To build awareness of the overcrowding within shelters and the 3,000 animals euthanised each year*, Guinnevere captured a "dog's best day" with shelter dog, Willa. “Four years ago, I started photographing shelter dogs. With millions of animals still in shelters looking for their forever home, I wanted to try and make a difference and do my part to change people’s opinions of animal shelters and their residents,” said Shuster. “It’s been amazing working with Canon to change the portrayal of shelter animals by showcasing how to use photography to capture dogs in their natural state, having fun, rather than the stereotypical pictures that show shelter animals behind ‘bars.’” Click through / scroll down to watch the full #WillasBestDay film, shot entirely on Canon EOS Rebel T6i DSLR cameras.

Canon USA has recalled 68,200 EOS Rebel T4i DSLR cameras. Canon have previously stated that the front rubber grips of some units of the Rebel T4i may change color (turn white) after a short period of time. Now the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have asserted that a chemical used in the camera’s rubber grips can result in a reaction that changes the grips from black to white and poses a risk of skin irritation to the consumer. Canon USA has received one report of a consumer who developed a minor rash after contact with a surface where the camera had been. This recall involves EOS Rebel T4i digital SLR cameras with a 12-digit serial number that contain a second digit that is a “3” or “4” and a sixth digit that is a “1.” Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cameras and contact Canon U.S.A. to have replacement rubber grips installed free of charge.
Canon U.S.A. has issued a statement saying the front rubber grips on a certain batch of its EOS Rebel T4i / EOS 650D digital SLR cameras may turn white after a short period of time. The phenomenon is caused by a substance called zinc bis (N,N’-dimethyldithiocarbamate), which is a by-product of a chemical reaction between the rubber accelerator and other substances. (The company says the quantity of rubber accelerator used in the affected production lots was slightly higher than usual.) In addition to the colour change, the substance may, in rare cases, cause allergic skin reactions to develop when it comes into contact with your skin. Click through / scroll down to read the product advisory, which also contains instructions on determining whether your camera is affected or not.

DxO Labs have released their sensor-based data obtained from a pre-production Canon EOS 550D digital SLR camera. The Canon EOS 550D / Digital Rebel T2i, which was only announced a week ago, got a sensor rating of 65.6 on a scale of 1 to 100, which is less than some APS-C competitors (Nikon D5000/D90/D300/D300s, Pentax K10D, Samsung GX20, Sony A380/A550/A700) have received in the past, but it has to be mentioned that all of these competitors offer lower resolution and most of them are prosumer rather than entry-level models.

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i/500D Companion is a new book written by Ben Long and published by O’Reilly. Although the Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i/500D comes with a manual, Long explains why you might need this book to get the most out of your camera. “Knowing what each button on your camera does won’t necessarily mean you can shoot great pictures. Personally, I know the basic concept of a paintbrush, but I can’t paint a decent painting to save my life. To use a creative tool well, you must understand both the technique and the craft of the tool, as well as have some sense of artistry when you use it.” The book sells for $24.99 USD, £18.99 GBP, but it is also available as an ebook for just $19.99 USD.

The Nikon D90 Companion by Ben Long is a new book from O’Reilly Media. This tutorial goes beyond exploring all the buttons and dials, and aims to teach readers about the art of photography as well. In that sense, it is more like a photography class built specifically around the D90 than simply a technical guide to a camera, the publisher claims.

Steves Digicams have reviewed the Canon EOS Rebel XS, a new entry-level, 10 megapixel DSLR camera with Live View mode.
“The Rebel XS has the ability to produce beautiful photos, right out of the box. The vast majority of our outdoor photos showed excellent exposure, nice image sharpness (using standard Picture Style), and pleasing color saturation. The included Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom is a great starter lens, offering about 3x magnification. While using this combo, I saw very little edge softness and only very moderate barrel distortion. I also found that there were no traces of purple fringing (aka Chromatic Aberrations) in any of our samples.”

The-Digital-Picture have reviewed the new Sigma APO 50-150mm F2.8 II EX DC HSM lens.
“The Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 II EX DC HSM Lens is a very attractive combination of focal length range, wide aperture and size/weight. Unfortunately, focus calibration issues appear to be prevalent in this lens. All three purchased-retail-new copies of this lens I tried strongly front-focused on both my Canon EOS Rebel XSi / 450D and Canon EOS 40D DSLRs. All three focused consistently, but all focused well in front of the subject.”

The-Digital-Picture have reviewed the Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi, a 12 megapixel compact DSLR camera.
“The number of people moving up to digital SLR cameras has been amazing - but so are the images these cameras can deliver. Even compared to the not-very-old Canon Rebel XTi / 400D, the Canon EOS Rebel XSi / 450D delivers better image quality from a more attractive body with more features ... I’m very pleased (actually somewhat surprised) with the improvements delivered by the Canon EOS Rebel XSi / 450D. It will be a worthwhile upgrade for many XTi / 400D owners - it is a lot of camera for the money for anyone purchasing it. “

PopPhoto have reviewed the new Canon EF-S 55-250mm lens, which incorporates a 4-stop Image Stabilizer to combat image blur caused by camera shake and slow shutter speeds.
“A natural for globe-trotting vacationers and soccer parents, this is the obvious second lens for Canon EOS 40D and Rebel XSi owners. Clearly it and the 18-55mm IS make an attractive team that promises sharp pictures in dicey light across an amply wide 13.9X zoom range. And you can’t beat that price.”

Canon has launched the first of two new television commercials to support the Canon EOS Rebel and Canon PowerShot digital camera lines. “Journey,” uses a unique technology that blends individual digital still photographs shot with the Canon EOS-1D Mark III into a “picture-trail” motion commercial. “In this spot, the journey is the destination. Edited together, the shots made for a compelling story. But each single Canon photograph is also a piece of art in itself. You can freeze this ad at any given moment and find a photo that you’d probably like to blow up, frame and put on your wall.” said Grey New York’s chief creative officer Tor Myhren. The latest PowerShot commercial, set to air in early June, will continue to feature Maria Sharapova and her charismatic puppy, “Dolce.”
The name of a brand new Canon DSLR camera, the EOS 1000D / Rebel XS, has been leaked by Canon. The EOS 1000D / Rebel XS was referenced in the help file of the latest version of Digital Photo Professional, Canon’s RAW converter software. Listed in the compatibility section, no other concrete details about the EOS 1000D / Rebel XS are available. We’d surmise that given the model number, this model will follow in the footsteps of the EOS 1000 film SLR and become the new entry-level Canon DSLR, below the current Rebel XSi / EOS 450D (pictured).

Canon’s current EF lens lineup comprises more than 60 models, with two new high-performance L-series telephoto lenses being added this Spring.

Canon UK held a glitzy event for their new Spring collection of products this morning at the Science Museum in Central London. Against a somewhat ironic backdrop of Euro 2008 (well, at least for us England supporters), which Canon are sponsoring, no less than 36 new products were shown off to over 200 members of the press and trade. In a somewhat low-key line-up from the camera side of things, the new Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi stood out as the main draw - unless you can afford several thousand pounds for the new 800mm and 200mm lenses, that is. We managed to make our way through the throng and literally grab a couple of minutes with the Canon 450D, plus get hands-on with the new Digital IXUS 80 IS and A-series Powershot compacts. Click the link below to view a selection of “live” product shots…
The Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi is a new 12 megapixel compact DSLR camera. looking very similar to the previous 400D from the outside, the EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi features a larger 3 inch LCD screen, new 9-point AF system, 14-bit processing, Live View mode with contrast detection AF mode (like the Panasonic L10) and 3.5fps continuous mode. Production of Canon EOS SLR cameras has just passed the 30 million mark, with 10 million of those digital bodies. The achievement coincides with Canon’s 70th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of the launch of its EOS line of SLR cameras. In March of 1987, Canon’s 50th anniversary, the company introduced the EOS 650 AF SLR camera (pictured), the first model of the EOS series. One for the fact-fans out there - EOS is the name of the Greek goddess of the dawn.
Canon will announce new imaging products on January 24th 2008, a week before the PMA trade show starts in Las Vegas, USA. An interview with Robert Westin of Canon Sweden on the Swedish website Kamerabild.se reveals that 2008 is set to be an even bigger year for Canon than 2007, with more products being released. Westin doesn’t give any details away about what exactly will be released - recent internet rumours have suggested replacements for the Digital Rebel XTi / EOS 400D and the EOS 5D (pictured) DSLR cameras.

CNET have reviewed the new Olympus E-410 DSLR camera.
“In general, the E-410 is capable of producing very good photos; in that respect, it differs little from competitors like the Nikon D40x and Canon EOS Rebel XTi. It takes a little more effort to get there, however—a bit of an absurdity given Olympus’ marketing it as a nonthreatening step up for the point-and-shoot photographer. If the Live View mode or compact design appeals to you, go to your local retailer and give the Evolt E-410 a try to make sure that their appeal lives up to your expectations. If not, you’ll get better value for your entry-level buck with almost any of the models on our list of top prosumer dSLRs.”

TrustedReviews have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“In terms of performance, the EOS 400D is everything we’ve come to expect from a Canon DSLR. It starts up virtually instantly, and in continuous shooting in fine JPEG quality mode it can rattle off 21 shots at an impressive 2.5 frames per second before it has to pause to write data to the memory card. Even then, the progressive buffer means you don’t have to wait until it’s finished processing every frame before you can shoot again. Even in RAW plus fine JPEG it can shoot at the same speed, although this time the buffer can hold only eight shots, and you have to wait a little longer before shooting again.”

DigiCamReview have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“Image quality is excellent, the images have very good colour, with good contrast and detail, with low noise except at the highest ISO settings (ISO1600). Images were slightly smoothed but this is adjustable within the camera and detail was very good. Purple fringing was very low with the kit lens, and red-eye was not a problem. The camera was very competent at focusing (except on very plain surfaces). Vignetting in photos was very mild and I did not notice barrel or pincushion distortion. There is a good range of image sizes, and the compression options include a RAW mode. Auto white balance, metering, and exposure seemed to be good to very good. The camera gives very good control over image quality - pressing the menu button lets you change “film” properties and this can be customised.”

As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, and a former Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems, as well as a recording studio owner/operator, inventor, and now, a digital camera enthusiast, GARY has more digital camera knowledge in his entire brain than most people have in their little finger. In the unlikely event that GARY would not know the answer to your question, he will answer it anyway, true to the spirit of the word “Parries”, a fencing term which, in this context, implies “cleverly evasive answers”. So let your imagination run wild. Email all your nagging digital camera questions to: [email protected] , and then, En Garde!
You may also attach to your email an ORIGINAL PHOTO of your choosing. A preview of the photo will be displayed with your question, and a full-sized version will be just a click away. The new Canon EOS 400D (also called the Canon Digital Rebel XTi) is the latest entry-level digital SLR camera from Canon. The Canon 400D builds on the success of its predecessor, the extremely popular 350D, by adding a number of key new features. A 10 megapixel CMOS sensor, 2.5 inch LCD screen, dust protection system, 9 point auto-focus and continuous shooting at 3fps are the main improvements. But in a constantly changing sector of the market, is the 400D still competitive? Read our in-depth review to discover the answer.

Steves Digicams have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“The XTi’s self-cleaning image sensor is a first for Canon in any of its dSLRs. It eliminates or reduces the occurrence of dust on the image sensor. With other dSLRs (Olympus E-series and the Sony A100 notable exceptions), the risk of dust on the sensor occurs at every lens change; it’s not a matter of if, but when your images will have noticeable dark spots - especially noticeable at small apertures. The XTi’s self-cleaning process is invoked each time you power the camera off and on, causing an ultrasonic vibration to shake dust loose from the image sensor. I did not purposefully deposit any dust on the sensor during our testing, but did change lenses frequently in dusty conditions and found no evidence of dust in our samples.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“The Rebel XTi plays both catchup and leader, adding features that other cameras have added in the past 18 months, like a bigger LCD and higher resolution, but also leading in areas others have yet to catch up. In terms of a comparison to other EOS cameras, the XTi is the low-price resolution leader, and includes sensor cleaning technology that no other EOS has.”

DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi is an update of the Rebel XT with a 10.1-megapixel sensor, a dust removal system and a 2.5-inch 230,000-pixel LCD, along with a number of other improvements. At a list price of $699.99 with an 18-55mm kit lens, or $599.99 for the body only, the Rebel XTi picks up much of the image processing architecture of current pro and prosumer Canons with the same Picture Styles system. Oddly enough, Canon’s XTi is now the cheapest DSLR from the manufacturer, but its resolution beats out the Canon EOS 30D which has 8.5 megapixels and is a wedding and portrait stalwart.”

CNET have published their review of the new Panasonic DMC-L1 DSLR camera.
“If Panasonic is really serious about building digital SLRs, it’s going to have to invest heavily in effective noise reduction and start paying attention to the ergonomics of its body designs. Plus, it’d be nice of the company to realize that, while a nice kit lens is certainly welcomed, it also need to sell its bodies without a lens. If you’ve got a budget between $1,500 and $2,000 to spend on a digital SLR, you’d be much better served buying a Nikon D80, a Sony Alpha DSLR-A100K, or a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi than this Lumix. Plus, you’d still have plenty of cash left over for an extra lens or a flash unit.”

Tamron USA Press Release
November 15, 2006, Commack, NY—The Tamron “It’s a Wild World” 2006 Photo Contest turned out to be an even bigger and wilder event than even we could have anticipated. We received well over 1000 entries from all parts of the country covering a mind-boggling menagerie of animals ranging from bears to baboons, horses to hedgehogs, and iguanas to insects. Choosing the winners from among the huge number of outstanding pictures submitted was anything but easy. As you may recall, the “It’s a Wild World” Photo Contest was open to any original photograph prominently including an animal, wild or domestic, that was taken with a Tamron lens, and was limited to U.S. residents. The Grand Prize: A magnificent Tamron AF18-200mm Di-II lens in the DSLR mount of the winner’s choice, plus having the winning picture showcased in Tamron’s Viewfinder newsletter and in the Gallery section of the popular Tamron website. In addition, twenty favorites will have their winning images published on the website for all to admire.
DIWA member LetsGoDigital have published their review of the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“There’s more, however. The screen on the camera’s back side has undergone a revolution. Not only is the small Canon now equipped with a large 2.5-inch LCD display, it also proves of terrific quality. In fact, it is even better than those found on the EOS 5D and the EOS 1D Mark II N; this screen is bound to spark the jealousy of many a professional DSLR owner! The value of a good monitor can simply not be underestimated, after all, you will be dealing with it all of the time. The LCD now also shows the photographic settings, which is very pleasant to work with in practice. Although we must admit we find the eye sensor a rather irksome piece of work - but to each his own! “

ePhotoZine have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“So how do you improve on a class-leading camera? Owners of Canon’s EOS 350D camera may well be wondering if the extra pixels, larger screen, improved autofocus and anti-dust measures will make an upgrade worthwhile. The jump from eight to 10 megapixels doesn’t make a great difference to image quality and although the other improvements are welcome, it may not be time to dust off your credit card and start checking how much 350Ds go for on eBay just yet.”

PopPhoto have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“Besides its great leap forward in image quality, the Rebel XTi gains enough additional capability (much of it from Canon’s EOS 30D) that it strains the term “entry-level.” It’s now more of a high-end camera in a bargain body. So it makes sense to compare this upstart both to the Nikon D80 and Canon’s own 30D, an 8MP camera currently selling for $350 more than the Rebel XTi.”

DIWA member and Slovenian website e-fotografija have reviewed the new 10 megapixel Nikon D80 DSLR camera.
“With the D80, Nikon is ahead of the pack again. But that’s just what they do. Compared to Canon, in the amateur and semi-pro class, Nikon always had cameras that were a bit more advanced than the competition. They were, of course, also more expensive. For this reason, the Nikon D80 shouldn’t be compared to the EOS 400D / Rebel XTi or the Alpha 100 and other entry-level cameras. The first clue is the larger body of the D80, offering a far better grip. This is of course true for the photographer who values grip above size. In addition to that, the Nikon D80 has a load of useful features in the menus. For this reason, I recommend the Nikon D80 to all photographers who want something more, not just a mass market entry level camera.”

DIWA member and Norwegian website Digit.no have published their review of the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“Far too often we see image quality being sacrificed for higher image resolution, mainly in terms of increased image noise. This is not the case with the EOS 400D. Despite its 10 MP resolution, it delivers image quality on par with its far more expensive sibling, the EOS 30D. However, it’s a shame that the performance of the standard zoom lens EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 II does not justify the performance of the camera. In comparison with its predecessor, the EOS 350D, all details are either identical or considerably better, at a lower price. Its performance proved to be way beyond expectations. With a SanDisk Extreme IV memory card, we shot twice as many pictures as specified by Canon, with a faster 3.2 fps speed. Amazing! Add to this a high resolution 2.5” LCD screen with eye control sensor, sensor dust removal, picture styles, improved user friendliness and lots of other goodies, and you get a camera that will be placed on top of many wishing lists for Christmas. And it deserves it!”

ACD Systems Press Release
ACDSee Pro Photo Manager Gives Professional Photographers Total Control Over Their Workflow with public beta RAW Format Support.
Victoria, British Columbia – November 2, 2006 – ACD Systems International Inc. (TSX: ASA), today announced a public beta software release which updates ACDSee® Pro Photo Manager, adding support for the newest RAW formats. Developed specifically for the professional photographer, ACDSee Pro will be showcased from November 2-4 at PhotoPlus Expo, Booth #1212, in New York. ACDSee Pro delivers advanced functionality designed to streamline the workflow of professional photographers, while incorporating the speed and organizing capabilities synonymous with ACDSee software solutions. “Once again, our commitment to working closely with professional photographers yields support for the newest digital cameras”, said Doug Vandekerkhove, CEO of ACD Systems.
In their latest article CameraLabs consider whether or not it’s worth upgrading to the full-frame Canon EOS 5D digital SLR for owners of the 20D and 350D / XT.
“So the question facing owners of Canon’s 10D, 20D and even 30D, along with the 300D / Rebel and 350D / XT, is what should they buy for a really significant upgrade? Since we’re probably at least six months away from an ‘EOS 40D’, the most obvious answer is of course Canon’s own EOS 5D, but this has implications beyond upgrading from, say, a 20D to the 30D. The big selling point of the Canon EOS 5D is of course its high resolution full-frame sensor, but for people who’ve only ever owned Canon EF-S mount digital SLRs, the switch will involve more than just a new body. After all if the only Canon body you’ve ever owned is a 20D, 30D, 300D / Rebel or 350D / Rebel XT, chances are you mostly own EF-S lenses designed for their physically smaller sensors. “

DCViews have compared the new 10 megapixel Nikon D80 and Canon Digital Rebel XTi DSLR cameras.
“The D80 is a very responsive camera and with 40 JPEG/fine or 7 NEF (RAW) at a speed of 3 frames per second it almost equals the ’ motor drive’ of the EOS Rebel XTi. After such a burst the buffer is written to the memory card. During that time the camera is available for a single shot. All numbers and speeds mentioned heavily depend on the transfer speed of the memory card and the nature of the composition (file size of the JPEG).”

DPReview have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“The EOS 400D (Rebel XTi) turned out to be everything we expected it to be; a progressive upgrade to the already hugely successful EOS 350D (Rebel XT). Image quality was just as good, with plenty of detail, low noise and sophisticated noise reduction at higher sensitivities an well balanced, and thanks to PictureStyles predictable, color and tone. It also has a significantly improved user interface, dust reduction system, 9 point auto-focus, larger LCD monitor and combined status display / setting change system. All this in a camera which is just as small and light as the camera it replaces.”

PCMagazine have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“In my labs and real-world testing, the Canon Rebel XTi did quite well. On daylight still-life shots, the camera demonstrated a little more noise than the Nikon D80 did, but in general, it produced excellent dynamic range and contrast. Colors were vibrant, even in the deepest tones, such as purple, and showed very little fringing. Images were sharp—sharper than either the Nikon D80’s or the Sony Alpha A100’s.”

DCResource have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“Overall, the Rebel XTi’s image quality is excellent. The camera generally took well-exposed pictures, with pleasing colors and minimal noise. Purple fringing levels varied depending on what lens I used, but it usually was not a problem. The only real issue I have with regard to image quality may not be an issue to many people. I like my photos a little sharper than what the XTi produces at default settings. Canon D-SLRs produce very smooth-looking images, but they can look a little soft compared to what those of you with point-and-shoot cameras are used to. Thus, I’d probably use the Landscape Picture Style, which has a sharpness setting of four (instead of three). You can also create your own custom Picture Style with with the sharpness setting that you like the best.”

The-Digital-Picture have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“The image quality coming out of the Canon EOS 400D Digital Rebel XTi is excellent - We expect nothing less from Canon and they have delivered. Image quality is, however, different from Canon’s other recent DSLRs. Since a change such as this takes time to get used to (post processing-wise), I will continue to evaluate my results. But, what I am seeing is a new tone curve. Reds, yellows, and oranges seem to be slightly darker while blues seem slightly lighter. The tone curve seems to push shadows darker - but the detail remains. In addition, the 400D/XTi meters 1/3 stop darker than the 30D. Maybe Canon got tired of looking at our blown highlights. “

UPDATE: CameraLabs have now added a short video tour of the Canon EOS 400D.
The Canon 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA) is finally unveiled today, after weeks of rumours and the usual leaks. Offering 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and perhaps most interestingly a new integrated dust removal system, the Canon 400D replaces the popular 350D. Apparenty a Canon EOS 350D was sold every 90 seconds in the UK during the first half of 2006 - I wouldn’t bet against the 400D emulating that success. The Canon EOS 400D 18-55 kit will be available from late September 2006 for £719.99 RRP inc. VAT / €1039.99 RRP inc. VAT (Body only £649.99 RRP inc. VAT / €939.99 RRP inc. VAT).
UPDATE: I’ve now added some images from this morning’s UK press conference to the end of this article, showing both the black and silver versions.

Canon today announces its next generation D-SLR: the Canon EOS 400D. Featuring a 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor, new EOS Integrated Cleaning System, larger and brighter 2.5” LCD and 9-point AF, the Canon 400D is predicted to take the lead as the world’s most popular camera. The 400D is positioned above the EOS 350D, currently the fastest selling SLR camera of all time. Canon’s EOS 300D, the world’s first consumer D-SLR, kick started a digital revolution in 2003. “We are now witnessing a mass consumer trend towards D SLR,” said Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe. Consumer research shows it is not only existing film SLR owners now switching to digital SLR photography. “On top of the existing 21 million analogue EOS shooters, a completely new profile of consumer is adopting digital EOS and driving growth,” said Jensen. “With European household penetration having only just hit 3%, the question now is not ‘will this market be big’, but ‘how big will this market become’.”

ePhotoZine have published their review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“The first thing that strikes me about the EOS 350D is just how small it is, measuring just 9.5cm tall, 12.5cm wide and 13.5cm deep, with the lens it really is tiny for an SLR camera. In fact, some people may find the camera too small. I found the tiny finger grip comfortable, even though there is only room for two of my fingers, leaving my little finger with nothing to grab hold of. When the camera has the standard 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S lens attached, the camera is well balanced. This is not the case with heavier lenses from Canon’s extensive EF lens range. A battery grip is available which helps give a bit more camera to grab hold of.”

DCResource have reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.
“From most angles the 30D looks just like its predecessor, the EOS-20D. But take a look at the back of the camera and you’ll see the most noticeable difference: a large 2.5” LCD display. While the screen isn’t as bright or sharp as the one on the Nikon D200, it’s still much nicer than the one found on the 20D or Rebel XT. The 30D is very well put together, with a metal core and solid plastic and rubber outer shell. The controls are well-placed, and Canon hasn’t gone overboard with buttons. Some of the controls, like the four-way controller and playback zoom buttons, are downright useful. Like the 20D before it, the 30D supports both EF and EF-S lenses, and the 1.6X focal length conversion ratio is unchanged.”

“A well-designed compact 8-megapixel digital SLR camera, the Olympus Evolt E-500 offers a notably broad set of features for its class, including Olympus’s signature dust-reduction system. Every time you turn on the E-500, its supersonic wave filter vibrates 35,000 times per second to shimmy dust off the CCD. CameraTown have published their review of the new ZAP-SHOT RF Wireless Remote control for the Canon EOS Digital Rebel, Rebel XT, 300/350D Digital SLRs.
“Announced in early September, the ZAP-SHOT is the perfect accessory or gift for owners of the Canon EOS 300D, 350D, Rebel, or Rebel XT. What is the ZAP-SHOT? The ZAP-SHOT is a wireless remote trigger for the aforementioned Canon Digital SLRs that use Radio Frequency to trigger the shutter release of the camera. By using RF, the photographer is able to trigger the camera from up to 75 feet (or more) away and without a line-of-sight limitation. Unlike a remote cable switch, the ZAP-SHOT allows you the freedom to operate your camera’s shutter without having to touch or even be near the camera. The flexibility will start to get your creative juices flowing. Just think, you’ll now be able to shoot pictures that you’re actually in - without having to use the customary “Ready…. Set .... RUN.”

Graphics Management Press - Press Release
Digital Secrets and Graphics Management Press have released DSLR: Canon Digital Rebel XT / EOS 350D eBook.
A deep camera deserves a deep eBook. Something that goes beyond the manual and explores how to get much more out of the camera and its features. That’s the targeted goal of the DSLR series of eBooks.
The Canon Digital Rebel XT is an amazing camera with features so deep that virtually no single photographer uses them all. There are even four different functioning cameras inside the XT and each behaves with different buttons in different ways for different kinds of photographic results.
Here’s a camera that has redefined the DSLR market and the new Rebel XT eBook digs deep beneath its surface to bring out its secrets, special techniques, tricky technologies and wide range of accessories and lenses.
The Italian website Fotocamere Digitali have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
”“Professional resolution”, very good image quality; noise only starts at 800 ISO. Fast and precise autofocus. Up to 600 shots on a battery charge. Perfect? No, I would have seen better menues and viewfinder in such a good camera. Handling could be a problem if you have big hands. The best digital reflex on the market for that money.”

“Canon and Nikon have long been head-to-head competitors in the SLR (single-lens reflex) camera market, and that fierce rivalry has carried over into the digital-SLR market as well. The $1,499 Canon EOS 20D body is Canon’s latest counter to Nikon’s best-selling $999 Nikon D70 body, which was an Editors’ Choice winner in the digital SLR category (and Nikon’s answer to Canon’s $900 Digital Rebel). Sales rose 7.3 percent to 912.5 billion yen in the three months to June 30th. “Canon’s cost structure is impressive and it can stand the price pressure that other companies can’t,’’ John Yang, an equity analyst at Standard & Poor’s in Tokyo.

TopicPoint have published their review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“I’m happy to say that in use, the 350D performs extremely well. It turns on almost instantly, wakes up almost instantly, has an imperceptible shutter delay, and feels fast and snappy in use. This is a huge improvement over my older Canon 10D. In addition, uploading pictures over the USB cable is noticeably faster than the 10D. Shooting continuously, it can do approximately 3 frames per second for 14 JPEG images in a row or 4 RAW images in a row. In use, the camera is moderately quiet- the shutter is definitely quieter than the rather noisy Canon 20D, but, slightly louder than the Canon 10D. “

DCResource have published their review of the new Nikon D70s DSLR camera.
“Overall I highly recommend the Nikon D70s to anyone who wants a well built, high performance digital SLR from a company with a huge collection of lenses. If you already have Nikkor lenses than the D70s is a no-brainer. If you’re just starting out things get a little more difficult. The Canon EOS-20D costs a lot more but is definitely a better camera in almost every way. The Rebel XT costs about the same and offers more a higher resolution sensor, USB 2.0 High Speed support, more advanced white balance controls, and an optional battery grip. At the same time it feels a lot cheaper in the hand, something which bothered me quite a bit.”

ImagingResource have published their review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“The Canon Digital Rebel XT builds on the huge success of the original Digital Rebel, a camera that literally turned the digital camera world on its ear when it was first introduced. A six-megapixel digital SLR that sold with a lens for less than $1,000, the Digital Rebel not only challenged Nikon, Olympus, and Fuji in the D-SLR business, but promised to cut drastically into the all-in-one “prosumer” market. Borrowing its name from their highly popular “Rebel” line of entry-level film SLRs, the Digital Rebel offered many of the same exposure features and improvements as the 10D, but slightly scaled back to keep costs under control and to provide some differentiation between the Rebel and its higher-priced sibling.”

DigitalCameraInfo have published their review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“Initially unveiled at PMA 2005, roughly a year and a half after its predecessor, the Canon Digital Rebel XT appears to be a real winner. Offering strong image quality, rapid shooting and processing speeds, and the ability to apply a range of Canon and independent lenses in a compressed package, the XT should have a wide appeal. Canon seems to have corrected the majority of the flaws apparent in the Original EOS Digital Rebel, with the only remaining question concerning the feel of the body. As with the original Digital Rebel, the XT is again formed out of an extremely lightweight polycarbonate, retaining the same consumer-grade frailty that forced some to denounce it as amateur. Although meager to some, the compact frame will unquestionably be an asset to other users, as the 17.1 oz. Rebel XT, currently the lightest digital SLR on the market, offers the portability of a compact camera, with the performance and flexibility provided by a prosumer grade model.”

DIWA member e-fotografija have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“The EOS 350D is a camera that is a pleasure to use for hobby photographers. Unfortunately there is still no DSLR camera under 500EUR, I expect that to happen by the end of this year, so there’s no cheap alternative to upgrade to a higher class. Here’s something to remember. If you are an advanced photographer and shoot a lot of photos, the EOS 350D can only be a camera to step into the digital world or a back-up camera. Don’t think that the EOS 350D, despite many improvements over the EOS 300D, is in the same range as is the EOS 20D. The EOS 350D is much clumsier. Focusing, metering and speed of workflow are much better on the EOS 20D. It is just the same as is with film cameras.”

AnandTech have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“There is no doubt about it. The Canon EOS 350D is incredibly impressive for an entry-level digital SLR. In virtually all of our tests, it performed on par with its older and more expensive prosumer brother - the Canon EOS 20D. One of the biggest performance upgrades from the original digital rebel is the DIGIC II image processor. The DIGIC II processor provides the 350D with blazing fast processing speed and very low-noise images. In our timing tests, the 350D proved to be just as fast as the 20D, which is leaps and bounds faster than the original DRebel (300D). It has a remarkable startup time of 0.31 sec and, of course, shutter lag is of no concern.”

DigitalCameraReview have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“In the end, the Digital Rebel XT is a quality camera with more than enough flexibility to keep a large majority of consumers happy as well as professionals. Canon poised the XT to help recapture the market share of dSLRs lost to Nikon’s excellent D70 which captured 40% of dSLR sales (according to Nikon that is). The XT is a major upgrade from the Digital Rebel in just about every aspect, but it is not a large downgrade from the EOS-20D. In this respect, it seems that Canon and Nikon will lead the dSLR revolution at this pace… and it will be interesting when Nikon reveals the D50 and D70s and how these compare to Canon’s current lineup (The paper specs from Nikon look fantastic however)!”

This processor is used by Canon on a broad range and it certainly pays off. The Canon 350D’s responses under various circumstances are incredibly impressive. PCMagazine have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“Where we found the Rebel XT to be a leader was in picture quality. In our simulated daylight still-life test photo, we found very little noise at ISO 100 and virtually no fringing. Even as we went up the ISO scale to 800 and 1,600, the slight increase in noise didn’t distract from the quality of the photo; it appeared more like grain than noise. The real strengths of the daylight shot were its vivid color (despite the image being slightly underexposed), excellent detail, and wide dynamic range, which lent the still life a sense of weight.”

DCViews have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“The Canon Digital rebel XT is available in silver or in black (default). Which of these you prefer is down to personal preference, although we would choose the black version as it gives the camera more of a pro appearance. Physically the camera is quite a bit smaller and lighter than the older 300D. In fact it’s almost exactly the same size as the extremely compact Pentax *istDS which we tested earlier. Everything seems to be well put together without any rattles or free play in the camera or its controls. The handgrip on the right is ideal for people with smaller hands, although the lack of space between the grip and the lens mount might pose problems for those with bigger hands and fingers. If you plan to use the Digital rebel XT with longer and consequently heavier lenses, the relatively small hand grip may prove insufficient and you may find that the hard rubber finish on the grip doesn’t help much here either. To make sure that the rebel XT is for you, we would advise you to try it out for size before you buy one.”

Steves Digicams have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“Overall, the XT’s AF system was very effective, producing consistently sharp results. It was also quite flexible, allowing not only a choice of AF modes, but the selection of AF points (7) as well. The XT’s AF system performed well in dim lighting conditions, and effectively uses its pop-up flash as an AF illuminator when necessary. Although it is not quite as responsive and does not provide as many AF points as the 20D, the XT’s AF system easily handles most shooting conditions. Its responsiveness, flexibility and accuracy also distinguish the XT from high-end prosumer digicams.”

“All things considered I’d say that the Canon Digital Rebel XT is the entry-level digital SLR to beat at this point in time. It offers nearly all of the features of the more expensive EOS-20D but for hundreds less. My biggest complaints are the soft images, especially using the kit lens at smaller apertures, and some build quality gripes that I’ll get into later. creativepro have published a review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“While the lighter weight is good news, the XT’s smaller size is more of a liability. To make the camera narrower, Canon squished the hand grip closer to the lens barrel, leaving little space for the fingers of your right hand. Any handling of the camera—picking it up, changing lenses, passing it from hand to hand—feels more difficult, less comfortable, and less secure than with the older, larger Rebel, because it’s harder to get your fingers wrapped around the grip. If you regularly shoot in climates cold enough to warrant gloves, take your gloves to the camera store and try shooting with camera before buying.”

“Canon’s EOS 350D Digital (Digital Rebel XT in the US) combines ease of use, a robust design, and many of the same compelling technologies found in Canon’s professional series EOS cameras, making it an excellent camera for the money. Image quality is up slightly on its predecessor thanks to a new CMOS sensor and improved DIGIC image processing, its high-ISO performance was impressive, and its low shutter lag and nearly instant power on time will prove popular for impulsive snappers. Gordon Laing has published a detailed review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“The prospect of upgrading a camera which is less than two years old can be a bitter pill to swallow, and if you’re happy with your 300D or 10D, then our best advice is to stick with it. Sure, the extra two megapixels on the 350D are nice to have, but unless you’re making very large prints or tight crops, you won’t notice much difference. Similarly, the smaller dimensions and weight of the 350D may be welcomed by most photographers, but unless you’re an avid climber or walker who values every ounce, you could probably live with your old camera.”

DPReview have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“So it’s clear, the EOS 350D is a great successor to the EOS 300D, it puts right many user complaints, it delivers a smaller and lighter camera which feels better put together and delivers an increase in resolution. Image quality is just as good as the more expensive EOS 20D, if you can live with the differences between the two the money saved could buy you a very nice lens. The upgrade decision for existing EOS 300D owners is definitely more difficult, the increase in resolution from six to eight megapixels really isn’t that significant but some of the new features, improved performance and reduction size and weight are.”

“The Canon EOS 350D Digital Rebel XT’s color LCD is 1.8” - the same as the 20D. A histogram + image is optionally available with image review (the histogram displays a graph of the brightness of each pixel). It is very useful for determining if the exposure was correctly determined. Unfortunately, the size of both the image review and the histogram is very tiny in this mode. There is no top LCD, but a mono LCD is included on the back for settings display (sans ISO). Incidentally, my 350D sometimes skips a picture when using the Cross Keys for image review navigation. “

DIWA member Steves Digicams have published their initial impressions of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR camera.
“It Many of the feature advancements and innovations on the EOS Digital Rebel XT digital camera are inherited from its EOS 20D “prosumer big brother.” Both cameras employ a Canon 8-megapixel, high resolution color CMOS image sensor, and provide the same effective angle of view, equivalent to 1.6 x the normal EF lens focal length. The consumer looking only at the fact that they are both 8-megapixel SLRs might not easily see the real differences between these two cameras. The 20D offers faster continuous shooting (5 frames-per-second (fps) vs. 3 fps) with a larger burst capability (23 frames vs. 14), more custom settings (18 vs. 9) and a rugged magnesium body. The Rebel XT was created for those migrating to digital that don’t want to lose the power or flexibility of a SLR system, but can’t justify the $600 higher price of the EOS 20D.”

Photo.net have published their initial impressions of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR camera.
“It looks very much like the image quality of the Digital Rebel XT is up to that of the EOS 20D. It’s also evident from using the Digital Rebel, that it’s a Rebel, i.e. a camera aimed at the consumer entry level, while the 20D is clearly aimed at the more experienced and serious photographer. Ultimately in many respects the cameras will be capable of yielding almost identical results, it’s just that doing it with the 20D will be a little easier. Of course there are things the Digital Rebel doesn’t do as well. It has a slower frame rate, a smaller JPEG image buffer, a lower capacity battery, the AF system is different and, as mentioned, the viewfinder is smaller. However for many people saving $400-$500 will make up for all those things. Personally, I’d buy the 20D, but that’s just me. Many people will buy the Digital Rebel XT and be very happy with it.”

“Now, I’ve placed this camera into the hands of several women, and they all love it. I can see why, as several of the women who have smaller hands have no trouble finding a comfortable home for their thumb, palm, and fingers; just like it was made for them. Even my wife, whose hands aren’t that much smaller than mine, really liked the grip, and the Digital Rebel XT’s light weight, button arrangement, and overall feel were just right (she was fairly familiar with our Digital Rebel, by the way, so this is an informed opinion).”

Luminous Landscape have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“Let me put this as delicately as possible. The viewfinder of the 350XT is small. How small? Very small. It is one of the smallest viewfinders that I’ve ever seen. As Mike Johnston put it in a recent column, when talking about the small viewfinders that we are seeing in the latest generation of reduced frame and reduced cost DSLRs, it’s like looking at a postage stamp at the end of a tunnel. Having said that, it’s still better than any electronic viewfinder that I’ve ever seen. These are like looking at a fuzzy TV at the end of a long tunnel. “

Central to the release is the support of RAW files from the recently released Canon EOS Rebel XT/350D. Pixmantec are dedicated to providing timely support for all new DSLRs from the major manufacturers and the early support for the much awaited Rebel XT/350D clearly demonstrates their commitment. Additional functionality provided by the update includes support for the Windows 2000 operating system in addition to general enhancements to workflow, quality and hardware compatibility.
Since its release at PMA on February 20th 2005, RawShooter essentials 2005 has seen an unprecedented number of downloads. User feedback has been extremely positive with the majority of users supporting the claim that the software produces the best quality output on the market today.
It seems that the price of the new Tamron SP AF11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 Di-II LD Aspherical (IF), a new high performance ultra wideangle zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras using APS-C size image sensors, will be $981.95 in the USA. That’s a lot higher than the $550 price that I was told by a Tamron rep at PMA last month, and a lot nearer to the price of the Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens. Have Tamron pitched too high - will all the Canon, Nikon and Konica Minolta owners out there choose the Tamron as their wide-angle lens, or the Sigma 10-20mm (price to be confirmed)? I’m guessing that owners of the Canon EOS 20D and Digital Rebel DSLRs will opt for the Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens instead…
Thanks to Simon Heard for letting me know.
Meanwhile, take a look at some exclusive sample shots and my initial thoughts on the new Tamron 11-18mm lens.
The PMA Show 2005 was held last week in Orlando, Florida. PhotographyBLOG was there for an entire week to cover the show, attend various press events and go on the rides at the Universal Studios “Islands of Adventure” theme park (I can’t work all the time you know…). All in all the Show was a quiet, understated affair compared to previous years, with the general concensus being this was a year of consolidation in the industry, rather than innovation. There were still a lot of new products introduced, however, so here is my personal roundup of the hits, misses and maybes.

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT is undoubtedly the star of PMA 2005 show (called the Canon EOS 350D in Europe). An 8 megapixel digital SLR with the same DIGIC II image processor found in Canon’s professional series D-SLR cameras, the Digital Rebel XT is an amazing upgrade of the already very popular Canon Digital Rebel. Build-quality is better than you may imaging, certainly a lot better than the original Rebel, but not as good as the higher-end EOS 20D. The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT also even smaller than the previous model, although not to small for my large hand size. The popularity of the Digital Rebel XT at PMA and also after the show will no doubt be helped by the lack of any new comparative DLSR from Nikon, whose stand here is noticeably smaller than Canon’s. The Canon EOS 350D will cost £750 when it launches in the UK in March.

Canon EOS 350D is announced today. The EOS 350D (called the EOS Digital Rebel XT in the USA) is an updated version of the popular Canon EOS 300D DSLR. The EOS 350D Digital features a new APS-C size 8 Megapixel CMOS sensor. The Canon EOS 350D is powered by the same DIGIC II image processor found in Canon’s professional series D-SLR cameras. The EOS 350D features 3 frames per second, 14 frame burst operation, USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface, simultaneous RAW and Large JPEG writing and 0.2 second start up time. The Canon EOS 350D will cost £749.99 and be available in March.

Epson Stylus Photo R1800 has been announced today by Epson UK. The R1800 is an A3 version of the Epson Stylus Photo R800 that I reviewed last year, featuring the same 8 colour UltraChrome Hi-Gloss inks and 1.5 picoliter droplet size. The Stylus Photo R1800 will retail in the UK for £399.99 inc Vat and $549.99 in the USA. As the older Epson Stylus Photo 2100 currently costs over £400, this sounds like a bargain to me (especially as I paid over £500 for the Epson 2100 in early 2004!).

Creativepro.com have published a review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
“The most noticeable change in image quality with the 20D (in addition to increased resolution) is more-aggressive default settings. Following in the footsteps of the Rebel, the 20D comes pre-configured to perform a little more sharpening than the 10D, and its images consequently receive a boost in contrast. The camera comes equipped with a number of parameter sets, and it’s easy enough to change and customize them to yield images with more or less processing.”

If you have recently bought one of Canon’s DSLRs, like the Digital Rebel (also called the EOS 300D) or the new, flying off the shelves like hotcakes EOS 20D, then you will be very interested in Bob Atkin’s great overview of Canon lenses.
“This review is for the new users. The assumption is that they don’t want to spend $7000 on an EF 600/4L IS USM, and indeed they probably don’t even want to spend $1150 on an EF 300/4L IS USM. I’ve chosen a series of lenses which the new user might be most interested in. These are mostly zooms and mostly priced in the $200-$400 range. I’ve avoided recommending most of the low end, plastic mount, inexpensive lenses normally sold with Rebel series bodies because, quite frankly, they aren’t all that good.”

Bob Atkins has published a great overview of compact flash cards from a Canon DSLR point of view, including the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D (pictured).
“As you can see, it really doesn’t matter much what speed CF card you use with the Digital Rebel or EOS 10D. The camera really can’t write faster than about 1.4MB/s no matter what the CF card speed is. Faster cards do give slightly better performance, but the difference is small. On the other hand, the EOS 20D and EOS 1Ds mark II can write much faster and can take more advantage of high speed cards. With these cameras the use of faster CF cards makes much more difference.”

Bob Atkins has published an interesting translation of an interview with one of the Canon directors, Mr. Iwashita, with Bob’s personal viewpoint interweaved into the interview text. It doens’t contain very good news if you are one of the people that wish Canon would release a digital version of their popular EOS 3 film SLR:
“It seems that Canon are currently happy with the 3 tier system of DSLRs, the consumer level Digital Rebel, the “prosumer” level EOS 20D and the pro level EOS 1D mark II and 1Ds mark II. There are no current plans to introduce a digital version of the EOS 3. The current 3 tiers don’t really compete with each other and sales are good. There’s no reason to add a 4th level between the 20D and 1D models.”

Connected Home Media have reviewed the Canon EOS 300D digital SLR.
“The Canon EOS Digital Rebel ($999) is a fabulous camera for photographers who desire more than the basics. If you have the time and inclination and curiosity to explore the myriad capabilities of this striking piece of equipment, I think you?ll find that very few cameras at this price point can match the professional image quality and sheer usability of the Digital Rebel. Best of all, in my testing of the Rebel, I found that I could swap out the included 18-55mm lens and affix my old lenses, meaning this is a camera that gives me the best of SLR functionality in the digital realm.”

DO LABS RELEASES DXO OPTICS PRO SOFTWARE THROUGH E-STORE OPENING MAY 24TH
Breakthrough software application for serious photographers boosts image quality of digital cameras and lenses
Paris, France (May 11, 2004) - DO Labs, a software company focused on applied mathematics for image enhancement, announces the availability of DxO Optics Pro - its revolutionary software solution for dramatically improving digital image quality.
Designed for use by professional and discerning amateur photographers, DxO Optics Pro software delivers genuine and perceptible quality improvements by automatically correcting images for the following major optical faults:
- Distortion
- Vignetting*
- Blur (lack of sharpness)
- Lateral chromatic aberration
The modular design of DxO Optics Pro allows photographers to maximize performance of their existing and future equipment. In particular, DxO Optics Pro optimizes image quality when shooting conditions are difficult: wide aperture, extreme focal lengths on zooms, lowlight, image edges, wide format sensors, etc? Traditional compromises no longer apply with DxO Optics Pro, photographers can now take full advantage of the possibilities their expensive digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras and lenses offer.
Bob Atkins over at Photo.net has just posted his review of the Canon EOS 300D.
“The Digital Rebel is an excellent camera at a remarkably low price given the cost of other DSLRs. No doubt prices will drop further and cameras will improve over the next few years, but right now the Digital Rebel sets a price/performance standard that’s hard to beat. It’s clearly better and more versatile than similarly priced non SLR digicams in the same price range, though it may be slightly larger and you do have to buy lenses for it.”
Website: Photo.net - Canon EOS 300D Review
Photo.net have just reviewed the Canon EF-S 18-55/3.5-5.6, which ships as part of a kit with the Canon EOS 300D / Digital Rebel and can only be used on that digital SLR camera.
“The 18-55/3.5-5.6 is a very good lens for $100. It’s weaknesses show up at the ends of its zoom range (18mm and 55mm), especially in the corners of the frame when used wide open where resolution and contrast can be rather poor. To get decent sharpness in the corners requires stopping to f8 at 18mm or f11 at 55mm - but you still won’t get the same image quality as you would from a a prime or “L” series zoom lens. In the mid range (28mm), performance is pretty good at both center and edge. For a cheap, plastic mount, low end consumer lens, the 18-55 is certainly better than I would have expected.”

Bob Atkins has published a useful overview of the differences between the Canon EOS 10D and Canon EOS 300D digital SLRs, and tries to answer the question “Which one should you choose?”.
“Overall the 10D is a more professional camera, with features lacking on the digital Rebel (EOS 300D). Both use the same 6.3 megapixel size sensor, in fact they both probably use the same sensor, so assuming you use the same lens and the same exposure on both bodies, you should get images of equal quality. But of course you can say exactly the same thing about the Rebel and EOS 1v film bodies and there aren’t too many people torn for choice between those two!”

The US magazine Popular Photography have just published their review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.
“Our first impression is that this camera is far more than a “light” version of the D100, as many have nicknamed Canon’s EOS Digital Rebel when compared to the more expensive EOS 10D. On the one hand, the D70’s durable body construction is similar to the D100 and Digital Rebel, with a stainless-steel chassis surrounded by a polycarbonate body, and a stainless-steel lensmount. It’s smaller and easier to grip than the D100, and, at 1.3 pounds, the D70 body weighs about the same as the Digital Rebel. But with a lens attached, the D70 feels more solid and well-balanced.”

DPReview have just published a comprehensive review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.
“Shortly after Canon announced the EOS 300D (Digital Rebel) and it made its way into reviewers hands it was fairly clear that Canon were offering a formidable package at an excellent price which would be the mark for affordable digital SLR’s of the future, with image quality almost identical to the EOS 10D and a sub-$1000 price it caused a significant ripple in the market. Now however it’s clear that Nikon were well aware of this and had the D70 up their sleeve, a camera which is a significant step ahead of the EOS 300D in terms of build quality and feature set and a match, and in some instances better from an image quality point of view.”

Canon’s “EOS Digital Rebel/EOS Kiss/EOS 300D” digital SLR has sold so well that Canon have recently raised production by 25%, according to a report on Yahoo! News via Reuters:
“Ando said Canon had completed plans to boost monthly production capacity of the “EOS Kiss” by about 25 percent to 100,000 cameras in the first quarter of this year. Half of that capacity is housed in a Taiwan plant and the other half in Japan.
Canon sold 600,000 digital SLRs in 2003, capturing 70 percent of the rapidly growing market and leaving Nikon Corp (7731.T), which did not have a camera anywhere near the “EOS Kiss” model’s price range, in second place with 30 percent.”
Even more interestingly, Canon spokesman Tadaaki Ando, deputy group executive in charge of digital SLRs, strongly hinted that an even cheaper DSLR will be released in about a year’s time:
“Canon’s Ando said a lower-priced digital SLR could be about one year away.
“If it’s not this autumn, then that would probably mean next spring,” Ando said, noting the release would then be one-and-a-half years after the original “EOS Kiss.” “Development times are so much faster than they were in the film age.”

Steves Digicams has announced that its “Most Important Camera of 2003 Award” has gone to the Canon EOS 300D DSLR:
“There were many excellent cameras produced and sold during 2003 but in terms of the one that had the greatest impact on the market we feel the Digital Rebel was clearly the standout camera.”
Website: Steves Digicams - Most Important Camera of 2003 Award
Professional fine-art photographer Alain Briot has had a new article published on the Luminous Landscape Website, discussing a recent trip to Paris with the Canon EOS 300D DLSR camera.
“In December 2003 and January 2004 I spent two weeks photographing in Paris. I took along with me my trusty Linhof Master Teknica 4x5, my Fuji 645zi medium format, and my just-acquired Canon 300D “digital rebel” camera. Yes, a digital camera, and an entry-model at that! Let’s see how these 3 different cameras performed, or interfaced, in a large-city environment.”
Website: Luminous Landscape - A Rebel in Paris
The latest issue of the monthly online photo magazine, Vivid Light Photography, has just been published. Highlights this month include a review of the Canon EOS 300D:
“The other misconception is that the Digital Rebel is just an EOS 10D in a plastic body. That’s like saying a Subaru WRX STi is the same as an Imprezza; hell, they look similar don’t they? Yes, the DR has a plastic body, but that’s as much of the statement is true. Let’s look at the similarities: they have the same imaging chip and similar electronics, so the image quality should be as good as the 10D and when using both cameras back to back, I haven’t noticed any difference in image quality.”
and an article called David vs. Goliath which compares consumer lenses with pro lenses:
“These are both quality lenses but they are aimed at two very different types of shooters. The trick is to figure our which type you are and buy the right lens.
The amateur who buys the 80-200mm will soon tire of hauling around its bulk and the lens will start spending more time in the drawer than on the camera. Likewise the pro who buys the 70-300mm will be frustrated by its autofocus speed and will likely damage the lens at some point through hard use. “

DO Labs Press Release 30/01/04
Breakthrough Software Application for Digital SLR Camera Users
Eliminates Blur, Distortion, Chromatic Aberration And Vignetting
Las Vegas, NV (February 12, 2004) ? DO Labs, a software company focused on research in image processing to enhance image quality, today announces DxO Optics Pro, a revolutionary software solution designed for professional and expert photographers. DxO Optics Pro delivers genuine and perceptible quality improvements by automatically correcting images for:
- Distortion
- Chromatic aberrations
- Vignetting
- Blur (lack of perceived sharpness)
“Isn’t it frustrating that the more you pay for high-end digital cameras or lenses, the more you feel their limitations?” asks Jerome Meniere, CEO of DO Labs. “The brighter a lens, the softer it is wide open, the wider the range of a zoom lens, the greater the distortion, the higher resolution the sensor is, the more visible chromatic aberration becomes. DxO Optics PRO will help demanding photographers get the best possible image quality from their equipment, at any settings”
“DxO Optics Pro can be thought of as a ‘software corrective lens’ for your DSLR,” explains Dr. Guichard, DO Labs? Chief Scientist. “We have created objective, laboratory-grade precise mathematical models of each fault, and developed fully automatic algorithms to remedy them”.

Photo.net have published the results of their Digital Camera of the Year poll. No prizes for guessing which camera won…
“In first place was the 6.3 MP Canon EOS 300D (Digital Rebel). It captured 43% of the total vote, almost twice as much as the second placed camera. Though not the “best” or most technologically advanced digital camera, the 300D was the first digital SLR to break the $1000 barrier and it sold for about $500 less than its nearest cost competitor. In fact when sold with its companion 18-55mm lens it still sold for less than some non-SLR digicams. The EOS 300D was the camera that brought DSLRs to the masses. People who had never before owned an SLR bought this camera - and they are still buying it. It’s the only SLR I’ve seen advertised on network TV recently too!”

PTN Announces Top Photo and Imaging Products of the Year; Leading Imaging Products Help to Determine Photographic Technology Future
[Business Wire]
Business Wire via NewsEdge Corporation : MELVILLE, N.Y.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Dec. 11, 2003—If you haven’t yet purchased that digital camera, camcorder, home printer, cell phone or even a single-use camera for someone special for the holidays, don’t take another step until you look at what the experts have chosen as their top products of 2003. Photo Trade News (PTN), the number one business journal in the photo imaging industry, recently unveiled its Top Photo and Imaging Products of the Year as voted on by its thousands of photo trade retailers who are asked to rate the products that created the most consumer excitement throughout the year and impacted their bottom line.
Not surprisingly, the Top Product Overall for five years in a row was a digital camera. The Canon EOS Digital Rebel not only took top honors, but it also claimed the top spot for the Digital SLR category. With details like a highly responsive autofocus and Continuous Shooting Mode which allows users to capture split-second action sequences at 2.5 fps with a 4-shot burst, it’s easy to see what draws buyers.
The Pentax Optio S4 and Olympus Stylus Digital 300/400 tied in the Consumer Digicam category, both offering similar opportunities to capture great photographs.
“Because the winners are chosen by the photo trade industry, honorees are acknowledged by the group responsible for selling their product,” says Cygnus Imaging Group Publisher Kathy Schneider. “Being selected essentially lets the manufacturer know that they are succeeding and their retailers are happy.”
Canon’s entire line of camcorders was selected as a Top Product and it was Fuji’s line of one-time-use-cameras that retailers found to be the best seller. Epson claimed first and second spots for home printers with their Stylus Photo 925 a close second to their Stylus Photo 2200. If you’re searching for the top cell phone, look no further than Motorola’s product line.
“We’re seeing more technology-based imaging solutions and products scoring fairly high,” says PTN Publisher Liz Vickers. “The photo industry is being revolutionized with items like this year’s Overall Technology winner Graphx Photogize which gives consumers a fast and easy way to send digital photos from their home PC to the local photo retailer, for same day print fulfillment. Only a decade ago, we couldn’t even imagine such innovations.”
For a complete list of PTN’s Top Photo and Imaging Product winners and runners-up, log onto Imaging-info.com. Photo Trade News (PTN) magazine reaches 12,500 imaging industry retailers primarily through the photo specialty, minilab, consumer electronic drugstore and computer channels. The magazine is published 12 times per year and is currently in its 67th year of successfully covering the photo trade industry.
Photoxels have today published their review of the Canon EOS 300D digital SLR camera.
“The EOS Digital Rebel simply bests the best of the prosumer digital cameras with its excellent resolution, virtually noise-free images at high ISOs, low-light capability, virtually no shutter lag for fast response times, excellent AF, easy to use dedicated buttons for less reliance on the MENU, and an attractive and affordable price point.
It should appeal to serious amateur photographers who are willing to put forth the effort to learn and master its capabilities, as well as to advanced amateur photographers who appreciate its excellent image quality and fast response times.”

DCViews have posted their review of the Canon EOS 300D / Digital Rebel, with a lot of sample photos to look at.
“Canon have done it again. After releasing the first of many IXUS/ELPH models a few years ago and improving them with each succeeding model, they then produced the EOS D30. A groundbreaking digital SLR, which was followed shortly after by the D60 and 10D, two digital SLRs that really showed the world what Canon was capable of. Now they have again astonished everyone, including the competition, by releasing a truly affordable consumer digital SLR camera. First impressions may deceive but if the camera’s good looks and advanced specifications are anything to go by, we are sure the 300D will be a winner from the start.”

CNET have just published their review of the Canon EOS 300D / Digital Rebel.
“It’s tempting to think of Canon’s EOS Digital Rebel (known outside the United States as the 300D) as a light version of the EOS 10D. But luckily for consumers, the Rebel is more of a middleweight champion, delivering slightly scaled-back performance but similar high-quality, 6.3-megapixel images and most of the 10D’s capabilities. And like its pricier brother, the Rebel combines automatic functions—which enable almost anyone to use it right out of the box—with most of the shooting features serious amateurs want. But the Rebel does it all at the lowest price we’ve yet seen for an interchangeable-lens dSLR.”
Website: CNET - Canon EOS 300D Review
Canon have released a new version of firmware for the Canon EOS 300D / Digital Rebel DSLR.
Firmware Version 1.1.1 resolves the following issues:
- It increases the reliability of RemoteCapture application when the camera is used. The reliability of RemoteCapture, with which you can control the camera from your computer and take single-frame shots, timer shots and interval timer shots and save the images on your computer automatically, is increased.
- It increases the reliability of operations when used on Windows XP and Mac OS X with [PTP]* selected in [Communication]. It increases the operations with the camera when connected and disconnected with your computer in saving and deleting the images. You may now make a continuous printing of up to 100 images at one time.
This firmware Version 1.1.1 can only be installed on cameras with Version 1.0.2 firmware. If the camera already has the firmware Version 1.1.1 installed, you do not need to update it.

The new RAW convertor software Capture One DSLR Rebel Edition, which is specifically designed for the Canon EOS 300D/Rebel digital SLR, is now available for the bargain introductory price of just $29 from the PictureFlow website. If you have a Canon EOS 300D and use RAW files, this may be the best $29 that you ever spend on your digital camera…

Digital Outback Photo have posted an extensive preview of the new RAW convertor software, Capture One DSLR Rebel Edition, which is specifically designed for the Canon EOS 300D/Rebel digital SLR. I personally use Capture One DSLR LE with my EOS 10D, in preference to the software that Canon provides - it’s a lot faster and easy to use and well worth the $99 price tag.
“If you want to get the best quality out of your EOS 300D you need to use the raw file format (read our Shutterbug article to understand why). Unfortunately the Canon File Viewer Utility is not a very useable raw converter. This is not real problem as Capture One DSLR Rebel Edition provides a first class solution at only $49.”

Digital Outback Photo have added another new section to their Canon EOS 300D Experience Report. This time they look at selecting lenses to use with the 300D and some of the things that you should consider.
“What about fixed primes?
Fixed primes always get you the best quality for your money. But of course they are not as flexible as zooms. Also the old saying that you should move your body and not the range on your zoom is not always valid as there are situations where you have few choices to move your vantage point. Last not least switching lenses can introduce more dust to your sensor.”

DCResource have completed their review of the Canon EOS 300D, adding test photos and a conclusion to their earlier first look at the camera. Like everyone else, they only have positive things to say about the 300D:
“Based on the pages of text above, you probably don’t need to hear my conclusion. But I’ll repeat it anyway: the Canon Digital Rebel is a breakthrough product, bringing the digital SLR to the masses. I must confess that my level interest in the Minolta A1 and Sony DSC-F828 dropped immediately after the announcement of the Rebel. Many will ask, “why spend $1199 on a fixed lens camera when I get get a D-SLR and choose from scores of lenses and accessories for $899?” That will be a tough decision for many people over the holiday shopping season!”

Luminous Landscape owner Michael Reichmann has just published his review of the Canon EOS 300D digital SLR. Find out how the EOS 300D fared in the hands of an experienced professional landscape and wildlife photographer.
“Rather than provide a bells and whistles review, which sites like DPReview do with mind-numbing detail, it’s my intention here to see how well the Rebel accomplishes its goals, both from the consumer’s as well as Canon’s perspectives. Of course I will be comparing the Rebel to Canon’s 10D, which from an image quality perspective is almost identical, yet which costs nearly twice as much.”

photoworkshop.com has launched the Canon Digital Learning Centre, which is “specially designed to help you maximise the potential of Canon’s new EOS Digital Rebel” Each month a new set of Lessons will be posted which aim to give you a better understanding of the camera and photography in general (found via A-Digital-Eye.com).
Here’s a typical excerpt from Lesson 5, Picturing People:
“Having a choice of many different shooting modes (the Digital Rebel offers 12) gives you maximum flexibility and lots of creativity when it comes to taking people pictures. The modes let you control many camera functions ? including the auto focus mode, frame advance, exposure, metering pattern and flash ? to create the kind of picture you see in your mind?s eye.”
Website: photoworkshop.com - Canon Digital Rebel Lessons
The camera is not even on sale yet, but Short Courses have still been able to publish a new 120 page guide to the Canon EOS 300D/Rebel. The printed version costs $24.95, or you can get an e-book version for $19.95.
“A Short Courses digital photography book for people who own the Canon EOS Digital Rebel digital camera and want to get better pictures. This beautifully written and illustrated guide, drawing on the much more comprehensive information on the ShortCourses Web site, pulls together answers to the questions you might have about using the Digital Rebel.”

Digital Outback Photo are currently testing the Canon EOS 300D with the EF-S 18-55mm lens. They have started to publish their review in the form of a diary, so make sure to check back for their latest thoughts.
“In terms of the camera features the Rebel is very basic and looks cheap (e.g. silver body). But handling and build quality is much better than this might sound. You cannot save weight, size and money and still expect a professional camera. We will actually buy a 300D as a backup camera.”

Continuing the lens theme this morning, Bob Atkins has written an article aimed at new owners of the Canon EOS 300D and 10D DSLRs. The catchily-named “A review of lenses for the Canon EOS 300D and EOS 10D Digital SLRs” does exactly what it says on the tin.
Website: Photo.net: Canon EOS 300D/10D Lens Review
Digital Outback Photo have published a report of the one hour that they recently spent using the Canon EOS 300D. There are a few sample photos taken with the new EF-S 18-55mm lens, and some early observations about the general handling of the camera. Essential reading for everyone who has pre-ordered the 300D!
“The Digital Rebel with the new EF-S 18-55mm lens feels light. This is meant in a positive sense that you want to carry this camera more often with you than a 10D or even a 1Ds.
The time today was way to short to find out about the quality of the new EF-S 18-55mm lens. But as far as we can see in these sample shots this is a very useable lens.”

Rob Galbraith has posted a pretty thorough comparison of the main differences in functionality between the new Canon EOS 300D (known as the Rebel in the US) and the EOS 10D. If you’ve read and re-read all of the information from yesterday’s launch, and you’re still wondering what the similarities and differences between the 2 cameras are, then Rob’s site is a good place to start.
Here’s one major difference that might influence you towards the 10D:
“The Digital Rebel incorporates the same 7-point autofocus module as the 10D, and is promised to have the same overall autofocus performance too. There’s one significant difference, however: the Digital Rebel doesn’t allow for the selection of AF mode. While you can choose between manual focus and autofocus (by flipping the AF/M switch on any Canon EF lens), in the exposure modes of most use to serious shooters - Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, Program and Manual - the Digital Rebel chooses between One Shot AF and AI Servo AF automatically on the fly, in a mode called AI Focus. If you’d prefer to choose one or the other yourself, then you’ll need a different camera.”
You can click the image above to view the Canon 300D and 10D side-by-side; as you can see, the 300D is noticeably smaller than its big brother. It would be interesting to see a similar comparison with the Pentax *ist D…
