The winners of the 3rd International Landscape Photographer of the Year (ILPOTY) competition have been announced. From 2394 entries, the winner of the third International Landscape Photographer of the Year (based on a folio submission of at least 4 images) is Alex Noriega from the USA, while the winner of the third International Landscape Photograph of the Year (awarded for a single image) is a picture by Hougaard Malan, from South Africa (reprinted above), who also won the Waterfall Award. Runners-up include Kath Salier, Peter Poppe, Simone Cmoon and Eberhard Ehmke. The Black & White Award went to Guy Havell, the Dominant Sky category was won by Leonardo Papèra, the South America Award was given to Kalan Robb, while the Squarial (square aerial) Award was won by Ignacio Palacios.
Tamron has announced the recommended retail price of its new SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD telephoto lens. Introduced in February, the Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD is the World's first image-stabilised 85mm f/1.8 lens for SLR cameras. Using LD (Low Dispersion) and XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) glass elements, the new lens is constructed with Tamron’s new SP design, incorporating a new look and feel which includes larger and more tactile switches, together with Tamron’s Moisture-Resistant Construction. VC (Vibration Compensation) is also included in the lens design to help reduce camera shake making it easy to take handheld photographs in low light. USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) focusing is also a key part in delivering sharp and precise focus every time, with full-time manual override for extra creative control. These updates add full or preliminary support for fifteen new cameras and digital backs including the Canon PowerShot S120, the Fujifilm XQ1 and X-E2, the Nikon 1 AW1, D5300, D610 and Coolpix P7800, the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and Stylus 1, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM1, the Phase One IQ260 and IQ280, the Sony A7, A7R and RX10. Additionally, they contain new profiles for one Canon, four Nikon, one Sigma and two Sony lenses.

Brian Griffith has released Iridient Developer 2.3, an update to his photo editing software for Mac OS X. This release includes support for the Sony NEX-5T and ILCE-3000, the Samsung Galaxy NX, the Olympus OM-D E-M1, the Nikon Coolpix P7800, the Fujifilm: X-A1, the Canon PowerShot G16 and the PowerShot S120. The automatic chromatic aberration correction algorithm has also been greatly improved to give better, more consistent results under difficult image conditions. This release is a paid upgrade for users who originally purchased a license prior to 1 April 2012.

DxO Labs have released an update to DxO Optics Pro, adding support for raw files generated by the Canon EOS-1D X and the new Nikon D600 (pictured), as well as for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5 and DMC-LX7. Furthermore, almost 400 new camera/lens combinations have been added to the library of DxO optics modules, thereby providing support for additional Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, and Zeiss lenses for Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, and Sony cameras. Adobe has posted updates to Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), DNG Converter and Lightroom, including preliminary support for the Nikon D600 digital SLR camera (pictured), allowing you to play with the raw files provided in our Nikon D600 review. The updates also add support for 21 other cameras ranging from the Canon EOS 650D / Rebel T4i to the Sony DSC-RX100 and profiles for over 40 Canon, Carl Zeiss, Hasselblad, Leica, Nikon, Pentax, Sigma and Tamron lenses. The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.2 and Adobe Camera Raw 7.2 updates additionally incorporate a number of bug fixes.

Phase One today released Version 1.1 of Media Pro. a professional digital visual assets managing application for Mac and Windows. This update fixes a number of bugs, features faster importing / media rendering and improved Capture One integration, and adds support for a number of camera raw formats when using the Capture One renderer. Media Pro is available now via download for $199 / €139 through Phase One’s Online Store.
DxO Labs have launched DxO Optics Pro 6.2 for Windows and Mac, which supports Canon 550D and Sony Alpha DSLR-A450 in both its Standard and Elite editions, and the Canon 1D Mark IV and Nikon D3s in its Elite edition. This new release brings the total number of available DxO Optics Modules to over 1900. DxO Optics Pro 6.1.2 for Windows is available from both DxO Labs’ e-store and selected resellers priced at $169 / €149 / £99 (Standard Edition) and $299 / €299 / £199 (Elite Edition). DxO Optics Pro 6 for Mac is scheduled for release in May 2010 and will be available as a free upgrade to customers who have purchased version 5 or higher after June 1, 2009.

Capture One 4.6 is a new release with improved performance and additional camera support. Processing, Browsing, Folder viewing and Color Editor have all been improved, and the new Camera Controls tool allows users to remotely control key camera settings. New supported cameras include the Phase One P 65+, Canon G10, Nikon D3X and Olympus E-30. Capture One 4.6 is a free service release to existing Capture One 4.x owners.
DxO Optics Pro 5.3.1 adds support for the new Canon EOS 50D and Nikon D90 DSLR cameras. In addition, a 33% discount is available on all DxO Optics Pro editions and upgrades until December 31st 2008, up to 90 € in savings. LightZone 3.6 adds RAW support for 13 more cameras. New models include the Canon 1000D, Nikon D700, Olympus E-420 and Olympus E-520. The Full version of LightZone is priced at $199.95, and the Basic version $129.95. Light Crafts have also joined the QuarkAlliance Partner Program.
DxO Optics Pro v5.1 is now available for both Windows and Mac platforms. Version 5.1 offers considerable improvements in stability and extra features, including a more flexible Pace Interlok protection that doesn’t require installation of an Interlok driver. DxO Optics 5.1 also now supports 3 new cameras and 35 new DxO Modules, including the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi/450D and Nikon D60. The latest version of Phase One’s RAW processing software, Capture One 4.1, is now available. Two lens correction features, tethered shooting and a Hot Folder feature have also been added. Capture One 4.1 is a free upgrade for licensed users of 4.x. Price for new users is 129 USD / 99 EUR. Capture One 4 PRO is expected later this year.
Bibble Pro 4.10 adds support for eight of the newest digital SLR cameras and 14 new lenses. Version 4.10 adds support for: Nikon D60, Canon Digital Rebel XSi (450D), Sony a200, a300, and a350, Pentax K20D and K200D, and Olympus E-420. Version 4.10 is the last planned update to Bibble Lite and Bibble Pro before the launch of Bibble 5. Bibble 4.10 is available in both “Pro” ($129.95) and “Lite” ($69.95) versions for Windows, Macintosh (PPC/Intel as a Universal Binary) and Linux.
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.4 and Camera Raw 4.4 are now available immediately as free upgrades for existing users. This update adds raw file support for nine additional digital cameras, including the Canon EOS 450D, Nikon D60 Pentax K20D and Sony A350, and updated printer driver compatibility for Apple Leopard Mac OS X 10.5.
Phase One have released a Beta version of its Capture One 4 RAW workflow software. New features in Capture One 4 include High Dynamic Range, Variants, Web contact sheet and Multiple up viewing. The first look at Capture One 4 is available now at no cost until November 1st.
Adobe have released Camera Raw 3.7 for both Windows and Mac platforms. Support for the Nikon D40 and Pentax K10D DSLR cameras has been added in this update.

The Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer provides the ability to view, organize, and print photos captured in RAW image formats from supported Canon and Nikon digital cameras.
The updated version of the software adds support for the Canon EOS 5D, Nikon D50, and other recent camera models from Canon and Nikon (see list of new supported camera models below). In addition, a new Save As button has been added to the toolbar, allowing users to conveniently save either an embedded preview or processed RAW image to disk as a JPEG or TIFF file.

Epson have released a new firmware update for thier P-2000 Multimedia Storage Viewer, which I enthusiastically reviewed earlier this week.
The firmware provides the following enhancements:

Canon USA have released a new version of Digital Photo Professional, Canon’s software application for editing and converting RAW images shot by EOS Digital cameras.

(1-1) The Copy Stamp Tool (to adjust images by copying and pasting some part of the image) was added.
(1-2) The Rename Tool (to change multiple file names at once) was added.
(1-3) Lines appeared in the bottom of images converted from RAW images taken with certain models when using Digital Photo Professional 1.5.0/1.6.0 on a computer with dual processors or Hyper-Threading Technology. This problem has now been fixed.
(1-4) Support was added for the EOS D60 and EOS Kiss Digital N / EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT / EOS 350D DIGITAL.

Digital Outback Photo have taken a look at a new feature for the Nikon D70 and D2H digital SLRs called “Dust Off” (part of the Nikon Capture software), which promises to quickly remove those irritating dust spots from your photos.
“Dust spots are a fact of the life of digital photographers using DSLRs with interchangeable lenses (only the Canon D30, D60, 10D and 300D seem to be less prone. We have the feeling that this maybe more luck than design because the Canon 1D and 1Ds show more dust).
Now Nikon came up with a neat idea to implement a feature in their D70 and D2h that allows to photograph a “dust map” photo and should help to reduce/remove dust from existing raw files.”

Version 1.2 of Capture One DSLR LE has just been released by PhaseOne. A 15-day trial version of this RAW conversion software, which supports the Canon 10D, D30, D60 and Nikon D100 cameras, is available to download. I’ve been using it for the past few days and am pretty impressed so far - it’s a marked improvement on Canon’s own RAW conversion software, the slow and cumbersome File Viewer Utility, and at $99 Capture One DSLR LE won’t break the bank.

Outback Photo have reviewed Capture One DSLR (Limited Edition), a RAW file converter from Phase One that competes with the likes of third-partly applications Adobe Raw and BreezeBrowser. Capture One DSLR (Limited Edition) is a $99 cut-down version of the $500 full program, with support for the Canon D30/D60/10D and the Nikon D100.
“We find this is the best solution for the Canon 10D right now on the market (keep in mind that Adobe’s Camera Raw has no official support for the 10D yet).”
I’m still learning to use Canon’s File Viewer Utility, which according to popular opinion is not very good, but as I’ve already paid for it, I’ll give it a fair crack of the whip…

With the recently announced demise of the Canon D60, photographers looking for an affordable digital SLR currently have the choice of the Nikon D100, Fuji S2 and the Sigma SD9. The latter camera has been receiving a lot of attention recently due to it’s innovative use of the Foveon X3 CMOS sensor, which promises to deliver ‘twice the sharpness, better colour detail and greater resistance to unpredictable colour artifacts’.
The UK-based website ePhotoZine has reviewed Sigma’s first digital camera, which currently retails for ?1299 at Jessops.

“Despite the negative issues we found with the SD9, Sigma have done a great job with their first Digital SLR. In some ways, this is a groundbreaking camera that puts many cameras to shame. Yet at the same time it can be embarrassed by its inadequacies in other important areas.
Taking into account the competitive price of the SD9, its good handling and specification and the generally very high standard of image quality, we’d certainly recommend it. However, do bear in mind the limitations with the ISO and shutter speed ranges. Also consider the workflow the SD9 forces you into by only using RAW files and whether you are prepared to add that extra amount of work into your photographic experience.”
From a personal point of view, I’ve probably discounted the Sigma as a potential DSLR (despite it’s very competive price), mainly because all of my current Canon kit and lenses would be incompatible with the Sigma. I’d rather wait to see what Canon announce as the replacement(s) for the D60. But if you don’t currently have a large investment in a film SLR then I think the Sigma is well worth a good, long look at.
