“Picking up any new camera for the first time is a bit like being introduced to a new girl. There is a flush of excitement that colours any initially obvious flaws. And if the new girl happens to resemble Mom, or maybe on a bit less Freudian level, a previous amour, then so much the better. The Panasonic L1 appealed to me initially in just that way, and clearly that’s Panasonic’s intention. With its traditional (some would call them retro) exposure controls and manual focus capability, this is clearly a camera designed to appeal to the traditionalist. Add to this the very obvious homage paid to the style of the M series Leica (right down to an autofocus assist window designed to look like an RF window) and you have a camera that any long-time photographer over the age of 30 will drool over.”

“The Nikon D80 is a fantastic camera for its price. It is definitely better than its predecessor D70s but not quite the level as the mid-range D200 even though they share some similar features. And this is rightly so, because that’s exactly how Nikon has positioned the D80 - the upper rung of budget DSLR cameras. However that doesn’t deny the D80 from sharing certain attributes as its dearer D200 brother. For instance, besides some of the key specs, you can expect the same good quality build and a generous rubber cushioning on the grips for extra comfort. “

Instead it has “last burst” and “first burst” modes, which save a series of pictures either when the shutter is pressed or when it is released - the actual number of shots depends on the file type selected. In first burst mode it shoots 10 frames in about eight seconds.”

“Another surprise awaited me when I popped an SD card in the reader and made a series of 4x6 prints on HP Advanced photo paper from images shot by a Nikon Coolpix S6. Despite my earlier success with the garden shot, these prints were disappointing. Any bright object in them was oversaturated. One thing to remember with any inkjet is to wait a bit before evaluating the results. The ink is encapsulated in the paper surface and the vehicle has to evaporate and the paper surface shrink back down before the image can be evaluated. Waiting really didn’t help, though.”
