Photo-i have reviewed the the Fujifilm FinePix S6500fd (also known as the S6000fd), a 6 megapixel digital camera with a 10.7x zoom lens equivalent to 28-300mm.
“The built-in motordrive offers an impressive 3 frames per second, which should be sufficient for most hobbyists needs. I also liked the exposure bracketing feature whereby the camera shoots three frames - the “correct” exposure and then one shot either side for under and over exposure. The values can be custom set in 1/3 stop increments. On exposure issues, I found the camera had a tendency towards overexposing pictures by about 1/2 stop. I used an exposure compensation of -2/3 for most of my test pictures.”

Some of them aren’t particularly bad but they add up to a less than satisfying image quality. The Z710 is far from the worst camera I’ve tested but I think that people buying it for the Kodak name would expect more.”

“Image quality is better than the RR660. You might remember that I said the RR660 was “OK for the money” and so is the RR730. It’s actually a little better than the 660. Yellows are much more accurate and purple fringing may have been improved. In a minute I’m going to say bad things about image quality but keep this in mind - go on holiday and take snaps in decent light then print them to 6X4 and the RR730 will give you great results. To my mind it is perfect for the target market - first time users who capture memories rather than photographers looking to squeeze the final drop of quality out of their camera.”

“Shutter lag and autofocus speed pop up as the D40’s biggest weaknesses. It wakes up fast—0.3 second and you’re good to go. But its shutter lag in good light is an almost embarrassing (for a dSLR) 0.7 second, and it more than doubles in dim light to 1.6 seconds. I frequently missed shots because of it. The autofocus system works fine for small changes—the subject taking a step, or refocusing on something nearby—but when switching from a far subject to a near subject or vice versa, it takes a perceptibly long second or two to lock.”

Even at ISO 100, images were fuzzy and mottled with color. And, though the most prominent, noise wasn’t the only issue; the lens produced distinct chromatic aberration (purple fringing along high-contrast edges) and notable barrel distortion, resulting in images that ballooned out when shot at the wide end of the lens.”

“It seems to me that if you can’t find a Canon that matches your requirements, you just haven’t looked very carefully. The Canon lineup is so rich with options it’s often hard to tell one model from another. The Canon A630 might, for example, be easily confused with the A640, except it has an 8.0-megapixel sensor and doesn’t support remote capture. Neither of which strike me as a problem. Especially when the savings amounts to $100.”

The company also announced that it has developed a new mobile technology, which it is calling, “i-Lens”, for integrating the entire panel assembly, including a protective layer, into a single, thinner module that is more shock-resistant and easier to read than conventional panels. “The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi is an update of the Rebel XT with a 10.1-megapixel sensor, a dust removal system and a 2.5-inch 230,000-pixel LCD, along with a number of other improvements. At a list price of $699.99 with an 18-55mm kit lens, or $599.99 for the body only, the Rebel XTi picks up much of the image processing architecture of current pro and prosumer Canons with the same Picture Styles system. Oddly enough, Canon’s XTi is now the cheapest DSLR from the manufacturer, but its resolution beats out the Canon EOS 30D which has 8.5 megapixels and is a wedding and portrait stalwart.”

“Compression artifacts and noise are the DSC-N2’s biggest weaknesses. The camera’s aggressive JPEG compression that gave nearly all of our images a mottled, feltlike texture that softened and distorted fine details. This problem magnified when shooting at greater than ISO 400, when noise made already fuzzy pictures look like a television screen. Lens distortion was minimal, but we noticed significant chromatic abberations (colored fringes) along high-contrast edges. The N2’s colors were slightly warm and, like most cameras, its automatic white balance produced a yellow pallor under incandescent light.”
