Does the GFX 100S really prove that medium-format is "More than full-frame", and is it really better than the GFX 100? Fujifilm X-S10 First Impressions

We've spent some time using the brand new Fujifilm X-S10 mirrorless camera before today's official launch.

Billed as the ultimate all-rounder that offers something a little bit different, this APS-C sensor camera marks quite a departure from the usual Fujifilm blueprint.

The 'S' in the product name doesn't officially stand for anything in particular, but could represent small, secure, simplicity, stabilised, or all four.

So ahead of our full review, check out our detailed first impressions of using the Fujifilm XS10 now...

Fujifilm XF 50mm F1.0 R WR is World's Fastest Mirrorless Auto-focus Lens

The new Fujifilm XF 50mm F1.0 R WR is the first ever F1.0 auto-focus lens for mirrorless cameras.

Offering an equivalent focal length of 75mm in 35mm full-frame terms, it's ideal for portrait photography.

It weighs 845g, more than twice the weight of the similar XF 56mm F1.2 lens (405g), and measures 87x103.5mm (Diameter x Length). The filter size is 77mm.

Although undoubtedly a big, heavy lens, it still feels well-balanced on the X-T4 camera, even without a battery grip fitted.

The optical construction is 12 elements in 9 groups, including 1 aspherical element and 2 ED elements.

It's weather and dust resistant with seals in 11 different places, and works down to -10 degrees.

There are 9 rounded aperture blades for more attractive bokeh. Coupled with the maximum F1.0 aperture, this lens definitely offers the best bokeh of any XF optic.

At F1.0, the spherical aberration is intentionally left to soften the bokeh. At F1.2, the resolution is equivalent to the XF 56mm F1.2. At F2, vignetting is reduced like the XF 90mm F2.

Lens breathing is minimal. Fujifilm have officially measured it at 0.095%.

Auto-focusing was a little hesitant on the pre-production sample that Fujifilm sent us. The face and eye detection worked very well to improve the focus accuracy, though, even when shooting wide-open at f/1.0.

The minimum focus distance is 0.7m and the maximum magnification is 0.08x, which is almost identical to the XF 56mm F1.2.

The Fujifilm XF 50mm F1.0 R WR will be available on 24th September priced at £1499 / $1499 / €1599.

We've already been out shooting with the XF 50mm F1.0 - take a look at a gallery of sample images and some hands-on photos of the lens mounted on an X-T4 camera body.

DxO FilmPack 5

DxO Labs have released DxO FilmPack 5, a major new version of its photographic film rendering application. This update adds 16 new high-fidelity film renderings including Adox CHS 100 II, Bergger BRF 400 PLUS, Foma Fomapan 100 Classic, Fujifilm Neopan 400, Ilford Pan 100, Fuji Superia X-Tra 400 (pictured), Kodak Portra 400, and Adox Color Implosion. Other novelties include a fully-redesigned user interface and added support for raw format in order to even more faithfully restore colours. Additionally DxO FilmPack 5 offers a new Micro-contrast tool that brings out relief as well as details in images. Using a multi-scale filter that blurs the details while preserving the marked contours in an image, contrast is visibly reinforced — ideal for increasing the intensity of a landscape photo or giving portraits a strong look, particularly in black & white. The Blur tool has also been simplified and now offers two new modes: Vignetting, for applying an effect along the perimeter of the image and thus directing attention to a subject; and Soft Focus, for reproducing an artistically blurry effect that is ideal for portraits. DxO FilmPack 5 is immediately available as a plugin for DxO OpticsPro in the DxO online store.

Fujifilm X100T

The Fujifilm X100T is a premium large-sensor digital compact camera with an ultra-fast electronic shutter and an advanced hybrid viewfinder featuring real-time parallax correction and an electronic rangefinder. In electronic rangefinder mode, the focus area is enlarged and displayed in the bottom right of the viewfinder. Part of the original optical image is blocked and the EVF display is projected in the resulting space to facilitate manual focusing. Additionally, Focus Peaking and Digital Split Image modes can be selected and the magnification of the focused area can be adjusted. Full HD videos can now be recorded while using the optical viewfinder. A completely silent electronic shutter that is capable of exposures up to 1/32,000sec has also been added, making the Fujifilm X100T one of the most discreet cameras out there. Other highlights include a 16.3-megapixel X-Trans CMOS II sensor with on-chip phase detection, a 23mm (35mm equivalent) f/2 lens, a 3-inch 1.04-million-dot monitor, seven customisable function buttons, raw shooting capability and a top sensitivity setting of ISO 51,200. The Fujifilm X100T will be available in the UK in both black and silver from November 2014 with a suggested retail price of £999.99.

Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 R APD

The Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 R APD - billed as the world’s first AF lens with an apodisation filter - is a new ultra-fast telephoto lens for Fujifilm's X-series compact system cameras. Offering a 35mm equivalent focal length of 85mm, the lens has a maximum aperture of f/1.2, making it the world’s brightest autofocus lens designed for digital cameras with an APS-C sensor. The XF56mm F1.2 R APD offers "brilliant levels of sharpness," even when shooting  wide open at f/1.2. In addition, the apodisation filter smooths the outlines of out-of-focus highlights resulting in superior bokeh. The apodisation filter delivers its best results at wider apertures. To enable wide apertures to be used even in bright environments, an ND filter is included that adjusts brightness in three levels. To indicate the apodising effect, the lens features an aperture ring showing the effective F-number in red. The difference between the FNo. and the effective FNo. indicates the effectiveness of the apodisation filter. The Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 R APD will be available in the UK from November 2014 with a suggested retail price of £1099.99.

Fujfilm FinePix A600 Zoom Review at CNET

Fujifilm FinePix A600 ZoomCNET have reviewed the Fujfilm FinePix A600 Zoom, which features a Super CCD sensor, 6.3 megapixels, 3x optical zoom lens and 2.4 inch LCD.

“As a budget point-and-shoot, the A600’s features don’t exactly stand out. The 6-megapixel Fujifilm SuperCCD sensor is complemented by a mundane 36m-to-108mm-equivalent lens. It lacks image stabilization, so the most you can do for low-light or high-speed shooting is turn on the flash and bump the sensitivity up to its maximum of ISO 400. The camera includes an anemic video mode that records QVGA (320 x 240) footage at 10fps, little better than most camera phones’ video modes.”

Fujifilm FinePix E900 Zoom Review at DCResource

Fujifilm FinePix E900 ZoomDCResource have published their review of the new Fujifilm FinePix E900 Zoom, a 9 megapixel digital camera with a 4x optical zoom lens equivalent to 32-128mm and an ISO range of ISO 80 to ISO 800.

“Overall, I’d say that the FinePix E900’s photo quality is very good. Photos were well-exposed, with accurate color and good sharpness. Purple fringing levels were a bit higher than I would like to have seen, but I would not consider this to be a problem. The main complaint I have is that fine details get “mushy”—have a look at the grass in this shot to see what I’m talking about. This only gets worse as the ISO goes up, with these two photos as examples. This won’t be a problem for smaller prints, but at 8 x 10 and above you will likely notice this loss of detail. So, how this affects you really depends on what you plan on doing with your photos.”

Fujifilm FinePix S5600 Zoom Review at DigitalCameraInfo

Fujifilm FinePix S5600 ZoomDigitalCameraInfo have published a review of the Fujifilm FinePix S5600 Zoom, a 5 megapixel compact digital camera with Fujifilm’s new 5th Generation Super CCD HR sensor with Real Photo Technology. The Fujifilm S5600 has an ISO range of 64 to 1600 and boasts a 10x optical zoom lens.

“The SLR-like Fujifilm FinePix S5200 is a 5.1 megapixel (effective) 10x ultra zoom camera with the typical priorities of a long zoom Fuji: it lacks optical image stabilization, but attempts to compensate with extended ISO settings up to 1600 and a pretty wide maximum aperture to allow fast shutter speeds, minimizing the need for image stabilization. Its images are captured with a 1/2.5” CCD and will appear on a 1.8” LCD monitor, as will its 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 video clips in AVI (Motion JPEG) format. The S5200 is a light, compact camera that offers manual control options, high sensitivity settings and a long telephoto lens to a range of consumers at a list price of $399.95 – going as low as $320 online. “

Fujifilm FinePix A350 Zoom Review at DigiCamReview

A350 ZoomDigiCamReview have published a joint review of the Fujifilm FinePix A350 Zoom and A350 Zoom digital cameras.

“This is a joint review of the new Fujifilm Finepix A345 and A350. The Fujifilm Finepix A345 and A350 both feature a 3x optical zoom lens, the only difference is that that A345 is a 4 megapixel digital camera, whereas the A350 is a 5 megapixel camera. The A345 is available from around £100 (£123 at amazon with free postage), and the A350 is available from around £125 (£139 at amazon with free postage) - they replace the A330, and the A340, Fuji’s previous budget / value models. The 3x optical zoom lens is equivalent to 35-105mm on a 35mm camera. They both feature a 1.7” TFT screen. The camera is enclosed in a silver plastic body. It records unlimited 320 x 240 / 15fps videos with sound.”

Fujifilm FinePix F10 Zoom Review at DCResource

Fujifilm FinePix F10 ZoomDCResource have reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix F10 Zoom, which has an ISO range of 80 to 1600, Super CCD sensor with 6.1 megapixels and a 2.5 inch LCD screen.

“Photo quality on the F10 was excellent. I was consistently impressed with the output from the F10—and this is coming from someone who hasn’t been a big fan of Fuji’s recent efforts. If I was to complain about something it would be the above average purple fringing and occasional overexposure of some photos. The area in which the F10 really stands out is when the ISO is cranked up. If you’re tired of blurry pictures, then this is the camera for you. The F10 can go all the way to ISO 1600 and the photos are still usable, though you probably won’t want to print them at 8 x 10 or larger due to the noise. You can set the ISO yourself or just put the camera into natural light mode and let it pick the right sensitivity for you.”

Loss of a memory card or unexpected PC system errors are the risks which overshadow any digital photo collection, and although high street digital photo printing services are becoming more and more popular, increasingly people are neglecting to have their digital pictures developed into prints.
