Panasonic Announces Major Firmware Updates for LUMIX S and G Series Cameras

Panasonic has just announced the release of major firmware update programs for its LUMIX S and G Series cameras.

With the S1R firmware update, 5K video-output recorded internally in 4:2:0 10bit will become available.

The improved auto-focus from the recently released Lumix S5 will be rolled out for the S1, S1R and S1H.

The S1 will get firmware update 2.0 in the first half of 2021, which will include V-Log recording, 5.9K/C4K and 4K60/50p 4:2:0 10bit internal video recording, and 5.9K/4K/Anamorphic (4:3) 3.5K 12-bit RAW video data recording over HDMI on an Atomos Ninja V.

Panasonic S5 Review

The Panasonic S5 is a brand new hybrid full-frame mirrorless camera that's equally as capable at shooting both stills and video. In an ever more crowded market, does the Lumix S5 offer enough to stand out against the likes of the Sony A7 III, Canon EOS R and Nikon Z6? Read our in-depth review of the Panasonic S5 to find out, complete with full-size sample photos and videos.

Panasonic Lumix S5 is the New Full-Frame GH5

The new Panasonic S5 mirrorless camera is smaller and lighter than the popular GH5, but with a full-frame sensor rather than a much smaller Micro Four Thirds one!

It even has exactly the same 24.2 megapixel sensor as the much more expensive S1H model.

The Lumix S5 offers 4K 60p 4:2:0 internal video recording (with small crop), making it the only sub-£2000 camera to offer this.

Internal 10-bit video is available with a 30 minute time limit, tested at 40-degrees (almost double the temperature of some rivals).

You can then re-record for another 30 mins straight-away, and so on. In 8-bit, there is no recording time limit at all.

The full V-Log profile is pre-installed on the Panasonic S5 – it's not the light version or a paid upgrade – offering 14-stops of dynamic range.

You can switch between NTSC/PAL modes at any time without having to reformat the memory card or power down the camera.

The Panasonic Lumix S5 still uses contrast-based auto-focusing with DFD technology, but Panasonic claim that a brand new algorithm means that Face/Eye/Head AF is greatly improved.

There's no All-Intra codec – LongGOP instead - and the S5 uses a Micro HDMI port rather than a standard one.

Anamorphic 4K is included, as is automatic dual native ISO (you can't manually turn this feature on and off though). 4:3 Anamorphic mode is recorded in super-35mm crop mode.

There's a free-angle LCD screen on the back, 6.5 stops of in-body image stabilisation, and dual SD card slots

The Panasonic S5 can shoot 96 megapixel jpegs or raw files in the clever hi-resolution mode.

There are now 7 different 4K 10-bit cameras in Panasonic's extensive line-up. The S1H actually outsold the Panasonic S1 in 2019, despite only selling for 6 months rather than 12.

The Sony A7III, Canon EOS R and Nikon Z5 are the S5's main rivals.

The Panasonic Lumix S5 is priced at £1799 body only or £1999 with the 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, and it will ship mid-end September 2020.

In addition, Panasonic have unveiled a new firmware roadmap for the end-2020.

There's also an updated lens roadmap with an 85mm F1.8 lens due to be shipped by November and costing less than $1000. 24mm, 35mm and 50mm F1.8 lenses are the other new additions, along with a 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 telephoto zoom.

Panasonic S1R and Panasonic S1 35mm Full-frame Mirrorless Cameras

Panasonic has announced two mirrorless camera models with a 35mm full-frame image sensor - the Panasonic S1R and the Panasonic S1. The 47 megapixel S1R and the 24 megapixel S1 both feature 4K 60p/50p video recording, a new Venus image processing engine, Dual I.S. image stabilisation, a double slot for XQD memory cards and SD memory cards, and a triaxial tilt LCD screen.

In a very interesting move, Panasonic are using the Leica L-Mount standard for the S1R and S1 cameras. Panasonic will release three Lumix S Series compatible lenses at the same time as the launch of the S1R and S1 cameras - the 50mm F1.4 prime lens, 24-105mm F4 standard zoom lens, and 70-200mm F4 telephoto zoom lens - and seven more by the end of 2020. Panasonic have also partnered with Leica and Sigma to develop more L-mount lenses.

Both the S1R and S1 cameras will have HLG Photo Mode and High Resolution Mode. The former mode allows images to be shot with a wider dynamic range, whilst the latter takes eight consecutive images that are automatically shot while shifting the sensor and synthesized into a single image.

Panasonic S1R and S1 First Impressions

The Panasonic S1R and Panasonic S1 are two new full-frame mirrorless cameras, offering 47 megapixels and 24 megapixels respectively and using the Leica L-mount. In development for the last 4 years, the Lumix S Series promises to offer “Full frame without compromise”.

We were shown a very early prototype version of the S1R/S1 back in September 2018 by Panasonic. We weren't allowed to take any photos of the camera or presentation slides, such was the high level of secrecy at the time.

Early prototype versions of the S1R and S1 were then displayed under glass at Photokina 2018, with a promised simultaneous launch date for both models of “early 2019”.

Fast forward to 31st January 2019, and we've been able to shoot with a working version of the Lumix S1R and S1 at the Global press launch in Barcelona, Spain. We've updated our initial first impressions of the cameras and new lenses with some more detailed observations.

So read on for our first impressions of the new Panasonic S1R and S1 35mm full-frame mirrorless cameras...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX01 Review at Quesabesde

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX01Spanish website Quesabesde have just reviewed the new 6 megapixel, 28mm wide-angle lens Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX01.

“Of course the sensor has long been the Lumix’s achilles heel, and noise is still enough of an issue here that some fairly harsh noise reduction is needed. But whereas other recent Lumix models have been so noisy that the problem threatened to overwhelm all the good stuff, here the noise is only a serious problem in daylight at ISO 400. That said, noise gets steadily worse as light levels drop, and I cannot recommend the output in low light at ISO 100 or above for anything over postcard-sized prints.”

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5 Review at TrustedReviews

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5TrustedReviews have reviewed the new 6 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5 camera.

“Focusing is also a little sluggish, although I have encountered slower AF systems. In good light and with a high-contrast subject it takes a good half a second to focus, giving a total shutter lag of almost a second. This might not sound like much, but it is definitely toward the slower end of the scale when compared to other current models. In low light it is even slower, but thanks to the AF illuminator it can focus in total darkness at a range of about two metres.”

Panasonic DMC-FX9 Review at Imaging Resource

Panasonic DMC-FX9Imaging Resource have reviewed the Panasonic DMC-FX9, a 6 megapixel compact digital camera with optical image stabilizer, 3x Leica lens and 2.5-inch LCD screen with 207,000 pixels.

“Panasonic is somewhat unique in this area, offering stabilization on camera models that offer as little as 3x optical zoom, where other manufacturers until recently have restricted the feature to their long-zoom cameras. While stabilization on a 3x zoom camera like the Panasonic Lumix FX9 may not be as much of a necessity as it would be on a long-zoom digicam, it does make a useful difference in the photos you’ll be able to shoot in available light—without flash and, therefore, without red-eye. You’ll also need a tripod much less often, and those times when a tripod just isn’t an option, you won’t have to resort to boosting the ISO sensitivity (and noise levels) as much as you might have with a non-stabilized camera. If you’re in the market for an affordable digital camera with the advantages of optical image stabilization, the Lumix FX9 could be the camera for you.”

DIWA Platinum Awards 2005

DIWA Platinum AwardsThe 12 member websites of the DIWA Awards organisation have re-evaluated all DIWA Gold Award winners from 2005 and selected the best of the best. Nikon D50 was considered to be ”Best Digital System Camera”, Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ30 as the ”Best Advanced Digital Camera”, and Fujifilm FinePix F10 won the title of ”Best Digital Amateur Camera” in 2005.

Amsterdam, 13. February, 2006: DIWA (Digital Imaging Websites Association), a world-wide organisation of collaborating websites, today has the pleasure of announcing the winners of the annual DIWA Platinum Award for 2005. DIWA members from Europe and America continuously test and review digital imaging products for their readers. For digital cameras, more than 200 details must be checked, tested and evaluated. Then, each review is carefully monitored and compared by DIWA to ensure error-free, reliable and comprehensive test results.

Top ranked products will receive DIWA Awards in the value of gold, silver or bronze, based on summarized average scores. At the end of each year, one of the gold winners from each of the three digital camera categories is selected by the members as the best of the best, honoured by a ”DIWA Platinum Award”.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LZ2 Review at Steves Digicams

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ2DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the 5 megapixel Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LZ2, which features a 6x optical zoom lens and an Optical Image Stabilizer to combat camera shake.

“In an entry-level point-n-shoot digicam market dominated by “me-too” 3x optical zoom 4 and 5-megapixel compact cameras, Panasonic has moved beyond the ordinary with their 2005 models, the LZ2 and LZ1, equipping them with a 6x optical zoom lens and image stabilization. With its Simple and Scene modes, the 5-megapixel LZ2 automates all of its exposure functions, allowing the beginner to concentrate on the picture, not the camera. Normal mode gives the more experienced user control of white balance, ISO, focusing modes and image processing options, but the advanced user will not find aperture priority, shutter priority or manual exposure modes.”
