Canon EOS 400DSteves Digicams have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.

“The XTi’s self-cleaning image sensor is a first for Canon in any of its dSLRs. It eliminates or reduces the occurrence of dust on the image sensor. With other dSLRs (Olympus E-series and the Sony A100 notable exceptions), the risk of dust on the sensor occurs at every lens change; it’s not a matter of if, but when your images will have noticeable dark spots - especially noticeable at small apertures. The XTi’s self-cleaning process is invoked each time you power the camera off and on, causing an ultrasonic vibration to shake dust loose from the image sensor. I did not purposefully deposit any dust on the sensor during our testing, but did change lenses frequently in dusty conditions and found no evidence of dust in our samples.”

Olympus E-400DigiCamReview have just reviewed the Olympus E-400, the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR camera.

“Image quality is very good to excellent, the images have excellent colour, with good saturation, contrast and detail, with low noise except for high iso images. Images were slightly soft straight from the camera and could benefit from sharpening - for maximum detail and colour control RAW images should be taken. Purple fringing was very low, as was red-eye. The camera did a good job focusing even in low light thanks to the flash assist. I did not notice vignetting in photos, nor did I notice barrel or pincushion distortion. There is a very good range of image sizes, and a good choice of compression options (including RAW). Auto white balance and metering seemed to be good.”

Olympus E-400CameraLabs have just reviewed the Olympus E-400, the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR camera.

“Despite being pitched as an entry-level camera, the new Kodak 10 Megapixel sensor makes the E-400 the highest resolution Four Thirds body to date. The resolvable detail is certainly up there with rival 10 Megapixel DSLRs, although as our results show, the noise levels are more obvious especially at higher sensitivities. It is however important to look beyond the speckles, as the E-400 retains a high degree of detail which other cameras often smear-out when attempting to reduce the noise. We prefer the E-400’s approach because at least the detail’s there if you want it, and you can always apply noise reduction with third party software later if preferred.”

Olympus E-400TrustedReviews have just reviewed the Olympus E-400, the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR camera.

“It looks even smaller because it lacks the large handgrip found on most other SLR cameras. Its slim body shape is more reminiscent of an early 1980’s-vintage film SLR such as the Nikon FG or Canon A-1. It does have a handgrip of sorts; the body shape is slightly sculpted on the right hand side both front and back with a textured rubber panel on the front and on the thumbgrip, but anyone who is used to the shape of most modern SLRs will find that the E-400 feels very skinny and possibly a little awkward. Personally I quite liked the feel of it, although I did find that the position of the right-hand strap lug was too low and pressed into the side of my middle finger.”

Leica M8Leica have responded to recent negative reports from Leica M8 owners by offering a free upgrade and set of screw-on type UV/IR filters.

Leica News Release

11/24/2006 - Since delivery of the LEICA M8 started as of the end of October 2006 we have received the endorsement of many happy users. Nevertheless, in some fairly rare situations, some annoying effects may occasionally occur. Even though these artifacts neither happen often nor to everyone we want to eliminate the effects by providing the following solution.

Issues reported as “Banding” and “Mirror/Ghost images”
Our engineering teams thoroughly investigated the root causes of these effects. They have developed and tested a robust remedy - an upgrade for the M8 - to eliminate any re-occurrence. We have taken extra precautions to not only make sure that the problem does not surface again, but that this remedy will enable every M8 to meet and exceed Leica performance standards.

Nikon D40ePhotoZine have published their review of the new Nikon D40 entry level DSLR camera.

“Despite the numbering, which is more likely a spoiler for Canon’s 10D, 20D, 30D sequence, this camera is an improvement on the D50 which it is set to replace. Aggressively aimed at those not happy with response times from digital compacts and bridge cameras, as well as film shooters who want an economic route into digital and first time family snappers, the camera majors on ease of use.”

Canon EOS 400DImaging Resource have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.

“The Rebel XTi plays both catchup and leader, adding features that other cameras have added in the past 18 months, like a bigger LCD and higher resolution, but also leading in areas others have yet to catch up. In terms of a comparison to other EOS cameras, the XTi is the low-price resolution leader, and includes sensor cleaning technology that no other EOS has.”

Nikon D40CNET have published their review of the new Nikon D40 entry level DSLR camera.

“Shutter lag and autofocus speed pop up as the D40’s biggest weaknesses. It wakes up fast—0.3 second and you’re good to go. But its shutter lag in good light is an almost embarrassing (for a dSLR) 0.7 second, and it more than doubles in dim light to 1.6 seconds. I frequently missed shots because of it. The autofocus system works fine for small changes—the subject taking a step, or refocusing on something nearby—but when switching from a far subject to a near subject or vice versa, it takes a perceptibly long second or two to lock.”

Canon EOS 400DDigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.

“The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi is an update of the Rebel XT with a 10.1-megapixel sensor, a dust removal system and a 2.5-inch 230,000-pixel LCD, along with a number of other improvements. At a list price of $699.99 with an 18-55mm kit lens, or $599.99 for the body only, the Rebel XTi picks up much of the image processing architecture of current pro and prosumer Canons with the same Picture Styles system. Oddly enough, Canon’s XTi is now the cheapest DSLR from the manufacturer, but its resolution beats out the Canon EOS 30D which has 8.5 megapixels and is a wedding and portrait stalwart.”

Panasonic DMC-L1CNET have published their review of the new Panasonic DMC-L1 DSLR camera.

“If Panasonic is really serious about building digital SLRs, it’s going to have to invest heavily in effective noise reduction and start paying attention to the ergonomics of its body designs. Plus, it’d be nice of the company to realize that, while a nice kit lens is certainly welcomed, it also need to sell its bodies without a lens. If you’ve got a budget between $1,500 and $2,000 to spend on a digital SLR, you’d be much better served buying a Nikon D80, a Sony Alpha DSLR-A100K, or a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi than this Lumix. Plus, you’d still have plenty of cash left over for an extra lens or a flash unit.”

Nikon D200DIWA member Photoxels have just reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Nikon D200 digital SLR camera.

“The Nikon D200 is very responsive and gives a feeling of confidence that it can tackle any challenges the photographer may face. It is probably not really for the amateur photographer looking for a first DLSR, but it will easily be a popular backup camera for the professional photographer who already owns a Nikon DSLR and lens system. The advanced amateur photographer who is ready to upgrade his or her DSLR but could not afford (or justify) the high price of a professional-grade digital camera can now do so with the Nikon D200.”

Canon EOS 400DDIWA member LetsGoDigital have published their review of the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.

“There’s more, however. The screen on the camera’s back side has undergone a revolution. Not only is the small Canon now equipped with a large 2.5-inch LCD display, it also proves of terrific quality. In fact, it is even better than those found on the EOS 5D and the EOS 1D Mark II N; this screen is bound to spark the jealousy of many a professional DSLR owner! The value of a good monitor can simply not be underestimated, after all, you will be dealing with it all of the time. The LCD now also shows the photographic settings, which is very pleasant to work with in practice. Although we must admit we find the eye sensor a rather irksome piece of work - but to each his own! “

Nikon D40DIWA member LetsGoDigital have the first online review of the new Nikon D40 entry level DSLR camera.

“For focussing, the Nikon D40 DSLR uses the same algorithms that are also used in the D80 and D200. Together with the MultiCam 530 AF sensor with three fields, the focus works quickly and effectively, even in poor light. Unfortunately for some Nikon fans, only AF-S lenses can be used. This excludes the use of old lenses, even thought Nikon is famous for the fact their lens never change and all lenses fit on their cameras. I think it’s only a small weak point, especially as the D40 will be the first SLR for most of its users. Also because Nikon has a great range of AF-S lenses, many of which are very affordable.”

Nikon D80Thom Hogan has just reviewed the new 10 megapixel Nikon D80 DSLR camera.

“In short, the D80 is producing very consistent results across the spectrum of ISO values that users normally would set (100 to 1600). Indeed, I can’t really find any tangible difference from 100 to 400, and at 800 the results are still so good you have to look hard to see the small differences. The performance is so good that I can recommend some users leave Auto ISO set with a max of 400 or 800, depending upon your tolerance to low level changes.”

Canon EOS 400DePhotoZine have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.

“So how do you improve on a class-leading camera? Owners of Canon’s EOS 350D camera may well be wondering if the extra pixels, larger screen, improved autofocus and anti-dust measures will make an upgrade worthwhile. The jump from eight to 10 megapixels doesn’t make a great difference to image quality and although the other improvements are welcome, it may not be time to dust off your credit card and start checking how much 350Ds go for on eBay just yet.”

Nikon D40The Nikon D40 DSLR is finally here after a number of high-profile leaks and reports by some of the leading photography websites. We’ve resisted the urge to break any embargoes, instead preferring to bring you news of the D40 in full, along with some exclusive product shots from yesterday’s UK press launch in central London. The Nikon D40 is small, light and undeniably cheap at just £449.99/ €679.99 with the new 18-55mm kit lens (it won’t be sold as body-only), but after trying it out, the D40 importantly still retains the usual high Nikon build-quality. The new Nikon D40 will be available from 1st December 2006.

Nikon UK Press Release

Nikon UK is pleased to announce the D40, a new interchangeable-lens digital SLR that combines brilliant performance with the practicality of a remarkably small and light camera body. The Nikon D40 boasts handling and performance advantages that eliminate the frustrations often associated with compact digital cameras.  The careful design of the D40 allows users to take breathtaking pictures without the need to “learn” photography. The Nikon D40 features a high-resolution 6.1-effective-megapixel Nikon DX Format CCD image sensor and a highly advanced Nikon Image Processing Engine. These combine to produce exceptional image detail with true, vivid colours. Nikon’s exclusive 3D Colour Matrix Metering II assures accurate exposure control even in difficult lighting conditions. Using its 420-pixel sensor, the Nikon D40 instantly assesses and compares the brightness, contrast and colour of each scene to set the accurate exposure. Spot metering, centre-weighted metering and exposure compensation are also available for those wanting more control. The Nikon D40 comes kitted with the new 3x 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens assuring superb picture sharpness and optimum contrast, along with the versatility of a wide-angle to medium telephoto lens.

Panasonic DMC-L1DigitalCameraInfo have published their review of the new Panasonic DMC-L1 DSLR camera.

“Panasonic and Leica have a close relationship – many lenses on compact Panasonic cameras are branded Leica, even though Panasonic builds them. The L1’s seemingly-familiar styling furthers that parallel and assumes a form that will be immediately recognizable to Leica fans. Add a kit lens that is at least a full f-stop faster than competitors’ standard lenses and Panasonic enters the DSLR market with a distinct and competitive package. “

“Besides its great leap forward in image quality, the Rebel XTi gains enough additional capability (much of it from Canon’s EOS 30D) that it strains the term “entry-level.” It’s now more of a high-end camera in a bargain body. So it makes sense to compare this upstart both to the Nikon D80 and Canon’s own 30D, an 8MP camera currently selling for $350 more than the Rebel XTi.”

Canon EOS 30DMegapixel.net have just reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.

“Moreover, with the inclusion of a shutter mechanism rated to 100,000 duty cycles, the 30D is even more intended as workhorse than the 20D was. Clearly, the EOS 30D has to be seen as an alternative for professional users that are reluctant to invest more than double the price of a 30D into a Pro designated body, that is, regardless of anything else, still part of an evolving technology. Now, as to whether any of these improvements make it worthwile for a 20D owner to upgrade to the 30D — we’ll admit to being sceptical.”
