16x DVD-R and DVD+R First New Sony Products to Feature AccuCORE Technology
PARK RIDGE, N.J., Dec. 20, 2004 - Sony Electronics today announced a new development in recordable DVD media with the introduction of AccuCORE™ technology, delivering an enhanced level of recording accuracy, compatibility and reliability.
Sony’s new 16x DVD-R and DVD+R media will mark the first new product introductions to feature AccuCORE, which will also be implemented in the company’s 8x recordable DVD products.
Consumers recording on discs with AccuCORE technology are expected to appreciate five key benefits: wider compatibility for DVD-R and DVD+R recordings with various types of drives or recorders at various speeds; faster addressing of the DVD-R format in high-speed dubbing and time-shift playback applications; stable writing capabilities for both DVD-R and DVD+R formats through reduced disc vibrations at high speeds; greater temperature adaptability for optimal performance during extended burning processes for all (DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW) formats; and improved archival reliability for long-term storage, also for all formats.
Not to be mistaken for the RD-1 from Epson, the unique R-1 film camera from inventor Clifford Ross is capable of taking photos that have “100 times as much data as the average professional digital camera” using film negatives. Ross’s camera is capable of resolving amazing levels of detail - apparently a tree on a ridge four miles away is sharply focused.
“The camera, called the R-1 (R for Ross), looks oddly rigged, like something out of Dr. Seuss, and almost like an antique viewfinder camera on legs. In fact, Ross pulls a cloth over his head and the back of his contraption when he takes a picture. But with this camera that he concocted out of 60-year-old camera parts, mirrors, a microscope and other items—none of them digital—Ross has taken photographs on 9-by-18-inch negatives that when slowly processed by hand and digitally scanned contain 100 times as much data as the average professional digital camera.”

Rollei R3- Monochrome Film in Rollei Quality
Rollei present themselves as “The new Rollei” offering an impressive line of digital cameras and attractive new products all around bits and bytes. However, they have not lost sight of the company’s tradition. Proof of this are, among other things, twin-lens reflex cameras such as the Rolleiflex 4.0 FW, going back to the type of camera that made Rollei world-famous.
Not going back to Rollei’s own tradition, but to the tradition of photography is a new line of products which Rollei present at the 2004 photokina: Exclusive high-end monochrome film designed to attract attention in a world flooded with color.
The new Rollei R3 film will be available in all sizes, from 35mm to 120 roll film and 8x10” sheet film. Both professionals and discriminating amateurs will find it ideal for optimum tonal control and images with perfectly rendered, subtle tones of gray.
Film speed is variable from ISO 25 to ISO 6400, allowing the material to be used in practically any light. This is made possible by a multilayer design with cubic silver-halide crystals of different size embedded in the various layers. Spectral sensitivity also covers a wide range from orthochromatic to panchromatic right into the infrared.

Actiontec Introduces the First Wireless Digital Media Player With Eight-In-One Reader for Portable Memory Cards
LAS VEGAS—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Jan. 8, 2004—Brings Digital Music, Movie & Photos from PCs and Memory Cards to TVs and Stereos Without Wires
Actiontec Electronics today announced the Actiontec Wireless Digital Media Player with Built-in Card Reader, the first product in its class that enables consumers to play digital images and music on their TVs and stereos from any of the eight major portable memory card formats used in digital cameras, digital camcorders and MP3 players. The VCR-sized appliance also wirelessly links computers to home entertainment centers for big-screen and big-speaker enjoyment of PC-based content ranging from downloaded music and movies to Internet radio.
With the player’s built-in card reader, users can insert any CompactFlash Type I or Type II, IBM Microdrive, MS Pro, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, MultiMedia or Secure Digital card into the machine, and the contents will play on the designated TV or stereo. As a result, digital home movies, digital camera photos and other images stored on the cards can be shared with friends and family from the comfort of the couch without first downloading them to a PC, and portable music files can be heard on the biggest sound system in the house.
In addition, digital music files housed on a PC can be played on the family stereo in their full audio glory without transferring them to CD, and Internet radio can be piped through the home stereo system instead of trapped in minuscule computer speakers. Users can also watch digital video from a family vacation or a child’s birthday party on the TV screen without converting it to videotape, view downloaded Internet movies without sitting in front of their PCs, and surf the Web using the television as their monitor.
This isn’t directly related to photography, but it will interest everyone who has a DVD rewriter…
Philips will demonstrate its new dual-layer DVD recordable technology at the DVD+RW Alliance booth at the CEATEC* JAPAN 2003 exhibition in Makuhari (Chiba, Japan) from October 7 to 11. Developed by Philips Research in cooperation with MKM (Mitsubishi Kagaku Media)/Verbatim, the technology virtually doubles data storage capacity on DVD recordable discs from 4.7 Gbyte to 8.5 Gbyte while remaining compatible with existing DVD Video players and DVD-ROM drives.
Both Philips and MKM regard the introduction of dual-layer DVD+R technology as the next important milestone in the drive to continually improve and expand the optical data storage options available to consumers. Users will benefit from the additional storage capacity of the DVD+R disc as it will enable them to record 4 hours of DVD-quality video or 16 hours of VHS-quality video, without the need to turn over the disc. PC users will be able to archive up to 8.5 Gbytes of computer files on a single disc, which almost doubles the storage capacity compared with the 4.7Gbytes for the single-layer DVD+R discs currently available.
