Photokina 2018 Roundup - All Our Coverage (and there's a lot!) in One Place

As the sun sets on Photokina 2018 (for us at least - the show is still open tomorrow), we look back at all of the new products that have been launched at the show. And my - there's certainly been a lot of them! Sony VENICE System

Sony have just unveiled VENICE, their first full-frame digital motion picture camera system. The camera combines a newly developed 36x24mm full-frame sensor and compatibility with a wide range of lenses, including anamorphic, Super 35mm and full-frame PL mount for a greater range of expressive freedom with shallow depth of field. The lens mount can also be changed to handle E-mount lenses for shooting situations that require smaller, lighter, wider and more characteristic lenses. A new colour management system and wide colour gamut gives users more control and greater freedom to work with images during grading and post-production. VENICE also has more than 15 stops of latitude to handle challenging lighting situations. Additionally, it is the film industry's first camera with a built-in 8-stage glass ND filter system. The VENICE CineAlta digital motion picture camera system is scheduled to be available in February 2018.

Sony Develops Next-Generation CineAlta Motion Picture Camera System

Sony has announced plans for its next-generation CineAlta digital motion picture camera system. This latest addition to the CineAlta family is being developed in close collaboration with creative professionals including Directors, Cinematographers and Digital Imaging Technicians. Key highlughts of the new product include a full-frame 36x24mm sensor exclusively designed for this Digital Motion Picture Camera, multiple aspect ratios, "exceptional" picture quality and compatibility with current and upcoming hardware accessories for CineAlta cameras (DVF-EL200 Full HD OLED Viewfinder, AXS-R7 recorder, AXS-CR1 and AR1 card reader, AXS and SxS memory cards). It will also maintain the workflow established with Sony’s 16bit RAW/X-OCN and XAVC.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium

The Sony Xpreria XZ Premium is a new smartphone with a 19-megapixel imager, a 25mm (eq.) f/2 lens, laser-assisted auto focus and 960fps video recording capability at 720p HD resolution for ultra-slow-motion playback. For the first time ever in a smartphone, Xperia XZ Premium features a 4K (2160x3840-pixel) 5.5” HDR display that uses Sony’s BRAVIA TV technology to give you an immersive 4K HDR viewing experience in the palm of your hand. Additional improvements have been made to the Bionz for mobile processing engine meaning it detects moving objects more precisely to enable Predictive Capture. Clarity, detail and texture are also improved hanks to the redesigned G lens with high optical clarity. The Xperia XZ Premium is available globally in in Luminous Chrome and Deepsea Black from late Spring 2017. Pricing to be confirmed.

Corel PaintShop Pro X7 Service Pack 2

Corel has released an update to PaintShop Pro X7. Service Pack 2 adds support for raw files generated by the Canon EOS 7D MarkII, PowerShot G7X and PowerShot SX60HS, the Fujifilm S1, X100T and X30, the Nikon D750, D810, 1 J4 and 1 S2, the Leica D-LUX (Typ 109) and V-LUX (Typ 114), the Olympus E-PL7, the Pentax K-S1, the Panasonic CM1, LX100, FZ1000, GH4 and the GM5, the Samsung NX3000 and NX1, plus the Sony ILCA-A77M2, A7M2, and A7S. The update also brings a wealth of feature enhancements and bug fixes.

DxO OpticsPro v10.3

DxO has released version 10.3 of Dxo Optics Pro, along with DxO FilmPack v5.1.1 and DxO ViewPoint v2.5.3. These updates provide support for new cameras such as the Nikon D5500, Canon PowerShot SX60 HS, and Olympus PEN E-PL7, as well as new correction tools. A new search engine has been added to the Source Browser to help users easily find and load any folder available on the operating system by simply typing its name. The OS X version also offers a new drag-and-drop feature that allows photographers to directly open a folder by dragging it into the Image Browser, providing quicker access to images. Additionally, the DxO Optics Modules library benefits from the addition of 422 new camera/lens combinations.

Canon UK Announces Spring Cashback

Canon UK and Irelad today launched its spring promotion allowing customers to claim up to £100/€120 cashback on selected products. These include three dSLR cameras, seven lenses, two flashes, three compact cameras, two digital camcorders and four printers. Those that purchase two products in Canon’s cashback offer can also claim a free hdbook photo book worth £99/€120. Impossible Color 600 & SX-70 Round Frame Instant FIlms

Impossible have released four new colour films for Polaroid 600 and Polaroid SX-70 instant cameras. The new film frames your images ‘in the round’ within the borders of a Polaroid-format instant photo, rather than the classic square, making it well-suited to portraiture and still-life photography. Based on a limited-run Polaroid instant film produced in Europe a decade ago, round frame film was re-introduced by Impossible in a B&W 600 version, late last year. Pricing for the colour version starts at €21 for a single pack.

Impossible Cyan 600 and Magenta 600 Monochrome

The Impossible Cyan 600 and Magenta 600 Monochrome are the first in a new series of Impossible monochrome films. “We have been experiencing a huge demand for films that take users out of the ‘norm’ of the classic square, white frame everyone recognises as a ‘Polaroid’,." says Creed O’Hanlon, Impossible’s Chief Executive Officer. "Impossible photographers like to push the boundaries of their creativity and we try to support them with a range of different instant film materials." Impossible Cyan 600 Monochrome and Magenta 600 Monochrome can be shot in any Polaroid 600-type camera or Impossible’s own Instant Lab. The films will be available on Wednesday 22nd October, from the Impossible Online Shop and selected resellers worldwide.

Corel AfterShot Pro 2.1

Corel has updated its AfterShot Pro software to Version 2.1. Available free to registered users, the 2.1 update introduces a number of new features and enhancements including new HDR tools for Mac and Linux, support for more than 17 new raw camera profiles, an improved Highlight Recovery Tool, as well as various performance and stability enhancements. Newly supported cameras include the Canon SX50 HS, the Fujifilm X-T1, X-E1, X-E2, X-Pro1, X-M1, X100S and X20, the Nikon D4s, D3300, 1 V3, 1 J4, Coolpix P330 and Coolpix A, and the Pentax Q, 645Z and K-500.

Impossible B&W SX-70 Hard Color

Impossible has just released a new instant film for Polaroid SX-70 type cameras. The B&W SX-70 Hard Color is the latest in a series of Impossible Special and Limited Edition instant films that offer not just alternatives to the classic, white, square frame made famous by Polaroid – Impossible has created films with black, silver, gold, multiple colors, and tropical and animal skin prints – but also different coloured film emulsions, including sepia, cyan and magenta.The Polaroid SX-70 format is now 42 years old but according to Creed O’Hanlon, the Berlin-based CEO of Impossible CEO, it still relevant and exciting: “Analogue black and white film photography is being rediscovered by a younger generation who are captivated by the magical physicality – and authenticity – of a monochrome picture that develops within a few minutes in the palm of your hand.”

The Canon PowerShot SX60 HS and PowerShot N2 are two new compact cameras. The PowerShot SX60 HS camera features a 65x Optical Zoom lens and amazingly broad focal length range equivalent to 21mm -1365mm, while the PowerShot N2 camera has a compact and unique, stylish design with a selfie-ready, flip-up touch panel LCD screen. The Canon PowerShot SX60 HS digital camera is scheduled to be available in October 2014 for estimated retail price of $549.99 / £449.99 / €569.99. The Canon PowerShot N2 digital camera is scheduled to be available in December 2014 with a choice of black and white body colors for an estimated retail price of $299.99 (only available in the USA).

Interview: Panasonic Pitches Premium Compact Pair and Two New Lenses

Photography Blog was invited along to Panasonic’s UK HQ in Bracknell , Berkshire, late August to hear more about its GM5 and LX100 releases, as well as the two new versions of its 35-100mm and 14mm lenses also launched today for its system cameras. Present at the meeting and making presentations were Panasonic UK’s Marketing Manager Dai Mukai, Head of Imaging Barney Sykes and Imaging Product Specialist Mark Baber, as well as the brand’s technical expert Mr Uematsu from Japan. Poison Paradise Special Edition Color for Polaroid 600

Impossible has launched three new instant films. "Continuing its approach of ‘innovating’ the classic square white frame associated with Polaroid instant photography, Impossible has created these films especially for Summer adding their own darker twist; deadly snakes can be seen twisted around stems and moving through the tropical fauna," the company says. The Poison Paradise Special Edition Color for Polaroid 600 cameras includes Hibiscus – the darkest frame, using a black background to set off the oranges and reds of the flowers, Fuchsia – the warmest frame, using the purples and creams of the blooms to uplift the orange background, and finally Frangipani, the brightest frame, using a sky blue base to bring the South American flowers to life. These are the first Impossible instant films to have am ‘expiry date’ use by date printed on them, enabling users to know exactly how long they have with the film. Impossible Poison Paradise can be used in any Polaroid 600 type camera and the Impossible Instant Lab.

Canon Recalls Thousands of PowerShot SX50 HS Cameras

Canon U.S.A. is recalling about 14,000 PowerShot SX50 HS cameras because, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, "a chemical used in the rubber part of the viewfinders on the camera can cause skin or eye irritation or an allergic reaction to the user." Canon says the phenomenon only affects "certain lots from September 1 through November 15, 2013."  The affected cameras have serial numbers beginning with “69”, “70” or “71” and have “1” as the sixth digit of the serial number. If you own one of the affected cameras you ought to contact Canon USA's Customer Support Centre.

New Instant Films for Polaroid SX-70

Impossible has announced the release of three new special edition colour films for the legendary Polaroid SX-70 Land instant camera. Each of the three new Special Edition SX-70 films (Color SX-70 Gold Frame, Color SX-70 Silver Frame and Color SX-70) boast the latest colour protection formula from Impossible, offering improved colour saturation and a high level of detail and sharpness. We had the oppotunity to try out the new Sony HX50 camera on the 38th floor of the iconic Gherkin building in central London. The HX50 is billed as "the world's smallest compact camera with a 30x optical zoom lens". Iridient Developer 2.0 for Mac OS X

Iridient Digital has released Iridient Developer 2.0 for Mac OS X. This update brings a name change, dropping the “RAW” from RAW Developer, along with support for non-raw images, including most standard image formats (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, etc) as well as OpenEXR and Radiance HDR image formats. Other major new features include a redesigned image preview window with an all-new image thumbnail browser optimised for Retina screens; an all-new lens correction module with support for lens profiles, chromatic aberration and distortion correction; support for 39 new camera models, star ratings metadata and EXIF 2.3 information. This release is a paid upgrade for users who originally purchased a licence prior to 16 September 2011. Photokina 2012 Press Day Announcements Round-Up

Sony XDCAM PMW-200

Sony has just unveiled the newest addition to its XDCAM HD4:2:2 line – the PMW-200 Full HD camcorder. Billed as the only professional handheld camcorder in its class with three 1/2”-type Exmor CMOS sensors and full HD 4:2:2 50Mbps recording, the Sony XDCAM PMW-200 has two high-speed SxS memory card slots. Developed specifically for professional content creation applications, these cards offer high transfer rates as well as resistance to shocks and vibrations. The PMW-200 camcorder is armed with a 14x zoom lens with auto-focus and image stabilisation. The lens is also equipped with three independent rings for zoom, focus and iris adjustment. The Sony PMW-200 is expected to be available in September for a suggested list price of $7,790.

Canon PowerShot SX260 HS Photos

The SX260 HS is Canon's premium travel zoom camera, sporting a 20x, 25-500mm lens, 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, GPS and 3 inch LCD screen.

Sony PMW-100 XDCAM HD422

The Sony PMW-100 XDCAM HD422 is the smallest and lightest XDCAM hand-held camcorder to date. Equipped with a newly developed 1/2.9-inch “Exmor” CMOS sensor, the Sony PMW-100 XDCAM HD422 features a 5.4-54mm (40-400mm equivalent) zoom lens, and supports Full HD video at 1080i and 1080p, and 720p up to 50 Mbps MXF recording and playback based on the MPEG HD422 codec using the standard MPEG HD422 Long GOP compression technology. The Slow & Quick Motion function enables users to create artistic fast and slow-motion footage from 1fps to 60fps in 720p mode and from 1fps to 30fps in 1080p mode. The PMW-100 will start shipping in May (pricing to be confirmed).

Nikon Coolpix P510 Photos

Ahead of our full review, here are 54 sample JPEG photos and a movie taken with the new Nikon Coolpix P510 compact camera. The Nikon Coolpix P510 is a bridge style compact camera with an astonishing 42x, 24-1000mm f/3-5.6 zoom lens.

Canon at Focus on Imaging 2012

In addition to the incredibly popular 5D Mark III, Canon were also showcasing the flagship EOS-1D X DLSR and some of their new compact camera models at Focus 2012.

We caught up with the new PowerShot SX40 HS, SX260 HS, SX240 HS, the waterproof D20 and the IXUS 510 HS. In addition, the 200-400mm f/4 L lens made a brief appearance behind closed doors, apparently one of only two such lenses in the world.

The Warner Sound Captured by Nikon

Nikon and the Warner Music Group have unveiled details of their cooperation at the upcoming South by Southwest Music & Media Conference (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. “The Warner Sound Captured by Nikon” will make its home at Austin’s famed La Zona Rosa, with two days and three nights of performances slated for 13-15 March. Nikon’s activities at SXSW include an HD-SLR Workshop with The Bui Brothers on the 13th, Nikon Shooting Opportunities with Robert Knight and the Your 1 Shot contest, which gives up-and-coming bands an opportunity to play in front of WMG executives and win Nikon gear. Tiffen Dfx 3.0.5

Tiffen has updated its Dfx filter suite to add compatibility with Avid Media Composer v6, Symphony v6, and NewsCutter v10, as well as support for a number of new (and older) Sony digital cameras. The newly supported models include the A550, A580, A700, A850, A900, NEX-3, NEX-5, NEX-5N, NEX-C3, SLT-A33, A35, A55, A65 and A77. There is also a new adjustable brush slider that covers large areas, and new blur controls for theDfx Paint Mask tool that gives more control over blending and transitioning. The Tiffen Dfx 3 photo plug-in, which is compatible with Photoshop, Lightroom and Aperture, is available today at an introductory price of $199.95. The standalone version of Tiffen Dfx retails for $169.95.

Canon Showcases New Products at Photo Plus Expo

Canon is showcasing its EOS-1D X professional DSLR camera and Pixma Pro-1 photo inkjet printer at Photo Plus Expo in New York City. The Canon EOS-1D X features a 18-megapixel full-frame sensor, 61-point AF system, three DIGIC processors and continuous shooting speeds of up to 14 frames per second. The Pixma Pro-1 Professional Photo Inkjet printer boasts a newly developed 12-ink system, five of which are monochrome, along with a new FINE Print Head which helps deliver consistent results. In addition to these brand new products, Canon is also showcasing its complete line-up of photo related products, such as SLR camera bodies, lenses, PowerShot digital cameras, high definition camcorders and photo printers. Photo Plus Expo 2011 is being held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Centre in NYC. You can find Canon in Booth #402.

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS

The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is a new super-zoom camera with a 35x lens, full manual control and full 1080p HD movie capture. Based around a back-illuminated 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, the SX40 is one of the first Canon compacts to feature Canon’s new DIGIC 5 image processor. The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS will be available from October 2011, priced at £459 / €529 / $429.99.

Pentax Q Photos

We had a brief opportunity to try out the new Pentax Q camera yesterday. Here are 72 sample JPEG photos, 27 RAW images, and a Full HD movie taken with the tiny new Pentax Q interchangeable lens camera. There's also a full ISO range from 125 to 6400 so that you can see exactly what the Pentax Q's 12 megapixel 1/2.3" back-illuminated CMOS sensor is capable of.

Jessops Opens New Shop in Manchester

Jessops has announced the unveiling a brand new shop in the heart of Manchester. “At over 3000 sq.ft this Centre of Excellence located at 107 Market street, Manchester, M1 1WN is the second to be launched this year and showcases a new customer friendly layout enabling customers to test and trial a vast portfolio of interactive cameras, camcorders, accessories and Jessops photo products,” the company said in a statement. Sony has announced 7 new Handycam camcorders -the Sony PJ30VE, PJ10E, CX700VE, XR160E, CX130E, CX360VE and SX45E. The new models include a Full HD 3D Handycam camcorder, built-in projector models and a video enthusiast model.

Sony Professional PMW-F3

The Sony Professional PMW-F3 camcorder is based on a Super 35mm sensor and PL mount technology. “Designed for television, commercials, music promos and budget features, the new camcorder is offered at a price point that will bring Super 35mm shooting within reach of a wider audience,” the company claims. Two configurations of the PMW-F3 will be available (PMW-F3L body only and PMW-F3K with PL lens kit including 35/50/85mm T2.0 fixed focal length lenses). First deliveries of are scheduled for January 2011. Price to be confirmed.

Canon WUX10 Mark II and SX80 Mark II Projectors

The Canon WUX10 Mark II and SX80 Mark II are two new digital projectors aimed at photographers. Both include a dedicated ‘Photo’ mode that offers exceptionally clear, accurate colour still images in any lighting environment. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.4

Adobe today released the final Photoshop Lightroom 2.4 and Camera Raw 5.4 updates. Both updates bring additional raw file support to 31camera and camera back models including the Canon EOS 500D, Nikon D5000. In addition, Adobe released an update to its Digital Negative specification. DNG 1.3 now includes opcodes, a defined list of operations and their parameters for performing complex activities in the raw file conversion process. By utilising opcodes, photographers can maintain the advantages of raw mosaic data, giving them increased opportunity to improve their photographs with the maximum amount of image data preserved. The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.4 update is available as a free download for existing Lightroom 2 customers and Camera Raw 5.4 is available as a free download for existing customers of Photoshop CS4, Photoshop Elements 7, Premiere Elements 7 and Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac. Kopin Corporation today announced that it had achieved a full-colour VGA display in a 0.27” diagonal size, which is by far the smallest VGA colour-filter LCD in the world. This is hailed by the company as “an important achievement in our previously announced goal to create a 2048 x 2048-resolution display in a size smaller than a typical postage stamp”. These tiny displays are likely to play a major role in future interchangeable-lens system cameras with high-resolution electronic viewfinders.

Andrey Tverdokhleb has announced version 3.9.5 of his Mac-only raw developer, Raw Photo Processor. The new release includes entirely new camera profiles for the Canon 5D MkII, 1Ds MkIII, 50D, the Sony A900, the Olympus E620, E3, E30, the Panasonic G1 and LX3 and more accurate profiles for the Sony A700, A350, A300, A200, A100, the Olympus E410, E420, E510, E520 and the Kodak SLR/c, SLR/n, 14NX, 14N and ProBack. Furthermore, it adds support for the Canon EOS 500D (T1i, KISS X, pictured), the Canon SX1 IS and the Kodak Z1015 IS.

Offering a 10x, 28-280mm lens in a pocketable camera, the mju 9000 also features a 12 megapixel sensor, 2.7 inch LCD screen, 1cm macro mode and 5fps shooting (at 3 megapixels). Priced at £310 / $349.99 and available in black and blue, the Olympus mju 9000 is certainly up against some tough competition, principally the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7 and Canon PowerShot SX200 IS. Iridient RAW Developer 1.8.3 for MacOS X

Iridient Digital have released RAW Developer 1.8.3, an update to their raw image processing software for Mac OS X. This update includes support for the Olympus E-620, Canon SX1 IS, Casio EX-FH20, recent Hasselblad backs and RAW files converted by Phocus software. Other highlights include GPS metadata export, improvements to the default tone curves for the Nikon D3X and Sony DSLR-A900 and updates to the default Nikon white balance presets for many models. Irident RAW Developer requires MacOS X 10.4.10 or later and costs $125. The update is free for existing users.

Ricoh GX200

Ricoh GX200The Ricoh GX200 compact digital camera for professionals is the 12 megapixel successor to last year’s GX100 model. Other significant improvements offered by the GX200 include better noise reduction thanks to the new Smooth Imaging Engine III processing engine, a larger 2.7-inch, 460,000 pixel HVGA LCD screen, 5 shot continuous RAW mode and an electronic level function for horizontal and vertical shooting. It also offers the same 24-72mm zoom lens, 25mm thick body and removable tilting electronic view?nder (optional accessory). Wacom Reduces UK Prices

Control 25 Cameras from a PC

DSLR Remote Pro Multi-Camera supports the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III, 1D Mark III, 40D, 30D and 400D/Digital Rebel XTi. All the cameras can be fired from the PC, in which case there is a delay of approximately 1/6 sec between each camera firing, or they can be fired simultaneously by wiring together the cameras’ remote release connections. DSLR Remote Pro Multi-Camera costs US $95 x the number of cameras supported. PSRemote Multi-Camera allows multiple Canon PowerShot SX100 IS, S5 IS, A640, G7 or G9 cameras to be controlled from a single PC. PSRemote Multi-Camera costs $49 x the number of cameras supported.

Canon Releases Over 90 Consumer Products
