DIWA member and Slovenian website e-fotografija have reviewed the new 10 megapixel Nikon D80 DSLR camera.
“With the D80, Nikon is ahead of the pack again. But that’s just what they do. Compared to Canon, in the amateur and semi-pro class, Nikon always had cameras that were a bit more advanced than the competition. They were, of course, also more expensive. For this reason, the Nikon D80 shouldn’t be compared to the EOS 400D / Rebel XTi or the Alpha 100 and other entry-level cameras. The first clue is the larger body of the D80, offering a far better grip. This is of course true for the photographer who values grip above size. In addition to that, the Nikon D80 has a load of useful features in the menus. For this reason, I recommend the Nikon D80 to all photographers who want something more, not just a mass market entry level camera.”

DIWA member and Norwegian website Digit.no have published their review of the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“Far too often we see image quality being sacrificed for higher image resolution, mainly in terms of increased image noise. This is not the case with the EOS 400D. Despite its 10 MP resolution, it delivers image quality on par with its far more expensive sibling, the EOS 30D. However, it’s a shame that the performance of the standard zoom lens EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 II does not justify the performance of the camera. In comparison with its predecessor, the EOS 350D, all details are either identical or considerably better, at a lower price. Its performance proved to be way beyond expectations. With a SanDisk Extreme IV memory card, we shot twice as many pictures as specified by Canon, with a faster 3.2 fps speed. Amazing! Add to this a high resolution 2.5” LCD screen with eye control sensor, sensor dust removal, picture styles, improved user friendliness and lots of other goodies, and you get a camera that will be placed on top of many wishing lists for Christmas. And it deserves it!”

DigitalCameraInfo have compared the new 10 megapixel Nikon D80 (pictured), Sony A100 and Canon Digital Rebel XTi DSLR cameras.
“There are choices for the photographer who wants a combination of manual and automatic options in a 10-megapixel sub-$1000 DSLR. In this comparison review, we’re looking at the three most prominent cameras – the Sony Alpha A100, the Canon Rebel XTi and the Nikon D80. The Canon and the Sony are both available online for under $900 with a lens and both offer dust removal and reduction features. The Sony has in-camera image stabilization – Super Steady Shot technology that moves the sensor in response to camera shake. The Nikon lacks dust technology and stabilization, but goes for about $1100 with a similar lens (it’s under $1000 for the body alone). Is there a separate niche for each of these, or is one simply a better buy?”

In their latest article CameraLabs consider whether or not it’s worth upgrading to the full-frame Canon EOS 5D digital SLR for owners of the 20D and 350D / XT.
“So the question facing owners of Canon’s 10D, 20D and even 30D, along with the 300D / Rebel and 350D / XT, is what should they buy for a really significant upgrade? Since we’re probably at least six months away from an ‘EOS 40D’, the most obvious answer is of course Canon’s own EOS 5D, but this has implications beyond upgrading from, say, a 20D to the 30D. The big selling point of the Canon EOS 5D is of course its high resolution full-frame sensor, but for people who’ve only ever owned Canon EF-S mount digital SLRs, the switch will involve more than just a new body. After all if the only Canon body you’ve ever owned is a 20D, 30D, 300D / Rebel or 350D / Rebel XT, chances are you mostly own EF-S lenses designed for their physically smaller sensors. “

Does the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR (pictured) produce noisier images than its older sibling, the EOS 20D? Website Digit.no certainly seem to think so, as they have just published a whole article about it (in English).
“Does the EOS 30D deliver more image noise than the EOS 20D? I have analysed the results of all four cameras and the consice answer is: Yes. Although there are some variations between the two samples of each model, the tendency is clear: Both samples of the EOS 30D delivered more image noise than the two samples of the the EOS 20D.”

Luminous Landscape have reviewed the Leica M8 digital rangefinder camera, which has a 10 megapixel sensor, focal factor of 1.33x and an ISO range of 160-2500.
“As far as shooting speed goes, the M8 isn’t going to win any contests against most current DSLRs in terms of frame rate, but it’s no slouch. In continuous mode it can shoot raw plus JPG at 2 FPS for up to 10 frames. Using a 2GB Lexar 133X SD card it took about 23 seconds to shoot 10 frames and have them completely saved to the card. A Canon 1Ds MKII took 22 seconds to similarly take 10 shots and save them. Naturally, the Canon shots at a higher frame rate, but overall wasn’t any faster in executing the entire shoot – save to card routine.”

Photoxels have published their review of the recently announced 10 megapixel Panasonic DMC-FZ50 camera.
“Image quality is very good to excellent at ISO 100, with low noise and images retaining most of the details. At higher ISOs, images suffer from noise and loss of detail. If you like full manual control, the FZ50 is a delight to use. Manual Focus is also performed using a ring around the lens barrel with the EVF image enlarged for easy focusing. Frequently used settings can be saved. In auto focus mode, Selectable AF Area makes focusing on off-center subjects easy.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have just reviewed the new 6.1 megapixel Pentax K100D DSLR camera.
“Apart from clear and straightforward, the Pentax K100D is also quite small, even though the camera’s size has increased slightly compared to that of its predecessor. Despite the small housing, the K100D DSLR remains very comfortable to hold, as well as pleasantly sturdy. Although the viewfinder is a little on the small and dark side, it proves very decent to work with. There is no doubt that the camera has been neatly finished.”

Digital Outback Photo have started a diary-review of the Leica M8 digital rangefinder camera, which has a 10 megapixel sensor, focal factor of 1.33x and an ISO range of 160-2500.
“After reading some comments on the net we thought the noise would be more an issue with this camera. Overall the M8 can produce very sharp and detailed images. The noise levels are not like a Canon 5D but still very reasonable in our opinion. This is the first camera for many years that we really have to learn to use. Actually we only have get used to the rangefinder aspect of the M8. Over the next 2 weeks we will use the M8 as one of our main cameras. We keep you posted.”

DCViews have compared the new 10 megapixel Nikon D80 and Canon Digital Rebel XTi DSLR cameras.
“The D80 is a very responsive camera and with 40 JPEG/fine or 7 NEF (RAW) at a speed of 3 frames per second it almost equals the ’ motor drive’ of the EOS Rebel XTi. After such a burst the buffer is written to the memory card. During that time the camera is available for a single shot. All numbers and speeds mentioned heavily depend on the transfer speed of the memory card and the nature of the composition (file size of the JPEG).”

CameraLabs have published their review of the new Panasonic DMC-L1 DSLR camera.
“Panasonic’s Lumix L1 is arguably the most unique digital SLR on sale today. It may share many aspects with the Olympus E330 which provide the Live View, anti-dust system, and allow a flat upper surface, but Panasonic’s gone several steps further by adding a superb lens with optical stabilisation and equipping the L1 with a set of analogue controls which go beyond retro nostalgia to deliver genuine enhancements in usability. The L1 certainly succeeds in making the statement that Panasonic’s arrived in the DSLR market.”
