavic Pro, DJI Goggles offer both 720p at 60 fps and close range 1080p at 30fps viewing with latency as low as 110ms. A touchpad integrated into DJI Goggles makes navigating the internal menu system simple, providing easy access to key intelligent flight features such as ActiveTrack, TapFly, Terrain Follow, Cinematic Mode and Tripod Mode. In Fixed Wing Mode, DJI Goggles bring with them a whole new way to fly the Mavic Pro. In this mode, the aircraft flies forward with enough rotational movement to simulate realistic flight. An AR trajectory prediction feature in Fixed Wing Mode makes using this mode much safer in complex environments. Priced at £499 (€549), DJI Goggles will start shipping after May 20, 2017.

DJI has introduced a new addition to the Phantom family of drones. The new Phantom 4 Advanced model improves on the original Phantom 4, giving photographers a 1"-type, 20-megapixel sensor and a mechanical shutter. The drone’s upgraded camera is capable of shooting 4K video at 60 frames per second. The more powerful video processing now supports H.264 4K videos at 60fps or H.265 4K at 30fps, both with a 100Mbps bitrate. The Phantom 4 Advanced+ version offers a 5.5-inch 1080p screen integrated into the controller. In addition, creators can now do more with the Phantom 4 Advanced’s increased storage capacity using a 128GB microSD card and a flight time extended up to 30 minutes. The retail price of the Phantom 4 Advanced and Phantom 4 Advanced+ is 1,469 GBP (1,549 EUR) and 1,699 GBP (1,849), respectively. Availability is slated for 30th April.

Western Digital today unveiled the World's first microSD memory card that meets the Application Performance Class 1 (A1) requirements from the SD Association's latest specifications. The A1 spec allows the new card to manage random read input-output access per second (IOPS) of 1,500 and write IOPS of 500, so it can quickly open apps and process photos, videos and accompanying tasks. The new SanDisk Ultra microSD card with A1 will be available later this month7 with a UK MSRP of £166.99.

The winning images in the 2016 international Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) awards have just been revealed. Joel Santos has become the first-ever Portuguese overall winner in the awards' 14-year history, beating photographers from 123 countries to take the title of Travel Photographer of the Year 2016. His winning entry features a portfolio depicting traditional fishing in Ghana and – in another first for TPOTY – an aerial portfolio captured using a drone, giving a bird’s eye view of one of the hottest places in the world, Ethiopia's Danakil Depression. DJI have announced two new drones for professional photographers and videographers. The new DJI Inspire 2 has a top speed of 67 mph and takes only 4 seconds to accelerate to 50 mph. With the new dual battery system, flight time is up to 27 minutes. A new forward-facing camera offers the pilot the best flight view for operating the master controller, while the camera operator receives a separate feed from the professional Zenmuse camera mounted on the main gimbal. The Inspire 2 supports the brand-new Zenmuse X4S and X5S cameras and will support additional cameras in the future. The UK retail price of the Inspire 2 aircraft is be £3059. The Inspire 2 Combo, which includes one Inspire 2 aircraft, one Zenmuse X5S, CinemaDNG and Apple ProRes License Key, is available for £6398. Customers who order the Inspire 2 Combo before 1 January 2017 can enjoy a special price of £6269. The DJI Phantom 4 Pro (pictured) offers a 1-inch 20-megapixel sensor with almost 12 stops of dynamic range, and a mechanical shutter that eliminates rolling shutter distortion in fast-moving scenes. Phantom 4 Pro can capture slow-motion 4K video up to 60 fps at a maximum bitrate of 100 mbps. In addition, the Phantom 4 Pro offers H.265 video compression, which substantially improves video quality at the same bitrate. Phantom 4 Pro’s UK retail price is £1,589 with a standard controller. SkyPixel is calling for all creators to enter its 2016 annual aerial photography contest in conjunction with DJI. The competition, which runs from 26th October to 30th December, is open to all entrants and features both “enthusiast” and “professional” groups to which users can submit their photos. Entrants can choose between the categories of “beauty”, encompassing natural landscape and urban architecture and “360-degree aerial panorama,” which showcases immersive 360-degree views from above, aided by Virtual Reality (VR). Photos can be taken with any aerial equipment. A final category, “Drones In Use,” features photos taken from any device of drones in flight. YI Technology has announced that its YI M1 compact system camera is now available to purchase. Featuring a 20.2-megapixel FourThirds sensor, a Micro FourThirds lens mount, a 3" touchscreen, an 81-point CDAF system, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE connectivity and 4K video recording capabilities, the YI M1 offers a mostly touchscreen-based user interface and comes in two single-lens kit (either with a 12-40mm f/3.5-5.6 standard zoom or a 42.5mm f/1.8 portrait lens) and a double-lens bundle. Pricing starts at $499.
Manfrotto have annouced the new Pro Light 3N1 Camera Backpack. This three-in-one carrying solution comes in two versions that can be carried in 3 different ways and holds 3 types of gear by configuring its flexible internal dividers: photo, video or drone equipment. DJI today revealed its Mavic Pro drone – a portable, powerful and easy-to-use remote-controlled helicopter featuring DJI’s most innovative flight technology in a sleek, foldable package. Small enough to toss in a bag and easy enough to launch quickly whenever the time and place are right, the DJI Mavic Pro's folding design compresses the entire drone to practically the size of a water bottle. Equipped with a stabilised, raw-capable 4K/12-megapixel camera and a visual navigation system, with a 4.3-mile range and 27-minute flight time, the Mavic Pro can be operated by the powerful long range remote controller, or simply by your smartphone at shorter range. When controlled by a smartphone, the whole system can be set up and airborne in less than a minute. The Mavic Pro’s U.S. retail price will be $999 with the remote controller, and $749 without.
GoPro has announced the Karma, a foldable quadcopter with a removable 3-axis gimbal stabiliser and a touchscreen-based remote control unit. Easily fitting in a small backpack, the GoPro Karma will become available on 23 October 2016, priced at $799 ($999 with a GoPro HERO5 Session camera, $1099 with a HERO5 Black).
GoPro have announced two new 4K action cameras. The GoPro HERO5 Black ($399.99) has a 12-megapixel imager, simplified controls, a 2-inch touchscreen, raw and WDR photo modes, voice control with support for seven languages, and a GPS module. The HERO5 Session ($299.99) features a 10-megapixel sensor, a single control button and voice control. Both new GoPro cameras can shoot movies at 4K/30fps, both are waterproof to 33ft/10m and both can upload photos and videos to the cloud while charging.
DJI has launched the Osmo+, which brings an integrated zoom camera to the Osmo hand-held camera stabilisation system. The Osmo+ camera has a total of 7x zoom, with 3.5x optical and 2x digital lossless zoom (only available when shooting at 1080p), giving it a focal length ranging from 22mm to 77mm without sacrificing Full HD video quality. Without digital zoom, the camera is capable of recording movies in 4K resolution. It is similar to, but not interchangeable with, the new Zenmuse Z3 zoom camera recently launched for the Inspire 1 drone system. “The Osmo+ opens up entirely new capabilities for creators who love the Osmo’s ability to deliver crisp, sharp and detailed handheld imagery,” said Paul Pan, Senior Product Manager. “From action selfies to detailed panoramas to motion timelapses, the zoom features of the new Osmo+ once again expand the capabilities of handheld photography to push the limits of the imagination.” The Osmo+ is available for £629.
PowerEgg, the first consumer drone developed by PowerVision Technology, is now available for pre-order. With its unique egg-shaped robotic design and the industry’s first gesture recognition remote control, PowerEgg addresses user demand for easy drone portability and handling. The drone's integrated 4K UHD camera can produce both still photographs and videos with panoramic 360 degree views on a 3-axis gimbal, delivering stabillised aerial views with an immersive “spherical” experience. In addition, PowerEgg’s flight software includes multiple automated flight modes that let the user easily frame their shots while the PowerEgg automatically manages its flight path. DJI today announced the Zenmuse Z3, DJI’s first aerial zoom camera optimised for still photography. Incorporating a 3.5x zoom lens (plus a 2x digital zoom function), the DJI Zenmuse Z3 is compatible with the Inspire 1, Matrice 100 and Matrice 600 drones and uses the company’s dedicated HD video downlink, Lightbridge and Lightbridge 2, providing up to 3.1 miles of HD transmission range. Weighing in at 263g, the Zenmuse Z3 has a 22-77mm (eq.) f/2.8-5.2 lens and features the same 1/2.3"-type Sony sensor that's found on the DJI Phantom 4. It can shoot still images at 12 megapixels with additional Adobe DNG Raw Support for maximum editing options in post- production. The camera also records video at up to 30 FPS in 4K resolution. Flight time with the Zenmuse Z3 is up to 19 minutes on the Inspire 1. Pilots can extend flight time up to 30 minutes with the dual-battery-equipped M100 and up to 39 minutes with the M600. Available soon, the DJI Zenmuse Z3 is priced at $1,000.

Panasonic have announced the development of their new UX series of 4K handheld camcorders, and the immediate availability of the VariCam LT 4K cinema camcorder and AK-UC3000 4K studio camera. The VariCam LT 4K cinema camcorder inherits the high-quality Super 35mm sensor found in the award-winning VariCam 35, and delivers 14+ stops of dynamic range with V-Log. Weighing just under six pounds and having superior capability to similar sized cameras, the VariCam LT is available in four kits, with suggested list prices ranging from $18,000 to $30,200. The new UX series of professional 4K camcorders are currently under development and scheduled for release in autumn. The AG-UX180 is a premium model and features a 1"-type MOS sensor, 20x optical zoom, 60p UHD recording; dual codec recording, IR recording in low light, and 3G SDI/HDMI2.0 output. Variable frame rate recording in 1080p is also planned. The AG-UX90 is the standard model and features a 1"-type MOS sensor, 15x optical zoom and UHD 30p recording. The suggested list prices of the UX180 are expected to be under $4,000, and the UX90 under $3,000.

Compatible with most GoPro camera models, the HEXO+ has a maximum speed of 45 mph and an operating altitude of up to 16,000ft. HEXO+ is currently available to purchase for €999.
Sony has announced the commercialisation of a new Exmor RS imager billed as the World's first stacked CMOS sensor with built-in hybrid AF and "3-axis" image-stabilisation. The 1/2.6"-type Sony Exmor RS IMX318 has a pixel pitch of 1μm and a resolution of 22.5 effective megapixels. The dimensions and pixel size make this sensor suitable for inclusion into smartphones and ultra-compact cameras. Sony aims to begin shipments for this new CMOS image sensor in May 2016.
Samsung today unveiled the PRO Plus 128GB microSD memory card. Built with Samsung’s advanced MLC NAND flash chip, this product is the newest addition to Samsung’s PRO Plus line-up, which was first introduced in 32GB and 64GB versions in May 2015. The 128GB microSD features UHS-I 3 (U3) and Speed Class 10 support, offering read and write speeds of up to 95MB/s and 90MB/s, respectively. It comes with a 10 year limited warranty and is guaranteed to survive operating temperatures from -25°C to 85°C (-13°F to 185°F) and non-operating temperatures from -40°C to 85°C (-40°F to 185°F). Data stored on the card will not be affected by X-rays and will resist up to 15,000 gauss magnetic force.

The 2015 SkyPixel Photo Contest invites both budding and professional aerial photographers to enter a selection of their best work. The competition is split into two groups, Professional and Enthusiast, each with their own awards for the following categories: Beauty, Unique Dronies, and Drones in Use, aimed at showcasing drones in the air, in addition to an overall Grand Prize. DJI have announced two new Micro Four Thirds cameras for their DJI Inspire 1 professional aerial camera platform. Equipped with a 16-mgapixel Four Thjirds sensor and a Micro Four Thirds lens mount, the Zenmuse X5 wili initially support 4 interchangeable lenses, including the DJI MFT 15mm f/1.7 ASPH, Panasonic Lumix 15mm G Leica DG Summilux f/1.7 ASPH, Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f/2.0 lens, and Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.8. While the Zenmuse X5 is in flight, pilots can adjust both focus and aperture via the DJI GO app or through DJI's previously-announced Follow Focus system. The DJI Zenmuse X5R camera shares the same sensor and lens compatibility with the X5, but records video both to an onboard microSD card as well as to a removable 512GB SSD on the gimbal's top plate. The Zenmuse X5 is available for pre-order at store.dji.com for $4,499 (€4,999), including a DJI Inspire 1 and DJI's MFT 15mm F1.7 ASPH lens, and will begin shipping before the end of September. The Zenmuse X5R will be available in Q4 2015 for $7,999 (€8,799).
DJI today released their most affordable video drone to date - the DJI Phantom 3 Standard. Designed specifically for first-time pilots, the DJI Phantom 3 Standard includes intelligent flight functions that make cinematic shots easy to capture. Using a standard Wi-Fi connection, the DJI Phantom 3 Standard allows pilots to see what their camera sees in near real time in HD, capture photos, start / stop record for video and adjust camera settings all from the updated DJI Go app. With a newly designed and integrated camera, the DJI Phantom 3 Standard records up to 2.7k HD video at 30fps using a 94-degree distortion-free lens. The camera also shoots still images at 12 megapixels in both DNG raw and JPEG formats. The remote controller (also pictured above) is an updated version of DJI’s previous Phantom 2 Vision+ controller, with an integrated Wi-Fi range extender and wheel to angle the camera. The DJI Phantom 3 Standard is immediately available for purchase at £649 / €919 / $799.
Digital imaging startup “Z” has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the commercialisation of the E1, a diminutive 4K video camera with a FourThirds sized imager and an MFT lens mount. Billed as the World's smallest interchangeable-lens 4K video camera, the new E1 is Wi-Fi 802.11N, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) compliant and comes with an Ambarella A9 image processor. Advanced 3D noise filters using motion compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) technology reduce noise and jitter, promising "incredible low-light performance" with a top sensitivity of ISO 102,400/51°. Proprietary iOS and Android apps provide the ability to control, live stream and manage content via a wide range of smartphones and tablets. Advanced users can customise the functionality of the E1 through a software development kit available in two versions. Once the Kickstarter campaign has been completed, the E1 will retail for $699 in a body-only configuration, as well as in a kit with a 14mm f/2.5 lens for $999.
Yuneec International have just launched the Typhoon Q500 4K quadcopter, which offers 4K movie recording and 12-megapixel still image capture. The newest member of the Typhoon family offers up to 25-minutes of flight time while filming with its CGO3 4K camera. The unit comes ready to fly with a standard ST10+ Personal Ground Station featuring a 5.5-inch touchscreen, while the 3-axis anti-vibration CGO3 gimbal camera comes with a fixed-focus UWA lens and is capable of recording Full HD videos at 120fps for slow-motion playback. Stills can be saved as DNG raw files or JPEGs. The Typhoon Q500 4K system is available for the suggested retail price of $1299.

The Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera is an interchangeable-lens Full HD action cam with a Micro Four Thirds lens mount and a Super 16 sized sensor. The unique feature of this new camera is the built in expansion port that provides access to many of the camera’s unique functions via radio model aircraft remote controls and other common remote control solutions. The expansion connector includes 4 PWM channels for using all brands of control gear, or custom wiring, as well as a single S.Bus connection which can accept up to 18 channels of control using the single cable. Offering 13 stops of dynamic range, 12-bit raw image recording, and a choice of a 60fps rolling shutter or 30fps global shutter; the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera will be available in July for $995.
With sales of consumer orientated camera drones on the up, and the technology getting ever more affordable, Chinese manufacturer DJI has announced what it is terming the possible “future of aerial imaging and video”. It has launched not one but two updates to its Phantom series. These are the Phantom 3 ‘Professional’ – a 4K shooting unmanned aerial vehicle with gold detailing and a suggested retail price of £1,159 – plus a second model in the Phantom 3 Advanced. The latter records 1080P video, costs a more affordable £899 SRP, and is outwardly distinguishable via its silver detailing. Gavin Stoker attended the London launch and was able to get hands-on with the devices.
DJI have announced the Phantom 3 Professional and Phantom 3 Advanced drones. Using DJI’s innovative Visual Positioning System), these Phantom 3 platforms can hold their positioning indoors without GPS and can easily take off and land with the push of a button. Controllers for the Phantom 3 come paired with DJI’s Lightbridge technology, which allows pilots to see what the Phantom 3 camera is seeing in HD (720p) at a distance up to 1 mile. The Phantom 3 Professional (£1,159 / $1,259) is capable of shooting 4K video at up to 30fps, while the Phantom 3 Advanced (£899 / $999) records at resolutions up to 1080p at 60fps. These cameras are stabilised using 3-axis gimbals to keep the video smooth regardless of flight or wind conditions. Both models shoot 12 megapixel photos using a 94⁰ UWA lens and a 1/2.3"-type sensor. ISO, shutter speed and exposure compensation, can be set using both the DJI Pilot app and the physical controls on the remote controllers.
The Canon XC10 is a new 4K digital camcorder that can also shoot high-resolution stills courtesy of a 1"-type 12 megapixel CMOS sensor. HDRlog has released the first update to hte standalone version of its HDRinstant software. Version 1 brings new features such as a tool to help you choose the sharpest image, user tone-mapping presets, image sharpening and adjustment tools. The innovative technology behind the program allows the user to create an HDR image from video footage, and its anti-ghosting capability removes motion blur when creating HDR images from several frames. After importing your video clip, you can extract as many images as possible, then select your favorite frame. HDRinstant will stack the frames and apply a special morphing algorithm to build the final HDR photograph. The Mac and Windows versions can be downloaded from the website below.
Black Diamond is the first solo show at the gallery by Mishka Henner one of the UK's most significant artists working with the photographic medium. Hosted by Carroll7Fletcher (56 - 57 Eastcastle St. London, W1W 8EQ), the exhibition brings together four distinct but interrelated series of work, based on the collection and mediation of publicly available information sourced through social media, the Internet and drones, and considers the way in which these technologies are used by the government, intelligence agencies and corporations. In the artist's recent Oil Fields and Feedlots series (2013-14), large-scale photographic prints reminiscent of vast Abstract Expressionist canvases represent landscapes carved by industries meeting extraordinary levels of consumer demand for two of North America's most prized commodities: oil and beef. Displayed on plinths filling the rear gallery space, Fifty-One US Military Outposts (2010) is a series of photographs of overt and covert military outposts used by the United States in 51 countries worldwide. Finally, the exhibition also includes new multimedia works from Henner's Scam Baiters series.

Lehmann Aviation has just launched the LA300, a new automatic drone for taking aerial images and video with the Nokia Lumia 1020. The Lehmann LA300 is a highly user-friendly unmanned aerial vehicle, which flies at a range of up to 15km, at speeds of 20-80km/h. For flight preparation and mission control the user just has to «draw» on a touchscreen tablet the area of interest, enter waypoints and Lehmann’s OperationCentre will automatically generate missions and program the drone. The drone is launched by hand and lands within a few metres of the launch site. The LA300 is priced at €4 990, ready to fly.
A new subscription service for amateur, enthusiast and semi-pro photographers has launched at PhotographyCourses.biz. Presented by by professional photographer Mike Browne, the site offers a range of easy-to-understand photography videos. Subscription costs £9.75 per month, and subscribers can tell the site owners about what topics they would like to be covered in upcoming videos.The service has launched with a library of around 30 photography clips, and a minimum of five new videos will be added each month, the company says.
