The Apple iPhone 6 Plus is a new phablet boasting a 5.5" Full HD display with a resolution of 401 pixels per inch. The largest Apple smartphone to date, the iPhone 6 Plus has an 8-megapixel iSight camera with an f/2.2 lens, True Tone flash, optical image stabilisation and a new sensor featuring on-chip phase detection AF. The Apple iPhone 6 Plus can shoot Full HD videos at 30 or 60fps and lower-resolution movies at up to 240fps for slow-motion playback. Other photo-related improvements include next-generation local tone mapping, improved face detection and advanced noise reduction. Available in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB models, the iPhone 6 Plus can be yours from 19th September for $299, $399 and $499 respectively (on a two-year contract).

The Apple iPhone 6 is a new iOS 8-powered smartphone boasting a 4.7-inch, 326ppi Retina HD display and an 8-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 lens plus a new sensor featuring so-called "Focus Pixels" for what appears to be on-chip phase-detection AF. This technology promises faster focusing and better focus tracking when shooting subjects in motion. Other photography-related highlights include next-generation local tone mapping, improved face detection, advanced noise reduction, an easy-to-use time-lapse photography function, video recording at 120fps and 240fps for slo-mo playback, and "cinematic" video stabilisation (albeit no OIS as that feature is reserved for the Apple iPhone 6 Plus). The Retina HD display on the iPhone 6 has 1334x750 pixels and offers 100% coverage of the sRGB colour space. In addition, "dual-domain" pixels on the photo-aligned IPS display give you a wider angle of view, the company says. On a two-year contract, the 16GB model can be yours for $199, the 64GB variant for $299 and the 128GB version for $399. The Apple iPhone 6 will be available from 19th September.

Case Logic's full range of camera bags and cases are currently on display at the IFA show in Berlin. The Reflexion line includes backpacks, slings and holsters designed for fashion-conscious photographers, whereas the Luminosity line targets "globetrotters and explorers," the company says. The Luminosity line features 13 different bag styles with a wide range of backpacks, messenger bags, slings and holsters.

Eizo has introduced the ColorEdge CS240, a 24.1-inch monitor for photographers and graphic design professionals. The ColorEdge CS240 features a wide-gamut IPS panel with a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels and 99% Adobe RGB coverage. With this extended gamut, images shot in raw can be converted to Adobe RGB and images shot in Adobe RGB will be displayed in vibrant and lush colours, the company says. The Eizo ColorEdge CS240 comes equipped with DisplayPort, HDMI, and DVI input terminals. With the DisplayPort input, the monitor offers 10-bit display (more than one billion colours simultaneously) from a 16-bit look-up table, which also makes hardware calibration possible. For users that require a wide variety of calibration functionality, Eizo bundles its proprietary ColorNavigator 6 software. Preset target values for photography, printing, and web design are included for users looking for a simple way to calibrate the monitor. Experienced users can set their own target values for brightness, gamma, and white point, and generate an ICC profile. Dell has announced the world's first Ultra HD 5K computer monitor. The Dell UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor is a 27-inch display which boasts 5120x2880 pixels for a resolution of 218ppi. " Dell PremierColor and the anti-smudge / anti-reflective edge-to-edge glass design provide true-to-life color accuracy and pristine picture quality for color-critical work," the company says. "It also delivers immersive acoustics with two 16W integrated Harman Kardon speakers." Other product highlights include an integrated memory card reader and 6 USB ports.The Dell UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor has a recommended retail price of $2,499.99 and will be available in 2014 Q4.

Adobe today announced plans to significantly update Adobe Creative Cloud video desktop apps and Adobe Anywhere for video. Key updates to Creative Cloud extend native file support, with the addition of AJA RAW. Performance enhancements include accelerated Masking & Tracking; and new GPU-optimised playback that delivers better performance when viewing extremely high resolution 4K and UltraHD footage from Phantom Cine, Canon raw and RED R3D files. A refreshed user-interface across all the video applications supports HiDPI displays for both Mac Retina Displays and Windows 8.1. Powerful new media and project management features, including Consolidate & Transcode; Search Bins; and Multiproject workflows offer more ease and flexibility, at the project level, so Adobe Premiere Pro CC users can complete tasks more efficiently. Adobe Media Encoder now includes Destination publishing with preset options so users can render, deliver and share projects to multiple locations such as FTP sites and their Creative Cloud folder, automating the delivery process. Additionally, Extended Match Source support now includes added support for the QuickTime and DNxHD formats.  Additionally, new options in the Adobe Anywhere app for iPad are added, so users to scrub and review video footage faster.

The Zeiss Otus 1.4/85 is a new short telephoto lens for Canon EF and Nikon F-mount cameras. Featuring 11 elements in 9 groups, this 85mm f/1.4 lens is claimed to deliver "unprecedented" image quality, even wide open. "Specifically, that means a neutral bokeh in the background, highly detailed images without any optical artifacts, consistently high resolution power across the entire image field, no colour fringing or distortion, and an extremely high image contrast all the way into the edges," the company says. The Zeiss Otus 1.4/85 will be available worldwide with EF-mount (ZE) and F-mount (ZF.2) from mid-September 2014. The recommended retail price is €3,360.50 / $4,490.00.

Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) is reminding interested photographers that the deadline for entries for the 2014competition is getting closer and closer. Post-Photography: The Artist with a Camera by Robert Shore is a new title from Laurence King Publishing. Other Animals by Elliot Ross is a new title from Schilt Publishing. A sequel to Ross' critically acclaimed book of photographic animal portraits titled Animal, this book is a visual study of other species’ similarities and differences, their textures, physiques, and apparent physiognomies. Paloma Faith has launched an art collaboration with Talenthouse, inviting photographers and other creatives from around the world to design their own interpretation of Paloma’s third album ‘A Perfect Contradiction.’ Paloma and a team of judges including celebrated British portrait and fashion photographer Rankin, and representatives from Liberty department store will judge the collaboration. Using her current artwork (originally designed and photographed by David Standish), music and general persona for inspiration, Paloma is looking for you to come up with your own eye catching design. There are no limitations on medium, however it needs to be a design that can later be turned into a limited edition poster. At photokina 2014, Cosyspeed will present two new versions of its Camslinger 160 bag, which will be available from November for €99.99 / $119.00 each. Designed for mirrorless system cameras, the Camslinger bag adapts flexibly to the size of each individual camera setup. Canon will be releasing free firmware1 upgrades for both the Cinema EOS C500 4K and C300 Digital Cinema Cameras, as well as Cinema RAW Development 1.3, an updated version of Canon’s Cinema RAW Development software, in November. Offering compliance with the ITU-R BT.2020 (Rec. 2020) colour space employed in the 4K TV broadcasting tests carried out earlier this year in Japan, the firmware upgrade for the EOS C500 and EOS C500 PL camera models facilitates the capture of high-resolution video supporting this next-generation broadcast standard. The upgraded Cinema RAW Development software features the addition of 3D-LUT (Look-Up Table) for converting from Cinema Gamut/DCI-P3+ to the ITU-R BT.709 (Rec. 709) and DCI-P3 colour standards, enabling efficient video editing while maintaining low-chroma colour gradation. Additionally, support for EDLs (edit decision lists) enables only necessary time code-designated segments to be converted to the DPX and ProRes formats suitable for editing, effectively doing away with the need to process unnecessary files.
