Canon have announced that their interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLRs and CSCs) have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 14 consecutive years from 2003 to 2016. In 2003, Canon introduced their breakthrough EOS 300D DSLR camera, which was competitively priced and quickly captured the top share of the global market. Canon has continued to launch a range of interchangeable-lens cameras including the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series which paved the way for digital SLR video recording. During 2016, Canon released the EOS 80D for advanced amateur users, the EOS-1D X Mark II for professionals, and the 4K-enabled EOS 5D Mark IV (pictured) for video enthusiasts. Additionally, the company’s interchangeable-lens camera lineup was further expanded with the introduction of the high-end EOS M5 compact-system camera in November. This year, the company launched the Canon EOS M6, EOS 77D and EOS 800D models.

LPA Design has announced a major update to its ControlTL formware for the PocketWizard MiniTT1, FlexTT5, PowerMC2 and PowerST4 devices and minor updates for the Plus III and MultiMAX radios. The new ControlTL firmware, available as a free download using the Pocket Wizard Utility, provides compatibility with several new Canon and Nikon cameras, greatly improves the performance of PocketWizard’s exclusive HyperSync feature and resolves bugs in previous versions. The new firmware for the Plus III resolves some minor bugs. The MultiMAX firmware, which has been available for a while in beta, adds two new features. Do note that PocketWizard Utility version 1.54 or newer is required before installing these updates.
Canon has unveiled the Canon EOS 100D (sold as the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 in North America), which is billed as “the smallest and lightest APS-C DSLR ever made.” Measuring just 116.8 x 90.7 x 69.4mm and weighing only 407g, the EOS 100D features a 3” ClearView II capacitive touchscreen, an 18-megapixel Hybrid CMOS AF II sensor and DIGIC 5 processor. The new sensor uses phase detection pixels spread across 80% of the sensor’s imaging surface to provide increased AF speed and tracking performance when the camera is in live view or when capturing Full-HD movies. The Canon EOS 100D is available from late April, with an SRP of £579.99 / €739.99 / $649.99.
The Canon EOS 700D (marketed as the Canon EOS Rebel T5i in North America) is a new digital SLR camera with an APS-C sized 18-megapixel Hybrid CMOS sensor, DIGIC 5 processor and a 5fps continuous shooting mode. The EOS 700D’s advanced AF module consists of 9 cross-type sensors spread across the frame, and a new, simplified 360° rotating mode dial to provide easy and swift access to the camera’s various shooting modes. A 3” vari-angle Clear View LCD II touchscreen makes it easy for users to frame, shoot and review from a variety of angles. When shooting in Live View mode, the Hybrid CMOS AF system enables speedy and accurate autofocus for photos and video, the company claims. Iridient Digital has released Iridient Developer 2.0 for Mac OS X. This update brings a name change, dropping the “RAW” from RAW Developer, along with support for non-raw images, including most standard image formats (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, etc) as well as OpenEXR and Radiance HDR image formats. Other major new features include a redesigned image preview window with an all-new image thumbnail browser optimised for Retina screens; an all-new lens correction module with support for lens profiles, chromatic aberration and distortion correction; support for 39 new camera models, star ratings metadata and EXIF 2.3 information. This release is a paid upgrade for users who originally purchased a licence prior to 16 September 2011. Canon is showcasing its EOS-1D X professional DSLR camera and Pixma Pro-1 photo inkjet printer at Photo Plus Expo in New York City. The Canon EOS-1D X features a 18-megapixel full-frame sensor, 61-point AF system, three DIGIC processors and continuous shooting speeds of up to 14 frames per second. The Pixma Pro-1 Professional Photo Inkjet printer boasts a newly developed 12-ink system, five of which are monochrome, along with a new FINE Print Head which helps deliver consistent results. Canon U.S.A. has launched the Canon EOS Rebel T3 + EF 18-55 IS II Lens Kit in three new colour variations - red, brown and metallic grey, in addition to the standard black version. Available exclusively at the Canon Online Store, the new kits are priced at $599.99, but an $50 instant rebate lowers the price to $549.99.

The 18-megapixel Canon EOS 60D is a replacement for the 50D featuring a vari-angle LCD screen and Full HD video capture with full manual control including a variety of user-selectable frame rates. The Canon 60D can shoot 18-megapixel stills at up to 5.3 frames per second for up to 58 frames in a row (in JPEG format). Boasting a 9-point, all cross-type autofocus AF system, the EOS 60D also features Canon’s iFCL metering system, first introduced with the EOS 7D, with a 63-zone Dual-Layer sensor. An Integrated Speedlite Transmitter provides in-camera control of multiple EX flash units for more creative lighting. The new 3-inch LCD monitor has a 3:2 aspect ratio, a 1,040k dot resolution and full articulation for overhead shots or ground-level photography. Adobe today released final versions of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.7, Adobe Camera Raw 5.7 and Adobe DNG Converter 5.7. The updates add raw file support for nine new cameras and digital backs, including the Canon EOS 550D, Kodak Z981, Leaf Aptus-II 8, Leaf Aptus-II 10R, Mamiya DM40, Olympus E-PL1, Panasonic G2, Panasonic G10 and Sony A450. Lightroom 2.7 is available as a free download for Lightroom 2 customers, and Photoshop Camera Raw 5.7 is available as a free download for Photoshop CS4, Photoshop Elements 8 and Premiere Elements 8 customers. The DNG Converter 5.7 is also available as a free download for all.

Canon’s advanced DIGIC 4 image processor and 18MP sensor support standard ISO settings of 100 – 6400 (expandable to 12800), while enhanced in-camera noise reduction technology boosts performance in low light conditions. The system’s 14-bit image processing produces smooth tonal gradation and natural looking colours for high quality prints and on-screen display. Redrock Microsystems have announced the Redrock Micro DSLR 2.0 line of cinema accessories for video-enabled DSLRs and the Panasonic Lumix GH1. Redrock Micro DSLR 2.0 delivers cinema support & accessories for hybrid still and cinema shooting with DSLRs, which, on their own, are not stable enough nor provide the features for cinema-style production. Canon have just unveiled the 15.1-megapixel Canon EOS EOS 500D / Rebel T1i digital SLR. The new camera is the first Rebel to feature HD video capture - 720p at 30fps as well as Full HD 1080p at 20fps. Other highlights include a Digic 4 image processor, 14-bit analog-to-digital conversion, a three-inch, 920,000-dot rear screen, Auto Lighting Optimiser, Creative Auto Mode and Live View. Continuous shooting is available at 3.4 frames per second, for up to 170 JPEG or 9 raw images when using a class 6 or higher SD or SDHC memory card. The Canon EOS 500D / Rebel T1i provides ISO speeds from ISO 100 up to ISO 3200 in whole stop increments, along with two additional high-speed ISO settings – H1: 6400 and H2: 12800. Live View comes in three flavours, Quick, Live and Face Detection Live. To combat any dust particles that may have settled on its 15.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, the Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit for the Canon EOS Rebel T1i / EOS 500D has been upgraded with a fluorine coating on the low-pass filter for better dust resistance.
The Canon EOS Rebel T1i / EOS 500D digital SLR is scheduled for delivery in May, at an estimated body-only price of $799.99. Canon USA have announced the Canon EOS Rebel XS, which was first unveiled in other markets last month as the EOS 1000D. “We are proud to introduce the new EOS Rebel XS camera at a very exciting time in digital imaging. As consumers have fully embraced digital photography, with many consumers purchasing their second or third digital camera models, we see the Rebel XS as the bridge to help photographers cross over from the world of point-and-shoot cameras to digital SLR technology,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. Expected to ship in August 2008, the black or silver Canon Rebel XS camera is only available in a zoom lens kit version, which includes the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens. DxO Optics Pro v5.1 is now available for both Windows and Mac platforms. Version 5.1 offers considerable improvements in stability and extra features, including a more flexible Pace Interlok protection that doesn’t require installation of an Interlok driver. The much rumoured Canon 40D digital SLR camera is finally officially here, with a 10.1 megapixel sensor, 6.5 fps continuous shooting and 3 inch LCD screen. The 40D also features an upgraded dust and weather resistant construction, ISO 3200 mode and DIGIC III processor. “This newest member of Canon’s Digital SLR family takes mid-range Digital SLRs to exciting new heights with enhanced resolution and image quality, faster shooting and processing speeds and better overall functionality than ever before,” stated Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. The Canon 40D will be available in September in a body-only configuration for $1,299. A kit version with the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens will cost $1,499. Canon have also announced the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. This adds image stabilization which provides up to a full four stops of correction, and replaces the original 18-55mm lens. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS will cost $199.99 in October.
Canon have announced their 6th straight year of record earnings, posting a profit 384.1 billion yen ($3.3 billion; euro2.7 billion) for 2005 on the back of strong digital camera sales and cost-cutting. ABCNews also reports that Canon is set to expand its business into flat-panel TVs, in partnership with Toshiba, using a new technology called SEDs, or surface-conduction electron-emitter displays.

Feb. 1, 2005 America has spoken, and it has chosen Canon as the leading brand for digital cameras in 2004, according to recently released retail sales data from The NPD Group, one of the leading providers of retail market information.
The NPD Group reports that the Canon brand captured the number one position in Total Digital Camera Sales in 2004, with a market share of 20.4 percent, based on unit sales of both compact cameras and digital SLR cameras combined*. In addition, Canon was the number one brand in both NPD’s Digital Point-and-Shoot and Digital SLR categories, with market shares of 18.6 percent and 62.8 percent, respectively.

The camera can fire off up to 3fps in One Shot AF mode and Flash metering is upgraded to Canon?s new distance linked E-TTL II system. The camera will sell as body only, or as a kit with the new Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 III, which is compatible with the E-TTL II flash metering.
Shutter speed is increased and now extends from 30 sec to 1/4000 sec, with flash synchronisation at 1/125 sec. AF points can be manually selected with new ergonomic cross keys, which fall under the fingers for intuitive, one hand operation. The more compact body has an improved ergonomic design and features a luxuriant dark metallic finish and a rubber skin on the grip. A large 30 x 30 mm illuminated LCD shows all key camera controls at a glance, while the durable body features a rugged metal lens mount. Extremely quiet shutter release and motor wind makes the camera suited for shooting in situations where discretion is required.
