Sony ZV-1 Vlogging Camera for £700

The Sony ZV-1 is a completely new compact camera designed from the ground-up for vloggers. With the majority of 6-12 year old children now aspiring to be a vlogger, Sony feel that the time has come to launch a unique product that specifically caters to the needs of YouTube creators.

Sony want you to use the ZV1 instead of a smartphone - apparently 73% of vloggers currently use a phone. Sony claim that you can get better professional quality video with smooth bokeh by simply hitting the dedicated Bokeh button on top of the camera. The ZV1 changes the physical aperture to do this, making it as wide as possible, and uses ND filter too, rather than simulating the effect.

Sony also point out that the selfie cameras on mobiles are usually the worst quality, another advantage for the ZV1, while the large windshield on top of the Z-V1 and the mic input on the side combine to provide much better audio.

Finally, the Sony ZV1 has built-in wi-fi/bluetooth and apps for sharing to mobile phone, including a proxy option for quicker lower-quality sharing.

Available in the first week of June, it will be competitively priced at £700 in the UK, almost half the price of the RX100 VII, making it a great B-camera for the A7-series.

The GP-VPT2BT Bluetooth wireless remote commander will be available in the UK for half-price at launch. It features a C1 button which can turn also turn on the ZV1's Bokeh function.

PIXII Rangefinder Camera Launches, Aimed at Smartphone Upgraders, No Memory Card Slot or Screen

As if the new Zeiss ZX1 and the Zenit M weren't surprising enough, there's another intriguing new camera in town in the shape of the rather oddly named PIXII.

This appears to be a French initiative that's just soft-launched with an on-trend teaser-based website. Unfortunately, in this current age where seemingly every new photographic product is leaked, yes, you've guessed it, the full details of the PIXII have already been leaked, including their entire financial business plan, courtesy of Leicarumors.

Aimed at smartphone photographers looking for a more affordable camera to upgrade to, the styling of the new PIXII is certainly refreshing, coming across like a miniature rangefinder on steroids that uses Leica lenses, hence the rumour site coverage.

It remains to be seen if this two-man team can actually bring the PIXII to market after being in development for the last 3 years, but the launch of their new website certainly seems to suggest that they're getting closer to their goal. Bonne chance!

Update: PIXII have now released a press releases and official product shots of their new rangefinder camera (pictured above).

Reinventing the Emil Busch Glaukar 91mm f/3.1 Lens

More than 100 years after the Emil Busch Glaukar 3.1 was introduced, two top German photographers have reinvented this classic as a modern portrait lens. Fashion photographer Benedikt Ernst and portrait photographer Firat Bagdu have partnered with optical engineer Wolfdieter Prenzel for this project, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring the Glaukar 97mm f/3.1 into the modern age. The new Glaukar 3.1 will have the same brass appearance and silhouette as the original but will be constructed from high-end aluminium with a brass-like finish, which ensures the durability and mechanical precision of a modern lens. And while the new lens will look very much like the classic, the inside has been redesigned by Prenzel, completely from scratch to meet today’s high-tech demands. Planned for release in Canon, Fujifilm, Leica M and T, MFT and Sony fit, the new Glaukar 91mm f/3.1 will be manufactured in Wetzlar, Germany.

Sony A7R II Preview

At a recent event held at Pinewood studios near London, we were able to sample Sony’s upcoming Alpha 7R II. The original α7R was a compelling camera that proved you didn’t need to cart around something size of a Nikon D810 to get super high resolution images. Its successor improves on the original in several key areas. It packs an even higher resolution sensor, but is also now capable of 4K video recording. Autofocus performance has been boosted as well, with Sony claiming the new camera to be up to 40% faster to focus than the original α7R. The α7R II also incorporates an advance in-body image stabilisation system, plus an improved OLED viewfinder.

Sony RX10 II and Sony RX100 IV Preview

At a recent event held at Pinewood studios near London, we were able to sample Sony’s upcoming RX10 II and RX100 IV cameras. Both come equipped with new-generation 1-inch Exmor RS sensors for improved image processing speed and 4K video recording. Each camera boasts significantly quicker burst shooting speeds, as well as super-fast 1000fps recording for slow motion video clips. The RX10 II and RX100 IV also receive a faster maximum shutter speed and an improved OLED viewfinder.

Sony RX100 IV

The Sony RX100 IV (DSC-RX100M4) is a new digital compact camera featuring a 1"-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor and a 24-70mm (eq.) f/1.8-2.8 lens. Thanks to the attached DRAM chip, the Sony RX100 IV is capable of capturing full-resolution stills at 16 frames per second, and the ultra-fast readout of the image sensor enables users to select shutter speeds as fast as 1/32,000 second. The camera can also record 4K movies using the XAVC S codec, which records video at a high data rate of 100 Mbps. The camera utilises full-pixel readout without pixel binning to ensure that all the finer details of 4K video are captured with minimal moire and ‘jaggies.' Additionally, the RX100 IV can capture 40x super slow motion video at up to 960fps. The new Sony Cyber-shot RX100 IV will be available this July for about $1000.

Sony RX10 II

The Sony RX10 II (DSC-RX10M2) is a new compact camera featuring the world’s first 1"-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor and a Zeiss branded 24-200mm (eq.) f/2.8 lens. The addition of an attached DRAM chip enables the camera to shoot full-resolution stills at 14 frames per second for an extended period of time. Additionally, the ultra-fast readout of the image sensor is responsible for the high speed Anti-Distortion Shutter (maximum speed of 1/32000 second), which allows the Sony RX10 II to capture sharp images with a wide open aperture at brightness levels up to EV197. The camera can record 4K movies using the XAVC S codec, and reduced-resolution slow-motion video at up to 960fps. The new Sony RX10 II high-zoom camera will be available this July for about $1,300.

The Sony A65 and A77 digital SLT cameras both feature a newly developed, APS-C sized 24.3-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor and extremely fast burst shooting with continuous auto focus. Billed as the quickest, most responsive interchangeable lens cameras in their class, the Sony A77 and the Sony A65 feature shooting speeds of 12 and 10fps, respectively, with uninterrupted continuous phase-detection auto focus for tracking fast-moving subjects with ease. Additionally, the Sony A77 comes with a new 19-point AF module with 11 cross-sensors, while the A65 offers 15-point auto focus with 3 cross-hatched sensors. The other main difference between the two models is that the A77 has double control dials and a separate top-mounted LCD data display. The sensor has a sensitivity range of ISO 100-16000, with ISO 50 available as an “expanded” setting on the Sony A77. Sony Cyber Shot DSC-H9 Review at PopPhoto

Sony H9PopPhoto have just reviewed the 15x zoom Sony Cyber Shot DSC-H9 digital camera.

“At higher ISOs, noise reduced the image quality rating, but we were pleasantly surprised. At ISO 800, the H9 displayed Moderate noise and Extremely High resolution, about 1550 lines average. At ISO 1600 and 3200, noise creeped into Unacceptable—but not by much. This is much better than many highmegapixel compacts we’ve tested, and similar to some recent DSLRs. Plus, the H9’s grain pattern at high ISOs is tight, like grainy color film. So, if not enlarged too much, shots at ISO 3200 could be usable.”

Sony H9 Review at CameraLabs

Sony H9CameraLabs have just reviewed the 15x zoom Sony H9 digital camera.

“Heading the worryingly long list of downsides though is image quality. Set the H9 at 80 or 100 ISO and you can take some great-looking photos, but at 200 ISO and above, smearing from noise reduction really begins to take its toll. We’ve seen watercolour effects on all Super-zooms, and the H9 is sadly no exception.”

As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, and a former Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems, as well as a recording studio owner/operator, inventor, and now, a digital camera enthusiast, GARY has more digital camera knowledge in his entire brain than most people have in their little finger. In the unlikely event that GARY would not know the answer to your question, he will answer it anyway, true to the spirit of the word “Parries”, a fencing term which, in this context, implies “cleverly evasive answers”. So let your imagination run wild. Email all your nagging digital camera questions to: [email protected] , and then, En Garde!

You may also attach to your email an ORIGINAL PHOTO of your choosing. A preview of the photo will be displayed with your question, and a full-sized version will be just a click away. Sony DSC-W100 Review at CNET

Sony DSC-W100CNET have reviewed the Sony DSC-W100, an 8 megapixel camera with 3x zoom lens and ISO 1250.

“One advantage the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W100 has over the DSC-W70 is a sensor that’s capable of shooting at ISO 80. Photos shot at this sensitivity level—and to a certain extent, at ISO 100—are relatively sharp with little noise and few processing artifacts. Beyond that, the aggressive noise-suppression algorithms kick in, blurring and smearing details. Photos print reasonably well to as large as 8x10, but they look a little soft and foggy.”

Sony DSLR-A100

Sony DSLR-A100The Sony DSLR-A100 is announced. Sony DSC-W30 Review at DigitalCameraInfo

Sony DSC W50DigitalCameraInfo have taken a look at the new 6 megapixel Sony DSC W30 which offers a 3x optical zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD screen.

“Built with the technologically disadvantaged in mind, the W30 comes with a function guide that explains what each mode is for and how to make large prints from each image size. A High Sensitivity mode also allows entry-level photographers to grab a low-light shot without the flash. This mode utilizes the high end of the wide 80-1000 ISO range included on the Cyber-shot W30. While its inclusion is a bonus for such an affordably priced digital camera, the mode itself yields less than lovely pictures. Even with Sony’s noise reduction system at full throttle, a lot of noise comes through.”

As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, and a former Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems, as well as a recording studio owner/operator, and now, a digital camera enthusiast, GARY has more digital camera knowledge in his entire brain than most people have in their little finger. In the unlikely event that GARY would not know the answer to your question, he will answer it anyway, true to the spirit of the word “Parries”, a fencing term which, in this context, implies “cleverly evasive answers”. So let your imagination run wild. Email all your nagging digital camera questions to: [email protected], and then, En Garde!

You may also attach to your email an ORIGINAL PHOTO of your choosing. A preview of the photo will be displayed with your question, and a full-sized version will be just a click away (unless you request otherwise). No personal information will be published with your question unless you specifically include it in the text or attached photo of your email, which may be further edited for grammar, content, or other reasons.

The Death of the Bridge Camera

Minolta DiMAGE 5PMA 2006: The first ever digital camera that I bought was the Minolta DiMAGE 5 bridge-style camera, so-called because it “bridged” the gap between a smaller compact digital camera and a larger digital SLR. Now it seems that the bridge camera has become something of a dying breed, at least for those manufacturers with DSLRs in their product range.

Boom Times for Western European Digital Camera Market

IDC Press Release 10/08/04

Boom Times Continue in the Western European Digital Camera Market, But Tougher Battles Lie Ahead, Says IDC

LONDON, August 10, 2004 - During 2003, shipments of digital cameras into Western Europe increased by over 95% and reached almost 16 million units, which translated into $5.9 billion in end-user spend, according to a new IDC study. Consumer demand for digital imaging has once again brought healthy revenues to the key players in the industry.

“As predicted, in 2003 we witnessed another phenomenal year for the industry - prices dropped even further and vendors repositioned their products to capture the next wave of digital enthusiasm,” said Paul Withington, senior research analyst for IDC’s European Peripherals Group. “This has translated into a mass-market adoption particularly within the 3 megapixel [MP] segment, which became the area where vendors found their greatest success.”

Percentage growth into 2004 will not prove as dramatic as in previous years, as the market moves beyond its adoption stage. Across Western Europe, IDC predicts 45% overall growth in 2004 and towards the end of IDC’s five-year forecast period to 2008 we can expect the market to have matured and the vendor landscape to be carrying significant battle scars through jousts with the camera phone.

Digital Secrets Reviews Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom

Olympus C-8080 Wide ZoomDigital Secrets have just reviewed the 8-megapixel Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom digital camera.

“Somewhere along the line—perhaps several places along the line—choices were made and compromises were accepted. Sadly, the image that the 8080 delivers is a full step lower in quality than the one delivered by the Sony 828. Not quite as much detail, laid back tonality, less vivid color tracking into shadows and apparently less overall dynamic range come out of this camera, even at its most optimum f-stops in a head to head comparison.”

PCWorld's Top 10 Advanced Digital Cameras

PCWorld have just published a comparitive roundup of what they consider to be the top-10 advanced digital cameras. There are a few strange choices in the list…

“The 8-megapixel race is on: Canon, Nikon, and Olympus join Sony in offering high-end consumer models with 8-megapixel CCDs. So far the Olympus C-8080 is our pick of the group (we’ve yet to test the Canon PowerShot Pro1), with top-notch image-quality scores and easy-to-use controls. Nikon’s Coolpix 8700 produced photos as fine as the C-8080’s and has a longer zoom range, but it’s harder to use. In the “If you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it” category, Leica’s classic-looking Digilux 2 is designed for the purist photographer. Its unique feature: a built-in bounce flash.”

DPReview Reviews Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom

Olympus C-8080 Wide ZoomDPReview have just reviewed the new 8-megapixel Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom digital camera.

“My first impression of the C-8080 Wide Zoom was, “at last a prosumer camera that feels as though it is worth its price tag”. The C-8080 is built to a higher standard than any of the other eight megapixel digital cameras (save maybe the Sony DSC-F828), with a thick, high grade metal body simple rubber coating and innovative yet unfussy control layout. This is a camera which feels as well put together as a much more expensive digital SLR, you just know it’s going to last. Olympus also broke the mold with the C-8080’s design and although initially the camera controls may seem complex it all falls into place and changing settings (almost any setting, they’re all there) become fast and logical.”

Luminous Landscape Reviews Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom

Olympus C-8080 Wide ZoomLuminous Landscape is the first website that I know of to review the new 8-megapixel Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom digital camera. Unfortunately it doesn’t impress Michael Reichmann…

“Like the Sony F828 the Olympus C-8080 is able to shoot in RAW mode. But as with the Sony this mode is almost unusable because the camera takes forever (actually about 20 seconds ? a bit slower than the Sony) to write a RAW file to disk. During this time the camera is unusable. Sorry Olympus and Sony ? that’s not the way I do photography. Shooting Degeurotypes is faster. Spend a few more dollars and put in a bit more buffer memory and also a microprocessor that’s able to walk and chew gum at the same time. Totally frustrating!”
