Are you excited about the upcoming Canon EOS R3 full frame mirrorless camera? Do you want to see some actual up close and personal shots of a real life model, rather than just Canon's official rendered product images?
Then you've come to the right place, as last week I was given an exclusive one-to-one briefing by Canon and had the chance to shoot an extensive gallery of hands-on photos of the R3.
As this is still an early tech announcement, though, to be more precise they were strictly hands-off photos, as I wasn't allowed to actually touch the camera, turn it on, open any of the ports or compartments, or see the bottom of it.
Canon's Product Intelligence Consultant, David Parry, was also under strict orders not to divulge any additional information about the EOS R3 other than what has already been revealed in the previous two press releases that Canon have issued. So I'm afraid I don't have any more information for you about the megapixel count of the sensor, for example, or whether it will be able to record 8K or just 4K video.
Canon did a similar thing for the EOS R5 camera in 2020, where they showed me an early pre-production model well ahead of the official launch that turned out to be virtually identical to the finished article. So if they follow the same plan for the R3, the photos that you see here will be almost 100% the same as the actual camera that will be available to buy later in 2021.

Photographer Gerd Ludwig offers some tips about digital photography on Kingston Technology’s ‘Icons of Photography’ website. Ludwig comments “Shooting inside the Chernobyl reactor was probably the most challenging photographic situation I’ve ever encountered. It was dark, loud, and claustrophobic; the clock was ticking as our group rushed through dimly lit tunnels strewn with wires, pieces of shredded metal and other debris as I struggled not to trip; I was dodging the spray of sparks from the drillers in highly contaminated concrete dust; and I knew that I had less than 15 minutes to capture impacting images of an environment that few have ever seen, and that I might never access again.” Read our in-depth Gerd Ludwig interview to find out more.

DIWA member website Steves Digicams have posted their review of the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II DSLR.
“How do you improve on what was widely regarded as the best studio/commercial dSLR available, the EOS 1Ds? The was the challenge faced by Canon’s engineers, and they responded with the 1Ds Mark II. The most touted improvement is the Mark II’s 50% increase in resolution, from 11.1-megapxels to 16.7-megapixels; it produces whopping full frame images of 4992 x 3328 pixels compared to the 1Ds 4064 x 2704. Canon Focuses on Imaging Innovation, Long-Term Leadership and a Future That Anticipates, Meets, and Exceeds Customers’ Needs
LAS VEGAS—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Feb. 9, 2004—Canon U.S.A.: Canon Raises Analog and Digital Imaging Standards Spanning Professional Product Sophistication to Point-and-Shoot Simplicity, Image Capture to Output and Photos to Video
Canon expands its commanding presence in the imaging industry with the rollout of nearly two-dozen new consumer products at the 2004 Photo Marketing Association exhibit Feb. 12 - 15. Building on the company’s recently announced record results for 2003, Canon’s big picture for 2004 features a battery of new imaging products designed to fit pro photographers’ needs and consumers’ lifestyles.
“Canon is proudly in the position of imaging industry leadership thanks to the foresight, creativity and talents of our engineers and designers who consistently find new ways to improve technology for real world applications,” said Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president and general manager of the consumer imaging group at Canon U.S.A., Inc, a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE: CAJ - News). “It is our goal - our unwavering ethic - to provide our customers with products that raise their expectations of what is possible and then deliver on and even surpass those expectations.”
The latest issue of the monthly online photo magazine, Vivid Light Photography, has just been published. Highlights this month include a review of the Canon EOS 300D:
“The other misconception is that the Digital Rebel is just an EOS 10D in a plastic body. That’s like saying a Subaru WRX STi is the same as an Imprezza; hell, they look similar don’t they? Yes, the DR has a plastic body, but that’s as much of the statement is true. Let’s look at the similarities: they have the same imaging chip and similar electronics, so the image quality should be as good as the 10D and when using both cameras back to back, I haven’t noticed any difference in image quality.”
and an article called David vs. Goliath which compares consumer lenses with pro lenses:
“These are both quality lenses but they are aimed at two very different types of shooters. The trick is to figure our which type you are and buy the right lens.
The amateur who buys the 80-200mm will soon tire of hauling around its bulk and the lens will start spending more time in the drawer than on the camera. Likewise the pro who buys the 70-300mm will be frustrated by its autofocus speed and will likely damage the lens at some point through hard use. “

Canon 2003 Group Pretax Profit Y448.2 Billion Vs Y330.0 Billion -5
[Dow Jones and Company, Inc.]
Dow Jones News Service via NewsEdge Corporation : The Japanese precision equipment maker said it expects another record net profit this year.
For 2004, Canon projects a group net profit of Y286 billion, up 3.7%. It expects group operating profit to rise 2.3% to Y465 billion this year, on a 4.1% increase in group revenue to Y3.330 trillion.
For this year, Canon estimates its digital camera sales will come to 15 million units, up sharply from 8.6 million units in 2003.
Canon said it expects the dollar to average Y105 and the euro Y130 for 2004.
Canon’s senior managing director, Toshizo Tanaka, said the company needs the dollar to trade between Y100 and Y105 to achieve profit growth this year.
“It would be difficult for us to lift profits if the yen becomes stronger than that,” Tanaka said.
Last year, Canon benefitted from its focus on a limited number of high-margin products, such as digital multifunction copiers and high-performance digital cameras, as well as from cost cuts at its manufacturing operations.
Among these products, the “EOS Kiss Digital,” a single-lens reflex digital camera designed for general users, sold well in Japan though the model is relatively expensive compared with compact-type digital cameras.
In the October-December quarter, Canon’s group net profit rose 25% to Y74.96 billion from Y60.07 billion a year ago, with group revenue growing 3.9% to Y894.89 billion from Y861.66 billion.
Canon Press Release 29/01/04
Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 29th January, 2004. Canon, a leader in photographic and imaging technology, sets new standards in professional photography with the announcement of the EOS 1D Mark II. Combining formidable speed and exceptional resolution, the EOS 1D Mark II delivers approx. 8.5 frames per second at 8.2 Megapixels, taking over from Canon’s EOS-1D as the most powerful D-SLR camera in the world.
Canon has integrated three new technologies to deliver the EOS 1D Mark II’s high-speed / high-resolution combination: Canon’s next generation DIGIC II processor, a new CMOS sensor, and a new extra large buffer system. These technologies work in concert to deliver 40 frame bursts at 8.5 fps in JPEG, or 20 frame bursts in RAW mode. This high level of performance can be achieved in either Single Shot AF or AI Servo AF mode.
“With commanding speed and phenomenal image quality, the EOS 1D Mark II sets a new performance benchmark for sports and news photographers,” says Mr. Komatsuzaki, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe. “With nearly double the resolution of the EOS-1D, the EOS 1D Mark II also opens the digital SLR realm to the areas of fashion, nature and event photography”.
