Canon UK has announced a new white edition of its EOS 100D digital SLR camera and 18-55mm standard zoom. Like the existing black variant, the white Canon EOS 100D features an 18 MP APS-C Hybrid CMOS AF II sensor and a range of simple controls and automatic shooting modes, as well as Full HD video capture. The camera is complemented by a white version of its EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM zoom lens, which covers a focal range of 29-88mm in 35mm terms. The kit will be available from May 2014 with an SRP of £499/€599.

Combined production of Canon's compact digital and interchangeable-lens digital cameras surpassed 250 million units on 31 January 2014, the company said in a statement. Canon began producing and marketing digital cameras in the mid 1990s. The first digital SLR cameras bearing the Canon logo - such as the Canon EOS DCS 3 (pictured) - were jointly developed by Canon and Kodak; with the first "true" Canon EOS dSLR - the Canon EOS D30 - being released in 2000. The first Canon digital compact camera, the Canon Powershot 600, had been introduced four years earlier.

Apple has issued a new Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update to MacOS X. Version 4.06 adds support for nine new cameras including the Canon EOS-1D C (pictured), EOS 100D and EOS 700D, the Hasselblad Lunar, the Nikon COOLPIX A, Nikon D7100, Nikon 1 J3 and Nikon 1 S1, and the Sony Alpha NEX-3N. Note that Aperture version 3.4 or later, or iPhoto version 9.4 or later, is required to install this update.

The new sensor uses phase detection pixels spread across 80% of the sensor’s imaging surface to provide increased AF speed and tracking performance when the camera is in live view or when capturing Full-HD movies. The EOS 700D’s advanced AF module consists of 9 cross-type sensors spread across the frame, and a new, simplified 360° rotating mode dial to provide easy and swift access to the camera’s various shooting modes. A 3” vari-angle Clear View LCD II touchscreen makes it easy for users to frame, shoot and review from a variety of angles. When shooting in Live View mode, the Hybrid CMOS AF system enables speedy and accurate autofocus for photos and video, the company claims. The Canon EOS 700D is available from late April, with an SRP of £629.99 / €799.99 / $749.99.
The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is a new standard zoom for the manufacturer’s APS-C digital SLR cameras, featuring near-silent STM technology optimised for focussing in live view and video modes. Other highlights include optical image stabilisation, an iris diaphragm with seven rounded blades, a non-rotating front element, Super Spectra coating and a close-focus point of 25cm. Canon has released a firmware update for the Canon EOS 1000D / Rebel XS digital SLR camera. Version 1.0.7 fixes bug that sometimes causes a “Cannot create folder” message to be displayed on the LCD screen, after which shooting is no longer possible with the SD card in the camera. Canon announced today that combined production of the company’s EOS-series film and digital SLR cameras passed the 40-million mark. The Canon EOS system was born in 1987 when the company announced the discontinuance of its FD line of manual-focus SLR cameras and lenses, and introduced the EOS 650 autofocus SLR camera along with the first EF lenses. In 1997, the 10th anniversary of the series, production reached 10 million camera units, and in 2003 passed the 20-million mark. After the rapid spread of digital SLR cameras, Canon went on to reach the 30-million mark during the series’ 20-year anniversary in December 2007, followed by the current 40-million-unit production milestone.

Canon have released firmware updates for three of its DSLRs, the EOS 50D, 450D (XSi, pictured) and 1000D (XS). In all three cases the new firmware update supports the AF assist beam feature of the new Speedlite 270EX flash, which was introduced alongside the Canon EOS 500D digital SLR a month ago. In addition, the 50D firmware update also changes the error indications that are displayed on the camera and addresses the vertical banding noise phenomenon.

Adobe has added RAW file support for 15 digital cameras to Lightroom 2.1 and Camera Raw 5.1, including the Nikon D90 and Canon EOS 50D. The Lightroom 2.1 update also includes improvements to Photoshop integration, Web module stability for Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit operating systems, performance with 64-bit Mac OS X 10.5 Macintosh computers, and Keyword migration from Lightroom. In addition, Adobe has released a new set of camera profiles available on Adobe Labs.
Version 1.9 of BreezeBrowser Pro adds RAW support for the Nikon D700, Nikon D60 and Canon EOS 1000D/Rebel XS camera, and extends GPS data support. BreezeBrowser Pro 1.9 allows you to geo-tag batches of raw or JPEG images with latitude, longitude and altitude data from a GPS receiver. Canon have announced cashback offers on three of their EOS DSLR camera range. Valid until 12th January 2009, there’s £30 / €40 off the EOS 1000D (pictured) with 18-55 IS kit lens, £50 / €65 off the EOS 450D, and £60 / €75 off the EOS 40D. Participants must be resident in the European Union, and the offer only applies to purchases made between Monday 15 September 2008 and Monday 12 January 2009.

The Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is a new 11x zoom lens. Offering an equivalent focal length of 29-320mm, the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is designed exclusively for use with EOS cameras featuring an EF-S lens mount. The EF-S 18-200mm features a 16 element, 12 group construction, close focusing distance of just 45cm, and 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer. The RAW converter software Silkypix Developer Studio now supports the Canon Digital Rebel XS / EOS 1000D, Ricoh GX200 and Fujifilm FinePix S100FS cameras. Version 3.0.22.2 is available as a free upgrade for registered users. Silkypix Developer Studio 3.0 costs $149.00 and a free trial version is available.

Canon USA have announced the Canon EOS Rebel XS, which was first unveiled in other markets last month as the EOS 1000D. “We are proud to introduce the new EOS Rebel XS camera at a very exciting time in digital imaging. As consumers have fully embraced digital photography, with many consumers purchasing their second or third digital camera models, we see the Rebel XS as the bridge to help photographers cross over from the world of point-and-shoot cameras to digital SLR technology,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. Expected to ship in August 2008, the black or silver Canon Rebel XS camera is only available in a zoom lens kit version, which includes the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens. The Canon Rebel XS’s estimated retail price is $699.99.
Just as we predicted, the Canon EOS 1000D is a new entry-level, 10 megapixel DSLR camera with Live View mode. The name of a brand new Canon DSLR camera, the EOS 1000D / Rebel XS, has been leaked by Canon. The EOS 1000D / Rebel XS was referenced in the help file of the latest version of Digital Photo Professional, Canon’s RAW converter software. Listed in the compatibility section, no other concrete details about the EOS 1000D / Rebel XS are available. We’d surmise that given the model number, this model will follow in the footsteps of the EOS 1000 film SLR and become the new entry-level Canon DSLR, below the current Rebel XSi / EOS 450D (pictured).

Epson have released a firmware update for the 80Gb Epson P-4000 photo viewer.
1. The new firmware provides support for 2GB SD memory cards.
2. Corrects a rotation issue that prevents JPEG images taken on PENTAX *ist D digital cameras from being rotated more than once. The rotation issue may also occur on other digital cameras that store large amounts of data (i.e. image thumbnail and other proprietary information) in the file header, such as the PENTAX *ist DL and Canon EOS 100.
3. When sending a print job with a selected paper size that is not supported by the attached printer, the viewer will prompt the user to select a supported paper size.
4. Fixes an issue that occurs when the total replay time on an ASF movie file is displayed. When the seconds segment is set to zero (:00), the hour segment would be displayed incorrectly. The hour segment now displays correctly.
