Photographs of some of the biggest names in 20th century English literature by Mark Gerson, are for auction at Bonhams. In a career that spanned 40 years Gerson photographed all the great names in British literature including William Golding, Walter de la Mare, Roald Dahl, John Osborne, and Salman Rushdie. Photographs of all these figures are in the sale together with one of the American writer James Baldwin (above). The photographs are all signed by Mark Gerson and are priced variously at between £400 and 1,500. The auctioneer’s Books, Maps and Manuscripts sale will be held in London on 23 November.

The Levi’s Photo Workshop kicks off a week-long celebration of sports through the lens of photography on Sunday. The We Are All Fanatics exhibition will open at 11am on Sunday. In a tribute to the world of sports photography, the Levi’s Photo Workshop will transform itself into a super fan fantasy world, with an opportunity to learn about the fine art of sports photography from the Workshop staff. The exhibition itself, running from 7-13th November, will feature photographs by renowned photographers Naomi Harris and Richard Kern. Entry is free. Sixtyone North founder Dave Taylor has just announced a new photo tour to the heart of the Alaskan wilderness. The tour, titled “Aurora Borealis, Winter Landscapes & Wildlife” will kick off on 26 March 2011 and end on the 31st. Participants will be staying in a lodge deep in the wilderness of Alaska, just south of the Alaska Range. As the name of the tour suggests, the northern lights will be the main focus of the tour, in addition to landscapes and Alaskan wildlife. The cost per participant is $2250; which covers 5 nights of accommodation in the lodge, meals and transportation while on tour, and tuition. Transportation to Anchorage is not included. The first $1150 is payable upon registration, while the remaining $1100 is due on 1 February 2011.

Red Bull has announced the biggest Red Bull Reporter assignment of the year. During the Red Bull BC One event in Tokyo, sixteen of the best break dancers from across the globe will compete across a number of heats to be crowned ‘The One’. Red Bull is looking for a talented, outgoing and adventurous photographer “to capture the magic of this unique event”. Interested readers should submit their best photography by no later than 12pm on Friday 5th November and tag it with ‘Red Bull BC One’. Entry is open to all UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man residents aged 16 up to 26 years old. As this assignment is overseas, you must ensure that you have a valid passport and that you’re free from Wednesday 24th November – Sunday 28th November.

Tonight at 7pm GMT, Scottish landscape photographer Colin Prior will present images from his new book, High Light, in the Apple Store at 1-7 The Piazza, London. Spending the last five years in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, Prior has captured the transient nature of the landscape, often camping on mountain summits to shoot at dusk and dawn. Held on location around The Flash Centre in London and Birmingham, the course is suitable from beginners to more advanced photographers who want to control and sculpt light the way a professional does. East Central Gallery is going to host the first London solo exhibition by photographer David Adika. Titled “Oululu”, the exhibition opens to the public on 20th November, and runs until 23rd December. Oululu will present some twenty photographs and two prints, which will be displayed in the different rooms of the gallery as a complex installation by the artist. The images vary in sizes and will either standalone or be grouped, on pastel coloured walls. East Central Gallery is located at 23 Bateman’s Row, London EC2A 3HH.

Steve Davey and Better Travel Photography are launching two new travel photography tours for 2011. Impressions of Laos & Cambodia departs from Bangkok, Thailand, on 6 April 2011, and explores two of the most photogenic countries in South East Asia over 15 days. Top destinations include Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and Angkor Wat. Impressions of Ladakh starts in Delhi, India, on 25 July, before flying up to Leh the high-altitude capital of Ladakh. Participants will visit an eclectic mix of fertile valleys, mountains and ancient monasteries, as well as the remote Tso Moriri Lake and the atmospheric town of Manali.
