Tamron have announced the upcoming launch of the SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 telephoto zoom lens. This second-generation lens builds upon the success of the SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD, which was announced in December 2013, but promises to deliver superior optical performance with today’s high resolution DSLRs and to add improvements to several features including the speed and accuracy of the Vibration Compensation and auto focus systems. The design incorporates an upgraded optical construction (21 elements in 13 groups, including 3 low-dispersion lens elements) and a metal lens barrel. The minimum object distance has been reduced to 2.2m from 2.7m in the previous model. A new FLEX ZOOM LOCK mechanism enables the locking of the zoom ring at any position, while the Vibration Compensation system has been upgraded to offer three distinct image stabilisation modes; Standard, Panning and VC Mode 3, which prioritises the stabilisation of the captured images and forgoes the stabilisation of the viewfinder image. The Canon and Nikon mount models will be launched in the second half of September, with a Sony version being released at a later date. In teh US, the lens will be available for $1,399.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR

The AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR is a new full-frame super telephoto lens for Nikon SLRs. With a weight of "merely" 8.3lb / 3810g (vs. the 11.5lb / 5060g of its predecessor), the lens features two fluorite lens elements and four ED elements, as well as an electromagnetic diaphragm, which helps with maintaining consistent exposure during high-speed burst shooting of fast action. The lens features the latest incarnation of Nikon’s Vibration Reduction technology, with automatic tripod detection to counteract vibrations when mounted on a tripod. For pros shooting fast and erratic moving sports or subjects, using the SPORT VR mode will yield a more stable viewfinder image whether handholding the lens. The optical formula of this lens combines two fluorite elements and three Extra Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements to further reduce chromatic aberration while providing superior sharpness and color accuracy. Additionally, the new design is claimed to "significantly improve" AF tracking performance. For enhanced durability, the lens is gasketed against the elements and has a fluorine coating on a front protective meniscus element to make it easier to remove dirt, moisture and smudges. The supplied tripod collar boasts completely new bearings for smoother switching between horizontal and vertical orientation. To make the lens easier to carry, the tripod mount has been repositioned closer to the rear, a change that also enables the included one-piece hood to be easily reversed. FALSE ALARM: Nikon D800E "No Longer Supported" by Nikon USA?

Professional landscape photographer, author and PhotographyBLOG reader Nick Taylor has recently sent us an email with a surprising piece of news. “I was in the market for a new camera,” Nick says. “I was undecided with the D800E… or a DMF [Digital Medium Format].” Nick finally went for the D800E, and called Nikon USA asking where he could find it in stock. Their reply was shocking: “The D800e [is] no longer supported by Nikon,” meaning “they are not going to stock or make anymore.” After finishing the conversation Nick checked Nikon USA’s product page for current DSLR cameras, and found that the D800E was indeed no longer listed (the D800, without the “E” designation, continues to be on offer).

Upon receiving Nick’s email we contacted both Nikon UK and Nikon USA. The former company has confirmed this morning that “the D800e is still a current product in the UK.”

A Nikon Europe spokesperson has now confirmed that this is a false alarm, and the D800e is very much supported both in the US and globally:
“I’m happy to confirm that the D800E is a current Nikon product globally – we’re looking into where the misunderstanding might have come from.

With regards to the link not showing the D800E… because it is a variation on the D800, the D800E is not listed as a separate product. However, there’s plenty of information about it when you click through to the D800 product page:
http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Products/Product/Digital-SLR-Cameras/25480/D800.html”

Nikon D800E Gets DxOMarked

DxO Labs have posted their findings on the sensor of the new Nikon D800E camera. The overall DxOMark Sensor Score is 96 - essentially the same as the D800’s 95 points. Nevertheless, the tiny, one-point difference - which mainly comes from the slightly different Low-Light ISO scores - was enough for the D800E to snatch the first position from its twin brother, making it the best camera ever tested at DxOMark. That said, even DxO Labs believe that “the one-point spread between Nikon’s D800E and the D800 is so small that it can be considered a draw”.

Version B 1.01 resolves an issue that, in some rare cases, caused the camera to “lock up”, i.e. become completely unresponsive to all controls including the power switch (while reviewing the camera, we ran into this issue once - then and there, removing and reinserting the battery solved the problem). Additionally, the firmware update offers a fix for two minor bugs related to I) using the Nikon D800 with the optional WT-4 wireless transmitter and II) shooting in 5:4 crop mode with Active D-Lighting turned on. You can download the firmware upgrade from the website below,

Nikon Recalls Some EN-EL15 Batteries

Nikon has issued an important announcement regarding the EN-EL15 battery used in the Nikon D7000, D800, D800E and Nikon 1 V1 cameras. “While Nikon takes great measures to assure high quality products, it has come to our attention that a certain number of EN-EL15 batteries manufactured by one of our suppliers did not meet Nikon’s internal quality standards,” the company said in a statement. “In extremely rare cases, this may cause the battery to overheat and the exterior casing to become deformed.” If you use one or more of these batteries, check the lot number (the alphanumeric character string located at the bottom of the name plate) - if the ninth character is an E or an F, then the battery needs to be replaced. To request a replacement battery, call or e-mail Nikon’s Customer Support Department.

Official Nikon D800 / D800E Samples

Nikon has posted a number of full-resolution sample photos taken with the brand new Nikon D800 and Nikon D800E digital single-lens-reflex cameras. All of the sample images were captured in raw format and converted using Capture NX 2. The downloadable JPEG files range from 17.01 to 33.06 megabytes in size, and are apparently meant to demonstrate the resolution capabilities of the 36-megapixel FX sensor, first and foremost (which also means that there are no real high-ISO samples on display, with ISO 640/29° being the highest sensitivity setting used). You can download the Nikon D800 and Nikon D800E sample images from the websites below.

Nikon D800 Hands-On Photos

Want to see exactly what the new Nikon D800 DSLR camera looks like in the flesh?

The D800 has a high-resolution 36.3 megapixel full-frame 35mm sensor that Nikon claim makes it a rival to medium-format cameras, especially the D800E version which removes the anti-aliasing filter to achieve even more detail. Nikon UK predict that 10% of Nikon D800’s sold will be the special E version, which will be available at more specialist retailers.

The D800 still offers similar noise levels to the D700 (which carries on alongside the D800) and outperforms the D7000. ISO 50 is claimed to be better than Kodachrome, said Nikon UK’s James Banfield at yesterday’s launch event, with ISO 100 delivering the best quality of any ISO speed.

With high-speed SD and Compact Flash dual slots, the D800 offers maximum flexibility for a wide user base, although the brand new XQD format has been reserved for the flagship D4 camera.

Nikon D800 / D800E

The Nikon D800 is a new 36.3 megapixel FX-format professional D-SLR. The D800 delivers unprecedented levels of detail and tonal range, with the sensor providing a 12-channel readout with 14-bit A/D conversion and high signal-to-noise ratio. The Nikon D800 offers an ISO range of 50-25600, EXPEED 3 image-processing engine, Full HD (1080p) movies, external stereo microphone input, 51-point auto-focusing, 4fps continuous shooting in FX-format (6fps in DX-format), 921k-dot LCD monitor, an optical viewfinder with approximately 100% frame coverage and 0.7x magnification, USB 3.0 data transfer and high-speed CF (UDMA 7) and SD (SDXC and UHS-1) dual card slots.

The new Nikon D800E DSLR incorporates an optical filter with the anti-aliasing properties removed in order to produce the sharpest images possible. Aside from the optical filter, all functions and features are the same as on the regular D800.

The Nikon D800 costs £2399.99 / €2829 / $2999.95 and will be available in late March. The D800E costs £2689.99 / €3171 / $3299.95 and will be available in mid-April. The MB-D12 battery grip provides 6 fps continuous shooting speed in DX-format and costs £379.99 / €448.
