No, this isn't an April Fool's joke - Pentax really have just announced a new flagship DSLR camera with an APS-C sensor that will cost a whopping £1,899.99 in the UK and $1,999.99 in the US.
In a world where everyone is scrambling to conquer the growing mirrorless market, new DSLR cameras are rarer than hen's teeth, so it's either great or surprising to see Pentax sticking to their DSLR guns, depending on whether you are a fan of either the brand or the technology.
You certainly can't deny that Pentax have pulled out all the stops to at least make the range-topping K-3 Mark III an interesting camera. For starters, it has a mightily impressive optical viewfinder with an almost 100% field of view and massive 1.05x magnification.
It also uses a new 25 megapixel BSI sensor and PRIME V image processor that are capable of pushing the ISO range all the way up to ISO 1,600,000, along with a new SAFOX 13 autofocus system with 101 AF points, in-body Shake Reduction (IBIS) worth 5.5 f-stops and burst shooting of up to 12 frames per second. There's even 4K video recording...
We can't help feel that Pentax have ignored the memo about the near-future of DSLR cameras - the one clearly marked "Extinct" - and have ploughed on with the development of the K3 III regardless of whether anyone will actually buy it. After all, nearly £$2000 will buy you a lot of mirrorless camera - almost the excellent Canon EOS R6 with its full-frame sensor, for example, or you could save a lot of cash and go for the outstanding Fujifilm X-T4 APS-C camera.
The new 100-megapixel medium-format Fuji GFX 100S is smaller, lighter and more versatile than the flagship GFX 100, and crucially, significantly cheaper too. Does the GFX 100S really prove that medium-format is "More than full-frame", and is it really better than the GFX 100? Find out now by reading our in-depth review, complete with a huge gallery of full-size sample images and videos...

Canon today unveiled an exciting new urban art exhibition at London’s Pop Brixton as part of a Europe-wide initiative that highlights the importance of photojournalism in telling the stories that need to be told. The exhibition documents the trials and tribulations of being a Grime artist in London, a genre enjoying a breakout period following its recent success scooping a Mercury Prize in September. The story was captured on the EOS 5D Mark IV, by Reuters award-winning photojournalist, Paul Hackett. To bring the images to life, Canon has teamed up with art installation group, Remain Different. Through their work, Paul’s unique story is shared with the public by incorporating his powerful imagery with Pop Brixton’s unique architecture including shipping containers, concrete arches and staircases.. The exhibition is on display from 5th – 16th July.
Following the launch of Canon's Live for the Story advert and marketing campaign targeting a new ‘millennial’ audience last month – and for which there wasn’t a camera in sight – the photo giant is back to targeting its core users with two new DSLRs. Arriving in July are the enthusiast targeted EOS 6D Mark II, and the beginner friendly EOS 200D.
Photography Blog was at the London preview to bring you this report…

Canon U.S.A. has released two new “Canon See Impossible” videos. Available for viewing now on the Canon U.S.A. website, these two new movies – “See Beyond Darkness” and “See the Light” – showcase the capabilities of Canon imaging technology in extremely low-light conditions. In “See Beyond Darkness,” the impossible assignment for Director of Photography Andy Casagrande was to record images of a rare biofluorescent turtle found only in the remote, unspoiled reefs of the Solomon Islands. The low-light capabilities of Canon’s ME20F-SH Multipurpose Camera and EOS-1D X DSLR camera enabled researchers to capture vivid images without disturbing the natural environment. In “See the Light,” Canon’s technology captured the beauty of bioluminescent creatures under the sea, the grandeur of the extremely difficult-to-photograph Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), and the wonder of the earth from far above it. The technology used by Canon to create these videos takes viewers to seemingly impossible dark places that were previously beyond what the human eye could see and technology could perceive.

Canon has announced a new interchangeable-lens camera featuring an APS-C sized monochrome sensor and Nikon F bayonet mount. Don't get too excited, though - the Canon M15P-CL is an industrial camera rather than an SLR. In the market of interchangeable-lens industrial cameras, Nikon has very strong positions, which is probably why Canon - a newcomer to this segment - decided to introduce an F-mount model instead of trying to push its own EF-mount lenses. Pricing and availability have yet to be confirmed.

The money raised during the 45-day campaign will be used to purchase machine time as well as the raw materials in quantity in order to mass produce the triggers. The Stedi-Shot DSLR trigger system consists of a bracket the camera sits on that holds a cable release perfectly aligned with the start/stop button on the back of the camera. By using the cable release to activate the start/stop button on the camera there is no shaky footage caused by pushing the button. Currently there are five different camera models that are supported by the Stedi-Shot: the Canon 5d MKII, the Canon 7D, the Canon T2i, the Canon 60D and also the Nikon D7000.

Moreover, the all-new AI Servo II AF mode gives still photographers the power and performance to track and focus a fast-moving subject at speeds up to 10 frames per second (fps). Canon is also making bold claims as to the high-ISO performance of the camera - the “regular” ISO range stretches from ISO 100/21° to ISO 12,800/42°, but expansion settings push this all the way up to ISO 102,400/51°. The Canon EOS 1D Mark IV is also geared toward videographers, as it offers full manual exposure control and selectable frame rates when shooting 1080p HD video. The EOS 1D Mark IV is equipped with a sixteen-megapixel “APS-H” sized sensor and Dual DIGIC 4 Image Processors with approximately six times the processing power of DIGIC III for full 14-bit A/D conversion at 10 fps. Other new features include a large three-inch solid structure Clear View II LCD screen with 920,000 dot/VGA resolution and a wide 160-degree viewing angle. The new in-camera copyright information feature helps professionals secure control over images by setting copyright data directly into the camera and appending that information to each image file in the EXIF metadata. Additional features include a fluorine coating on the Low Pass Filter to further repel dust and enhance the EOS Integrated Cleaning System. The Canon EOS-1D Mark IV is scheduled to be delivered to U.S. dealers in late December, and will be sold in a body-only configuration at an estimated retail price of $4,999. In the UK and the euro zone, the 1D Mark IV will be priced at £4499 / €5499 respectively, including VAT.

Photokina is over for another 2 years, so we’ve looked back at some of the most notable developments from the World’s biggest photography show.
Leica S System
Undoubtedly the greatest surprise of this year’s Photokina was Leica’s announcement of the new S system. The German manufacturer did not simply launch a new, high-resolution camera with an assortment of lenses to go with it. They did not simply introduce a new mount either. Instead they announced a completely new camera format, something that hasn’t happened since the debut of the FourThirds system five years ago.
The new CanoScan 5600F, LiDE200 and LiDE100 scanners provide an easy-to-use and affordable way to archive photos. The new Auto Scan Mode has been included on all 3 models, which reduces the scanning process from eight steps down to two. Dual Color Gamut Processing Technology matches the color tones between the original and scanned images for a more accurate reproduction. The CanoScan 5600F can scan up to six frames of a 35mm filmstrip or four 35mm slides at a maximum optical resolution of 4800 x 9600 dots-per-inch, and costs $149.99. The CanoScan LiDE 200 has a maximum optical resolution of 4800 x 4800 dpi while the CanoScan LiDE 100 has a maximum optical resolution of 2400 x 4800 dpi. They cost $89.99 and $59.99 respectively.

DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the Canon A720 IS digital camera, which offers 8 megapixels and optical image stabilization.
“The Canon A720 IS is a unique hybrid of an entry-level budget point-and-shoot and an advanced manual control camera. The PowerShot fits into a rare category of 6x mid-range zooms since most manufacturers tend to stick to the standard 3x optical zoom or push the optics up to 18x. There are, however, a select number of competitors in the field of 6x or 7x optical zoom cameras, though most don’t offer the image quality the A720 IS affords. In general, the Canon A720 IS is a good budget point-and-shoot for automatic shooters who might turn to manual shooters. With its optical image stabilization, mid-range zoom, sub-$250 price tag, and solid performance, the PowerShot A720 IS is a good value.”

The-Digital-Picture have reviewed the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“The image quality coming out of the Canon EOS 400D Digital Rebel XTi is excellent - We expect nothing less from Canon and they have delivered. Image quality is, however, different from Canon’s other recent DSLRs. Since a change such as this takes time to get used to (post processing-wise), I will continue to evaluate my results. But, what I am seeing is a new tone curve. Reds, yellows, and oranges seem to be slightly darker while blues seem slightly lighter. The tone curve seems to push shadows darker - but the detail remains. In addition, the 400D/XTi meters 1/3 stop darker than the 30D. Maybe Canon got tired of looking at our blown highlights. “

Digital Camera Tracker have just reviewed the Canon PowerShot SD630 (also called the Canon Digital IXUS 65), a 6 megapixel camera with 3x zoom lens, ISO 800, Widescreen (16:9) mode and a 3 inch LCD screen.
“Outdoor shooting tends to stress a sensors abilities because of the inherent dynamic range that exist. I found that with the SD630 and using just a little photographic common sense I could capture images that were sharp and had excellent color balance and saturation without causing the cameras sensor to freak out and do funny things to the image quality. As a matter of fact, for a sub-compact, the SD630 delivered time and again outstanding overall image quality, even when I pushed the sensors ability just a little.”

DigitalCameraInfo have published their review of the Canon PowerShot S2 IS, a 5 megapixel digital camera with a 12x optical zoom equivalent to 36–432mm on a 35mm camera.
“The Canon PowerShot S2 picks up where the PowerShot S1 IS left off, though not perhaps in the ways some might expect: it improved upon the S1’s strengths while still falling short in all the same areas. The S2 makes significant strides in the push towards hybrid functionality, adding stereo recording, manual audio controls, dual recording buttons, and a wind reduction function. The 12x optical zoom lens is extremely versatile and includes selectable stabilization settings to optimize performance and distinguish it from other ultra zoom models—and if it’s not versatile enough, the user has the option to purchase compatible accessory lenses for increased wide angle and telephoto capabilities.”

Luminous Landscape have an interesting take on the new Canon EOS 5D, Sony Cyber-shot R1 and the state of the photography industry.
“Though I know these are fighting words, I’m afraid that I regard the 4/3rd concept is an evolutionary dead-end. A -2X sized sensor may have made some sense five years ago when 35mm sized sensors were nearly astronomical in cost. But now this differential has shrunk dramatically, and will continue to do so. The promised smaller size of camera bodies due to the use of smaller sensors is modest at best. For example, the Olympus E-1 is only 150 grams lighter than the Canon 5D. True, Olympus lenses are smaller and lighter, but this hasn’t turned out to be all that compelling a sell.”

The New York Times has published an interesting article which compares the recent upturn of Kodak and its digital camera/printer products with the company’s old Brownie camera:
“The reason people buy a Canon is not fundamentally ease of use, and the reason they buy Sony is not ease of use,” Mr. Schaeffer said. It was a position that resonated with the history of Kodak, which popularized the Instamatic camera, and long before that, the Brownie, which had the slogan “You push the button and we do the rest…
Kodak sold a million printer docks in the first year. Printers have the potential to be far more profitable than cameras, because customers are locked into years of buying ink and paper. Even more important, the printer dock helped Kodak’s cameras stand out in crowded electronics stores, as Kodak convinced many retailers to put its printers right in the aisle that sold cameras, not in the printer section.”

The UK website Photo-i recently launched a new feature called Eye to Eye, in which they will meet various manufacturers and ask the questions that you want answered. The minutes of their first meeting with Canon are now online.
“Many people have asked about the new BCI-7 series of ink tanks. These new cartridges boast greater print longevity (up to 100 years is the claim). I am told that these are for the Japanese market only. When I pushed question further, Canon could not comment on future product availability or developments. My own guess, and I stress this is my own view, is that yes these will be available, probably early in the new year. It would be folly for Canon not to launch this hot product world-wide. I suspect that there must be a mountain of un-sold BCI-6 ink tanks to dispense with first.”

Canon’s Two New Scanners Deliver Unparalleled Performance and Quality for Professional and Home Use

“Canon’s history as a leading imaging technology provider has been the backbone for our understanding of the products that will meet the needs of today’s consumers and professionals,” said Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president and general manager of the consumer imaging group at Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. Digital Camera Magazine have just reviewed the 4 megapixel Canon Digital Ixus 430.
“As a general all-rounder the Ixus 430 is a stylish piece of kit that’s more than adequate for everyday shots. Some of the camera’s navigation takes a little getting used to but once familiar with it, the quick one push to major functions is useful. The overall image quality at the lower ISO setting is excellent, but in some lighting conditions, ISO200 and above, the images produced are grainy. Overall image quality is reasonable but no better than other cameras in this price bracket. In high contrast situations detail can be lost and the appearance of blue fringing becomes apparent. The small flash works well and is powerful enough for most situations that you?ll need it for.”

Canon takes aim at the home photo printing market
Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 9 July 2004. Canon, a leader in photographic and imaging technology, has today announced their strategic push to capture the rapidly accelerating demand for personal photo printers with the release of the futuristically styled PIXMA range.
Canon celebrated the launch by throwing an exclusive party at Pierre Cardin’s private mansion in Cannes. After taking photos with her EOS 300D camera, Helena Christensen showed off the range by demonstrating the simplicity of creating photo prints, which were then signed and given to guests.
With digital camera growth at an all time high, home photo printing is set to enjoy strong growth with the convergence of market factors such as increased photo quality, lower prices, greater connectivity and ease of use empowering consumers to print directly from their digital cameras.
With futuristic styling, ‘plug and print’ photolab quality printing, Canon has high expectations for the 8 new PIXMA products. Five of the eight products support the new PictBridge standard, which means the majority of all current digital cameras can plug straight into them for direct photo printing without a PC. When loaded with special Canon photo paper, the results can be superior to photolab quality prints.
The print heads of all PIXMA printers produce 2 picolitre ink droplets, about 2 million times smaller than an average rain drop. The secret is in Canon’s FINE technology, which uses a silicon chip manufacturing process to produce its print heads, for unrivalled tolerance and precision.

Photo-i has just started an interactive review of Canon’s fastest and highest resolution photo printer, the 4800 x 2400 dpi1 Bubble Jet i965. This recently announced six-ink printer produces a 400dpi full A4 photo in approximately 60 seconds, with a 4"x 6” print taking just 21 seconds.
“The CD-R tray feeder simply clicks into position, once fitted the clear Perspex slider has to be pushed all the way back. The CD-R tray slides in a grove and you must ensure that the two side arrows line up with the arrows on the feeder. I will test the quality of printing onto CD’s later in the review. I liked the inclusion of a 8cm mini CD-R holder, this also has a business card CD-R aperture.”

“We are not sure about the camera’s feedback on autofocus. There were situations where the autofocus seemed not to lock in. There is also a danger that you may push incidentally the button for manual focus with your thumb. This is not a good ergonomic solution. We found the feedback from the Sony F828 a lot better.”

Breakthrough Software Application for Digital SLR Camera Users
Eliminates Blur, Distortion, Chromatic Aberration And Vignetting
Las Vegas, NV (February 12, 2004) ? DO Labs, a software company focused on research in image processing to enhance image quality, today announces DxO Optics Pro, a revolutionary software solution designed for professional and expert photographers. DxO Optics Pro delivers genuine and perceptible quality improvements by automatically correcting images for:
- Distortion
- Chromatic aberrations
- Vignetting
- Blur (lack of perceived sharpness)
“Isn’t it frustrating that the more you pay for high-end digital cameras or lenses, the more you feel their limitations?” asks Jerome Meniere, CEO of DO Labs. “The brighter a lens, the softer it is wide open, the wider the range of a zoom lens, the greater the distortion, the higher resolution the sensor is, the more visible chromatic aberration becomes. DxO Optics PRO will help demanding photographers get the best possible image quality from their equipment, at any settings”
“DxO Optics Pro can be thought of as a ‘software corrective lens’ for your DSLR,” explains Dr. Guichard, DO Labs? Chief Scientist. “We have created objective, laboratory-grade precise mathematical models of each fault, and developed fully automatic algorithms to remedy them”.

This week’s Sunday Photographer article sees Kent Phelan take a look at the plus and minus (yes, minus!) points of the current flavour of the month, the Canon EOS 10D digital SLR.
“Good morning! This week I’ve asked my friend Kent Phelan, a longtime photo junkie and all-around good guy, to write down some of his comments about his new 10D. The 10D, as everybody in the photography Universe knows by now, is the present “state of the affordable art” ? a camera that simultaneously pushes previous performance and price limits. How many moments it will remain the camera of the moment is anybody’s guess….”
