Fujifilm XF 50mm F1.0 R WR is World's Fastest Mirrorless Auto-focus Lens

The new Fujifilm XF 50mm F1.0 R WR is the first ever F1.0 auto-focus lens for mirrorless cameras.

Offering an equivalent focal length of 75mm in 35mm full-frame terms, it's ideal for portrait photography.

It weighs 845g, more than twice the weight of the similar XF 56mm F1.2 lens (405g), and measures 87x103.5mm (Diameter x Length). The filter size is 77mm.

Although undoubtedly a big, heavy lens, it still feels well-balanced on the X-T4 camera, even without a battery grip fitted.

The optical construction is 12 elements in 9 groups, including 1 aspherical element and 2 ED elements.

It's weather and dust resistant with seals in 11 different places, and works down to -10 degrees.

There are 9 rounded aperture blades for more attractive bokeh. Coupled with the maximum F1.0 aperture, this lens definitely offers the best bokeh of any XF optic.

At F1.0, the spherical aberration is intentionally left to soften the bokeh. At F1.2, the resolution is equivalent to the XF 56mm F1.2. At F2, vignetting is reduced like the XF 90mm F2.

Lens breathing is minimal. Fujifilm have officially measured it at 0.095%.

Auto-focusing was a little hesitant on the pre-production sample that Fujifilm sent us. The face and eye detection worked very well to improve the focus accuracy, though, even when shooting wide-open at f/1.0.

The minimum focus distance is 0.7m and the maximum magnification is 0.08x, which is almost identical to the XF 56mm F1.2.

The Fujifilm XF 50mm F1.0 R WR will be available on 24th September priced at £1499 / $1499 / €1599.

We've already been out shooting with the XF 50mm F1.0 - take a look at a gallery of sample images and some hands-on photos of the lens mounted on an X-T4 camera body.

In Camera Mode, users hold the camera by hand or set it up on a tripod and adjust the settings on the camera itself, and the images shot are simultaneously transferred to the computer for display on the screen or saving on the PC. Adjusting exposure and other shooting settings or activating the shutter release are all carried out on the camera. In PC Mode, users can check the viewfinder image of a remotely-setup camera, operate the camera and adjust its settings on the PC screen, with all images taken simultaneously transferred to the PC for display on the screen or saving onto PC. All adjustments to exposure and other shooting settings or activation of the shutter release are carried out remotely on the computer. The application features an "image analysis" function with histogram, highlight clipping warning and EXIF data display, plus an "image assessment" function that displays two images side-by-side for comparison, and a "categorisation / organisation" function.

Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition

The Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition boasts a rich, high-quality finish, an ultra-fast electronic shutter and a range of other additions. Delivering shutter speeds as fast as 1/32,000sec, the electronic shutter is completely silent, making the Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition one of the most discreet professional cameras out there. New to the suite of Film Simulation modes is Classic Chrome, which delivers subtle colours and beautifully muted tones reminiscent of vintage reversal film. Additionally, the X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition has a new Natural Live View function that removes the image quality settings from the viewfinder image while shooting, displaying natural, real-world images, close to what the naked eye would see through an optical viewfinder. The Fuifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition will be available in the UK from November 2014 with a suggested retail price of £1199.99. To complement the premium-coated camera, a luxury leather shoulder strap and aluminium hot shoe cover are supplied with the camera in a limited-edition kit.

Fujifilm X100S Hands-on Photos

Want to see exactly what the new Fujifilm X100S camera looks like in the flesh?

Check out our extensive hands-on gallery of 32 photos of the Fujifilm X100S, including a side-by-side comparison with its predecessor, the X100, and its new stable-mate, the X20.

The Fujifilm X100S is a premium compact camera with a newly-developed 16.3 megapixel APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor, EXR Processor II and faster auto-focusing than the original X100.

This claim was certainly borne out in our direct comparison of the two cameras, with the X100s focusing almost instantaneously despite running very early firmware. The X100 with the most recent firmware update lagged noticeably behind, so the X100S certainly promises to fix one of the few major criticisms of the original model.

Other interesting features such as focus peaking and the clever “Digital Split Image”, which displays dual images on the left and right to be lined up for manual focusing, weren’t working on the pre-production model that we tried, but things certainly look promising for the new Fujifilm X100S.
