Like the award-winning XZ-1 before it, the new Olympus STYLUS XZ-2 brings startling quality imaging to the pocket-sized camera category with the class-brightest lens right across the zoom range. Another bonus for seasoned photographers is the fast-response autofocus that you activate with a simple tap on the 920,000-dot, 3-inch hypercrystal LCD. The Olympus XZ-2 will be available from late October 2012 for £479.99

Canon has announced three new Wi-Fi enabled, 12-megapixel PowerShot models, including the Canon G15 with a 28-140mm (eq.) f/1.8-2.8 zoom, the PowerShot S110 with a 24-120mm (eq.) f/2-5.9 lens and the PowerShot SX50 HS with 50x optical zoom. Successor to the critically acclaimed G12, the Canon PowerShot G15 comes with a considerably faster lens, higher-resolution (albeit non-articulated) rear screen, faster AF system and continuous capture of up to 10fps at full resolution. Like the G15, the Canon S110 also features a fairly big (for a compact) 1/1.7-type sensor, improved focusing speeds and 10fps burst shooting, complemented by a Touch Shutter feature courtesy of its 3-inch capacitive touchscreen. The Canon SX50 HS comes with a much smaller, 1/2.33-type sensor but offers an incredible 50x zoom lens (24-1200mm equivalent). Like the other two models, the PowerShot SX50 HS benefits from improved focusing times and offers high-speed continuous shooting at up to 10fps. The Canon PowerShot G15, PowerShot S110 and PowerShot SX50 HS are expected to be available in October for estimated retail prices of $499.99, $449.99 and $479.99, respectively.

The Fujifilm XF1 is a 12-megapixel premimum compact with a 2/3-type sensor and a 25-100mm (eq.) f/1.8-4.9 lens with Optical Image Stabilisation. The camera’s EXR-CMOS sensor features Fujifilm’s three switchable sensor modes (SN - high ISO and low noise, DR - dynamic-range priority, and HR - resolution priority) which can be selected according to the subject. The quick read time of the CMOS sensor, coupled with the high-speed EXR processor, accelerates all operations - start-up in 0.55 seconds, focus acquisition in as little as 0.16 seconds, and minimum shot-to-shot time of 0.8 seconds. The Fujifilm XF1’s slim-line lens is constructed of 7 lens elements in 6 groups (four aspherical and three extra low dispersion), the first with a highly variable profile and a high refractive index, and the second an aspherical element with an extremely high refractive index. The Fujifilm XF1 will cost £399.00 in the UK. The Black version is exclusive to Jessops for two weeks from October 18th. All the versions are then generally released from Oct 29th with the Black and Tan versions available through the Fujifilm retail network, while the Red version will be exclusive to Dixons.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 is the world’s first compact camera with a 35mm full-frame sensor. Featuring an Exmor CMOS sensor with 24.3 effective megapixels, the Sony RX1 has a Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm F2 prime lens, ISO range from ISO 100-25600, 5fps burst shooting, 14-bit RAW, and Full HD movies at 50p/60p or 25p/24p. The Sony DSC-RX1 will be available in December 2012 for around £2600 / $2800.

Sony have launched no less than 10 new digital imaging products today, including three 35mm full-frame cameras. They are the:

- NEX-6, A99, DSC-RX1 cameras
- NEX-VG900, NEX-VG30 camcorders
- 10-18mm, 16-50mm Power Zoom, 35mm f1.8 (all E-mount), 300mm f2.8, Planar T 50mm F1.4 ZA SSM full-frame lenses

We sat down with SH Lim, Vice President, Samsung Digital Imaging, HQ, at the IFA show in Berlin to discuss the new Samsung Galaxy Camera and Samsung imaging products in general.

Sigma Corporation of America has announced availability and pricing for the 15.3x3-megapixel Sigma DP1 Merrill large-sensor compact camera. Going on sale in mid-September at an estimated street price of $999, the raw-capable Sigma DP1 Merrill boasts a totally redesigned 19mm (28mm eq.) f/2,8 lens with moulded-glass aspherical elements, “F” Low Dispersion and Super Multi Layer coating, and a telecentric optical design.

The Samsung Galaxy Camera is a sixteen-megapixel superzoom camera with a 4.8” high-definition capacitive touchscreen, 21x optical zoom, optical image stabilisation, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system with Wi-Fi and 3G/4G connectivity. The 4.1-86.1mm f/2.8-5.9 lens offers an angle-of-view range equivalent to that of an imaginary 23-483mm lens on a 35mm camera body. In addition to taking 16-megapixel stills, the Samsung Galaxy Camera can also record Full HD movies as well as slow-motion video at up to 120 frames per second. The remote viewfinder feature allows you to see what the camera sees on the display of your smartphone and take a picture from a distance - useful for shooting timid wildlife, for instance. The Samsung Galaxy Camera even offers voice control - you can command the camera to zoom in, zoom out and take a shot without touching it.

Rollei has expanded its Powerflex series with three new digital cameras offering 5x, 8x and 36x optical zoom. The range-topping Rollei Powerflex 360 (€369.99, pictured) has a 22.5-810mm equivalent lens, 18-megapixel Sony 1/2.3” sensor and 3.0-inch TFT LCD screen. The Rollei Powerflex 550 Full HD (€129.99) comes with a 14-megapixel CMOS imager, 5x optical zoom and a 2.7” display, while the Powerflex 700 (€149.99) is equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor, 3-inch screen and 1 gigabyte of internal memory. All three cameras can shoot Full HD video at 30fps, with some models offering 60-, 120- and even 240-frame-per-second shooting at reduced resolutions.

The Pentax X-5 is a digital bridge camera with a 26x optical zoom lens. Offering focal-length coverage from 22.3mm ultra-wide angle to 580mm super telephoto, the Pentax X5 also features a 16 megapixel BSI sensor, 3-inch tilting LCD screen, electronic viewfinder, full 1080p HD video, and 10fps burst shooting. Price and availability of the Pentax X-5 are to be confirmed.

The Olympus SP-820UZ is an AA battery powered digital ultra-zoom camera with a 14-megapixel CMOS sensor and 40x optical zoom starting at 22.5mm (equivalent). Other highlights include Full HD movie recording, iHS technology, simultaneous photo and video capture, mechanical image stabilisation for stills and “Multi-motion IS” for movies. Compatible with SDXC and SDHC memory cards including Eye-Fi media, the Olympus Stylus SP-820UZ also offers a 3” rear screen with a resolution of 460,000 dots, Intelligent Panorama and Backlit HDR functionality, improved Shadow Adjustment Technology and a Hand-Held Starlight mode for tripod-free shooting at night. The Olympus SP-820UZ is scheduled to go on sale from the end of September 2012 priced at £279.99/€349.00.

The Olympus Stylus VH-410 is a 16-megapixel compact camera with a 26-130mm equivalent zoom lens, CCD-shift image stabilisation and a Touch Focus feature. Other highlights include 720p high-definition movie recording, nine “Magic Filters,” in-camera Panorama Merging, Eye-Fi memory card support and a 3” touchscreen with a resolution of 460,000 dots. The Olympus VH-410 will hit the shelves in October, with pricing to be confirmed.

Nikon has posted five full-resolution sample images and a reduced-resolution movie captured with the new Nikon Coolpix P7700 high-end compact camera. Taken at sensitivity settings of ISO 80/20° and ISO 200/24°, the five Nikon P7700 samples are presented as ~4MB downloadable JPEGs, while the video can be watched online using a Flash plug-in.

The Nikon Coolpix P7700 is a premium compact camera with an f/2.0-4.0 Nikkor 7.1x zoom lens, a 1/1.7-inch, back-illuminated 12-megapixel CMOS sensor, lens-shift vibration reduction, Full HD movie recording capability, raw (NRW) file format and a 3-inch vari-angle LCD monitor. Two ED glass elements minimise chromatic aberration, a Neutral Density filter enables greater exposure control and the seven-bladed rounded iris aperture allows for a nice rendering of the out-of-focus highlights. PSAM exposure modes enable greater creative control, and three user modes let you recall your preferred camera settings instantly. Two customisable function buttons mean you can bypass the menu and set shortcuts to your favorite camera settings, while front and rear command dials offer easy access to key camera settings. The Nikon Coolpix P7700 will be available in September for a suggested retail price of $499.95/£499.99.

The Nikon Coolpix S800c is an Android-powered, Wi-Fi enabled compact camera with a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, 10x optical zoom, built-in GPS and a 3.5” OLED touchscreen. The 25-250mm Nikkor lens with ED glass comes with Vibration Reduction (VR) for blur-free photos and stable Full HD video, even while handheld. The camera’s connectivity features allow users to upload photographs and movies to their social networks, including Google+, Facebook and Twitter. Just like a smartphone or tablet device, the camera has the opportunity to run camera-specific photo and video apps while providing features that can’t be found on a typical cell phone. The Nikon Coolpix S800c will be available in September in white and black for a suggested retail price of $349.95/£379.99.
