The Pentax Optio W30 digital camera is waterproof, dustproof and sandproof, making it an ideal companion for the family beach holiday, where no doubt it will be dropped in the sea and the sand. The Casio EX-V7 is a slim 7 megapixel digital camera with a 7x zoom lens equivalent to 38-266mm. Casio proudly boast that the EX-V7 is “the world’s slimmest digital camera with a 7x optical zoom lens”, a claim that Ricoh’s R6 camera may contest. The first model in the new Hi-Zoom category (so expect further releases soon), the Casio EX-V7 also features a 2.5 inch LCD, dual image stabilizer, MPEG-4 H.264 movies and no less than 33 different scene modes. The Ricoh Caplio R6 is a 7 megapixel digital camera with a 7x zoom lens equivalent to 28-200mm on a 35mm camera, yet it’s only 23mm thick and weighs 135g. 6 months on from the previous R5 model, the Ricoh R6 adds face-detection and a larger LCD screen, whilst retaining the optical image stabilizer and 1cm macro mode of the R5. The new Olympus SP-550 UZ is a bridge-style digital camera with an 18x zoom lens equivalent to 28-504mm on a 35mm camera - yes, you read that correctly, an 18x zoom, currently the biggest on the market. An optical image stabilisation system and ISO range of 50-5000 promise to counteract the inevitable camera-shake that occurs when hand-holding the SP550 at telephoto settings. A full range of creative exposure modes are offered, plus the Olympus SP-550 has 7.1 megapixels, macro mode of 1cm and a 2.5 inch LCD. The new Canon Digital IXUS 70 compact digital camera (also known as the Powershot SD1000) was first announced just before the PMA show in early March. Measuring just 19.4mm deep, the new IXUS 70 is Canon’s slimmest digital camera ever, and it also weighs just 125gms and fits in the palm of your hand. Headline features of the IXUS 70 include a 7 megapixel sensor, 2.5 inch LCD screen, 3x optical zoom lens and Face Detection. Based on the design of the original IXUS cameras, I find out if the Canon Digital IXUS 70 is the perfect fusion of retro styling and modern technologies.

The HP Photosmart R837 immediately recalls Sony’s Cyber-shot T series, with an attractive metallic silver finish and sliding lens barrier that both acts as a means of powering up or down the camera. HP is marketing the R837 as a kind of photo lab in the box, with the ability to correct red-eye and, something of a first, remove skin blemishes at the touch of a button. Pet-eye fix corrects the ‘bleached eye’ effect that invariably occurs when you point the flash at your furry friend.
